Chapter 419: Chapter 419: Good Person Emily_1

When Emily boarded the car to the small town, her heart was filled with despair.

She had thought that after years of application, she had finally passed the review to become a one-star rescuer and was about to face a major turning point in her life, but her first assignment was to go to District 17, joining this life-risking task.

Before departing, the company gathered all the investigators participating in this inquiry for a meeting not only to boost their morale but primarily to tell them in detail that if they were to unfortunately sacrifice their lives during the mission, the company would provide their families with generous compensation.

Beyond a sum of money sufficient for the latter half of their lives, her parents would also enjoy the medical benefits of company employees and could visit the prosthetics hospital owned by the company for two comprehensive medical check-ups each year free of charge.

In order to commemorate their brave conduct, the company also took photos and short videos of them in a virtual scene before they set off. These well-produced electronic memorabilia would be sent to their homes at the first opportunity.

Wasn’t this simply telling them, before they even left, that the company had never intended to let them return alive!

Emily remembered the heavy-hearted feeling she had when she walked out of the company that evening. She immediately called home and vented about how the company treated them as cannon fodder.

However, before she could tell her father, "Maybe I shouldn’t become a rescuer after all," she heard words of encouragement from the other end of the line, "Just go with peace of mind, we can take good care of ourselves."

Was it an illusion, or did she feel that her father’s attitude suddenly changed, becoming somewhat... pleased and expectant, upon hearing that the company would provide a substantial sum of money?

He did not explicitly express his feelings over the call but suddenly changed the topic and asked in detail about the amount of compensation and how it would be deposited into their account.

Emily’s heart turned ice-cold.

In a fit of pique, she recklessly agreed to the company’s demands, since all you care about is money anyway and couldn’t care less about me!

I might as well be dead!

"Emily, Emily!"

The urgent voice of a company employee pulled her back to reality. She remembered this man with a despondent face, who, when he first arrived at the company, was being reprimanded by his supervisor for poor performance, and his colleagues never called him by his name but used "trash" instead.

She had witnessed workplace bullying, and this bullied company employee was then called into the office—although his performance evaluations were frequently unsatisfactory, the company full of human care still found a way out for him.

To complete a life-risking task, using the last of his life to contribute to the company.

She noticed that the gazes of the other three people in the car were all fixed on her, each face showing terror.

"Um... we think we just saw a monster by the roadside!"

Finally, the trash said tremulously, "Human-shaped, but with two pincers, a monster we’ve never seen before."

Even though it was just a fleeting glimpse, it was enough to cast a psychological shadow over these office workers. They conservatively estimated that the monster could chop off their heads as easily as slicing a watermelon.

I understand all that, but why are you all looking at me?

The pressure on Emily increased twofold, and her heart, which felt as dead as dead could be, suddenly became anxious again due to the rumors of a monster’s presence.

She suddenly didn’t want to die anymore.

Or rather, even if she had to die, she preferred to find a quiet place, lie in bed, and take lethal drugs to pass away more peacefully.

But such a meaningless death would not entail compensation.

The thought of being hacked to pieces by monsters, experiencing immense despair and pain before death, made her face turn as pale as the others in the car.

She quickly understood why these people were looking at her.

She was a one-star rescuer, nominally the combat force of this investigative squad.

But reality is often cruel; the investigators might not know that, apart from being selected through a standard "three abilities" assessment for potential combat personnel, there’s another way to become a rescuer—by doing good deeds.

In fact, she earned her status by volunteering, engaging in community outreach activities, and after campaigning for seven years with the support of some local residents, she finally passed the one-star rescuer review on her thirteenth try!

So if they really were attacked by monsters, she wouldn’t be able to fight like a proper rescuer; the only thing she could do was act as human bait, buying time for the other investigators to escape.

Just as Emily was trying to convince herself to be ready for sacrifice, another scream distracted everyone.

The scream came from the driver, and this time, even Emily saw the monsters described by the company employees—not just one, but a swarm!

They resembled a fusion of human and some type of insect, with human silhouettes but faces that looked like grotesquely enlarged insects. At the sound of the vehicle, the monsters’ gaze simultaneously centered on them.

At that moment, the driver did something as foolish as those in horror movies—in his panic, trying to avoid the monsters on the road, he jerked the steering wheel all the way, and even though he stomped on the brakes, the car crashed into a tree after skidding some distance.

With a loud "bang," everyone’s vision went momentarily blank.

Meanwhile, far away in the core district, a company employee slammed his palm down on the table in frustration, as holographic projections and electronic screens in front of him recorded the crash scene.

This was the company’s new technology.

The investigators sent to the small town were essentially human probes for the company, which could receive everything they saw through the features installed in their prosthetic eyes, and these human-shaped probes had two advantages: they were cheap and readily available, and they could still complete their tasks through human cognition, even if they encountered interference or hacker attacks.

Yet no one expected that this team of human probes would have a car accident before even catching sight of the town; their only contribution to the company was detecting a new type of Void creature, a fusion between humans and insects.

But what infuriated the observer was not the company’s loss; it was that the car accident cost him two hundred watts.

Just now, the observers had set up a betting game with rich stakes, wagering on the survival time of each of the four individuals, from as little as zero days to as much as a month, but almost everyone bet that the four wouldn’t last three days.

They had no idea about the feelings of those in the car at this moment, but for them, this was a rare death race.

This technology allowed not only the visualization of the investigators’ sight but also the preservation of their despair when encountering monsters, which was far more exciting than tedious and dull work.

"Betting is closed, betting is closed!"

The surveillance room was filled with a jovial atmosphere. As opposed to his annoyance, those who had bet on zero days rejoiced in the misfortune; the fate of these four was already sealed.

Even if they didn’t die in the car crash, the monsters drawn by the noise would tear them to pieces.

"No rush, let’s wait until they’re really dead!"

The observer gritted his teeth with resentment. If he was going to lose two hundred watts, it would be worth it to witness the moment the investigators were shredded by monsters.

It’d be like he spent two hundred watts to watch a live-action death recording.
