Chapter 421: Chapter 421: Hometown, Hometown!_1

This person is talking nonsense.

Not just Emily and the others who witnessed the scene just now, but the observers who saw it with their own eyes had the same thought.

Ordinary clerical staff, in the absence of enhanced tendons like theirs, would find it difficult to run even a few kilometers, let alone have seen a clerical worker whose mere gaze could crack the ground.

This was as insincere as those top students who arrive in class first thing in the morning, review at the front while claiming they hadn’t reviewed at all.

However, they soon thought of the "Enthusiastic Citizen" who had once caused a sensation throughout the core area. His name had reached them, making families and large corporations feel insecure. Recent rumors suggested that he had disappeared while investigating the Void and was suspected to have been killed, which made his identity an unresolved mystery.

No one knew where he came from or how he acquired such tremendous power.

Today, however, there seemed to be some clue to this question—they saw through the eyes of an investigator, a man almost as powerful as him, who claimed to be a clerical worker of the Void Investigation Bureau, and there were even stronger individuals there.

If he was not lying, it was very likely that the Void was the true homeland of the "Enthusiastic Citizen."

The protective suits and gas masks that obscured their faces reminded them of rumors that the "Enthusiastic Citizen" always wore a masquerade mask. If they dared to go further, perhaps the "Enthusiastic Citizen" or the entire staff of the Void Investigation Bureau were not human, but some sort of humanoid aberration from the Void, which could explain why they all possessed such formidable power.

This was definitely an extremely important discovery.

They immediately got to work and decided to compile all their findings into a written report to be submitted first thing tomorrow morning.

For this reason, they had to keep a close eye on the investigators’ experiences tonight to gather more information.

However, the other end of the holographic projection had left the tense atmosphere, as the four followed the unknown Adventurer into the small town and encountered three other volunteers who had signed up to settle in the town at the inn.

The three hospitable individuals finally freed them from the panic of being chased by monsters, as people from different social strata, who would not normally meet, were now sitting together in harmony.

But soon, the observers working overtime at the company realized the horror had never ended—it had just arrived silently in reality through the holographic projection.

Since Emily and the others entered the town, bizarre and eerie incidents began to happen continuously in the company.

First, there was a strong source of interference.

They saw the screens flicker to snow because of the signal interference several times, and the sudden screeching noises startled the observers each time they occurred, lasting several seconds.

But they quickly analyzed the cause from a rational, scientific perspective.

It must have been the unexplainable fog in the town that was affecting data transmission, as all the scenes they saw were uploaded through the built-in programs in the investigators’ cybernetic eyes. If they were in a region where signals were confused, electronics could easily be disrupted.

But this scientific reassurance did not last long.

As the three volunteers escorted the newcomers back to their rooms, the sights along the way chilled the observers to the bone—the hotel appeared normal on the first floor, but as they went up to the second, spotty blood handprints suddenly appeared on the walls, accompanied by warnings written in blood, such as "run away" and "everyone is dead."

Those on the other end, such as Emily, seemed completely unaware of the anomalies and continued to laugh and chat as they walked up to the third floor with the three people.

The volunteers enthusiastically introduced the third floor as their stronghold, not only stocked with ample supplies but also very safe. In the days they had been living there, no creatures from the Void had ever reached the third level.

If one only listened to their description, the third floor of the hotel should be a warm dwelling place, but the electronic screen showed a completely different scene.

This time, blood had covered the walls on both sides of the corridor, trickling down to the floor, staining the entire corridor blood-red. They also saw the walls seemed to grow what appeared to be highly decayed eyes. When people passed by, these eyes would suddenly open and stare penetratingly at the passersby.

Then, a horrific change occurred in the three hospitable volunteers.

They clearly saw how Spicy Chicken, leading the way, suddenly twisted his head around 180 degrees. His face was so pale that there was no blood to be seen. The eyeballs in his sockets had disappeared, and he convulsed quickly. Emily’s cybernetic eyes captured this detail, but when they tried to take a snapshot of the twisted face, Spicy Chicken returned to normal, continuing his passionate explanations as if everything that had just happened was a hallucination.

This scene made everyone’s skin crawl.

This almost caused them to simultaneously recall the warning from the second floor.

"Everyone is dead."

Were those three volunteers who had explained things to the group really human?

Or had they actually died upon arriving at the town, their bodies taken over by some unknown entities from the Void?

Keep calm!

Fortunately, tonight was not a night of working overtime alone.

The observers comforted each other and even cracked some not-so-funny jokes, but to dispel the fear in their hearts, many began to laugh.

After all, theoretically, the more terrifying the experiences that Emily and the others were about to face, the more likely it was that they would collect useful information.

Laughter once again filled the observation room, acting like a weapon against the invisible fear.

Some among them laughed very loudly, so much that their voices were hoarse from the effort, and the laughter was sharp and piercing, sounding like a woman’s voice, which caused nearly everyone to immediately turn their gaze toward the only female colleague in the observation room, only to find that she hadn’t joined the awkward laughter and was instead beginning to draft the observation report for the day.

This discovery sent chills down their spines, and they almost instantly stopped laughing, as did the particularly piercing laughter.

Silence once again gained the upper hand, and this time, no one dared to crack any jokes. Instead, someone swore out of anger, "Stop playing these scary pranks, are you sick or what?"

Suddenly there were many responders.

This seemed to answer the source of the piercing laughter—it must have been someone’s practical joke, deliberately playing a piece of frightening audio, which was nothing strange in terms of technical means.

But immediately after, another cry of alarm rang out.

They looked in the direction of the sound, only to see the observer responsible for watching Emily suddenly leap out of his chair and, tumbling and scrambling, fell to the ground.

"Are you out of your mind?"

Far from receiving any sympathy for his plight, the observation room erupted with a barrage of curses.

The observer who had fallen to the ground opened his mouth wide but seemed to have been robbed of his voice. He pointed at the electronic screen. After a few braver observers exchanged glances, they gathered around.

As expected, the room Emily had chosen maintained the style of a haunted house, and the ordeals of the entire day had left her both physically and mentally exhausted, so after settling her luggage, she lay down on the bed of the inn.

But this time, in addition to the mentally contaminating room environment, they saw something else.

On the right side of the bed, there sat a disheveled woman in white.

The corner of Emily’s artificial eye could just catch sight of the woman in white’s face. Her hair was dry like straw left in the wind, and her blood-red eyeballs flickered through the fringe gaps. This close encounter brought by the artificial eye made them feel as though the woman was staring at them through the screen, directly into the observation room.

It was at that moment that interference appeared again, much more intense than before.

The screen was overtaken by static for more than ten seconds, and when the image was restored once again, the woman in white was finally gone.

Emily, oblivious to all this, stretched out and looked outside the window hesitating for a short moment.

After a brief pause, she finally summoned her courage.

She turned over and switched off the lamp in the room.
