Chapter 420: Chapter 420: There Are Many as Strong as Me_1

What could be more terrifying than experiencing a car accident after getting lost in the fog?

It was retaining consciousness after the car accident and being able to clearly hear the approaching sound of the monsters.

Emily felt that their current predicament could seamlessly connect to any horror film—the unlucky them had become the protagonists of a horror movie, sent to this hellish place by the company.

She also wanted to criticize these monsters for not having a sense of chivalry, because according to the general flow of horror films, they at least should have waited until they had settled down in the small town before successive horrifying events unfolded.

Her brain was filled with wild thoughts, followed by her surprising realization that aside from the driver who had scraped his arm, everyone was unharmed. Without saying a word, they collectively used the skill of playing dead, seemingly hoping to bluff their way past these creatures, which bore no resemblance to bears.

From the corner of her eye, she could already see the outline of the monsters.

At that moment, Emily mustered what might have been the only courage she’d ever had in her life and was the first to push open the car door, yelling, "Playing dead is useless, run!"

This warning woke the three hesitant people, who instinctively followed Emily’s lead. With their minds a blank, they desperately tried to keep up with her pace. Then, the sound of the monsters’ pursuit came from behind, as they wielded scythes and chased after them menacingly.

It seemed their bravery had paid off when they quickly discovered an astonishing fact—although these monsters looked incredibly swift, their actual speed of movement was even slower than the slowest of them, and it seemed they also lacked stamina. Seeing some of them faltering, the marauders also slowed down, gasping for breath!

Could it be...

These Void creatures actually weren’t good at running?

However, they had no time to stop and conduct a detailed study of these monsters. They could only continue to follow Emily, sprinting forward as if their lives depended on it.

No one knew where this road led, nor did they know what further into the fog awaited them.

But they truly regretted not having spent the money to have enhanced tendon prosthetics implanted.

These might have been the most troublesome monsters they had ever encountered.

Despite seemingly being slow and not particularly strong, they persisted relentlessly in their pursuit, not giving the four runners any chance to stop and rest.

This chase had lasted nearly a quarter of an hour, and when they finally managed to shake off the monsters, these corporate office workers simply collapsed to the ground. Emily, who had barely managed to stay upright, was also bent over, struggling to catch her breath.

It was thanks to her past experience as a marathon volunteer that she managed to escape the monsters’ chase.

Were they saved?

After catching her breath for a moment, Emily looked ahead. Whether it was an illusion or not, the silhouette of the small town appeared to flicker in and out within the depths of the fog.

She had no way of knowing whether there were other monsters in the town, but it was much better than this open highway.

At least the company had told them that the town was relatively safe for them.

"Quick, muster your strength, we’re almost at the town!"

Emily shouted to the others with renewed vigor; in this terrifying environment, she was willing to cling to any sliver of hope.

Seeing the sight of hope, the few struggling to their feet on the road got up. However, they weren’t the only ones inspired by Emily’s call; from deep within the fog, more things began to emerge from the ground.

Five, ten...

Soon, they lost count. Countless monsters surrounded them in the middle, turning the last stretch to the town into an insurmountable barrier, and even their way back was thoroughly blocked by the monsters. Their last shred of hope was completely drowned by despair, and the three looked helplessly at Emily.

This time, Emily opened her mouth wanting to say some encouraging words, but she quickly realized her mouth was trembling so much that she couldn’t utter a complete sentence.

After brewing for a long time, she finally said, "Everyone, it’s nice to meet you all."

"Don’t give up hope!"

The response to Emily did not come from the three of them, but from a strange voice. The monsters surrounding them turned toward the source of the sound, and through the gaps, they glimpsed a figure that seemed to be both present and absent.

The sudden arrival of the mysterious person was just like a storyline NPC in games and movies that saves players from peril!

"Save, save us!"

Emily screamed at the top of her lungs, hoping her cries for help would penetrate the encirclement of monsters and reach the other’s ears.

Before her eyes, she seemed to visualize the stranger cutting a bloody path through the monsters’ encirclement, leading them to escape into the small town. However, the change that happened next made her eyes widen in disbelief.

The people in the encirclement clearly felt the ground shake beneath them like an earthquake. A fissure split the entire road in two, with some monsters being flung away and others plummeting into the endless abyss below.

A gust of wind bore down like a blade, slicing the monsters into pieces, and Emily could actually see human emotions on them.

Under the pressure of fear, the surviving monsters fled back underground.

The fissure continued and soon vanished from their sight, its momentum seeming as if it would split the city in half.

This...

This was not a scene from a horror movie, but rather one you would see in a big-budget science fiction film!

In a short while, the terrifying being that had just used a single glance to cleave the earth and incidentally slaughter dozens of monsters entered their field of vision. The person was clad in a bulky hazmat suit, wearing a gas mask that covered their entire face—Emily suspected that the being might not even be human.

Whether it was an illusion or not, Emily had the feeling that the person was angry.

Indeed, at this moment, Song Lan was seething with anger.

He had indeed held a brief meeting that morning with "The Hunter" ambushed at the town’s entrance, instructing it to coordinate with his movements when the company’s investigation team arrived, but these "Hunters" had completely misunderstood his intentions!

His plan was to rush into the midst of the monsters in the chaos and, amidst the turmoil, drag the investigation team to safety into the town, letting these new friends feel the terror of the Void on their first day in town.

But "The Hunter" not only dug such a long trench in the road behind his back, but they even started to learn the art of playing dead on the spot, taking advantage of their powerful regenerative abilities to let their bodies come apart, making it look like he had killed dozens of monsters with just a glance.

How dare they destroy the road surface once again. Thinking of Lu Xiang’s expression when he found out they had turned the road in front of the town into something resembling a great rift valley, Song Lan shuddered.

The terror had not disappeared.

It had merely shifted from the members of the company’s investigation team to him.

"I..."

"I know, you must be the most powerful combatant in the Void Investigation Bureau!"

Emerging from her shock, an overjoyed Emily blurted out. If only they could cling to this person’s coattails, perhaps they really could survive in this perilous town!

"No, you’ve misunderstood,"

Song Lan ground his teeth. Were it not for the presence of Emily and the others, he would have grabbed the group of "Hunters" and sent them off to be laborers for road repair!

But for now, he only had to do his best to calm his feelings and said, "I’m just an ordinary clerical worker; there are plenty stronger than me in the bureau."
