Chapter 411: "The Rat" Once Battled Here_1
Chapter 411: Chapter 411: "The Rat" Once Battled Here_1
"The ’mouse’ is a lucky charm."
Even Song Lan, who had always believed in science, found himself entertaining a superstitious thought after returning to the inn.
He never imagined that this case, which had nothing to do with the "mouse," could take a new turn because of a sentence the other party said during a plea for leniency with Lu Xiang.
He quickly learned that the "mouse" had been living on the third floor—right in one of the rooms they had chosen.
Ophir said that she was only responsible for bringing the "mouse" here and that an informant from the Esinvig Army would meet him here. The only problem now was that both the informant and the "mouse" had vanished without a trace, making them very difficult to find in a short period.
And when he and Fengling broke into this place where the "mouse" had once fought, something unexpected happened.
As per Big Radish Head’s description, Spicy Chicken, who should have been deeply asleep on the bed, was nowhere to be found. They searched the room and eventually discovered him hiding underneath the bed.
What was even stranger was that after hiding under the bed, he fell asleep again, and it was such a deep sleep that no amount of pulling or pushing from Big Radish Head could wake him up.
This was almost identical to the symptoms of the mayor of Sheep Village, but he had not left the room to escape to the downtown area; instead, he hid under the bed.
"We’re doomed."
After their futile efforts, Big Radish Head collapsed dispiritedly onto the floor.
First, it was the mayor of Sheep Village, and now Spicy Chicken. If this kept up, they were all going to end up dying in this town because of sleepwalking.
The joy of making money had long vanished without a trace. Even if they could earn more money, one had to be alive to spend it.
"Please rest assured, we will ensure your safety as much as possible."
Song Lan comforted him.
He was serious. He consulted Lu Xiang partly out of interest in the town’s long-standing mysteries of disappearance and partly to create a good living environment for the town’s residents. These people were important builders for the town, yet here they were, scared half to death by these bizarre phenomena before construction even began.
How was anyone supposed to build a town like this?
The Bug Swarm was angry, and the consequences would be severe.
Unlike those who unintentionally offended and couldn’t avoid fast enough, the Bug Swarm always had one principle—deliberate offense, come and fight if you dare.
Just come out and let’s see if the Devourer will bite you, and that’s that.
"We are cursed, we’re all going to die here eventually!"
Big Radish Head sounded as if he hadn’t heard a thing, and even the mayor of Sheep Village had a grave expression on his face.
He did have many plans for building the town and making a profit by selling Void goods, but all his plans were predicated on not dying here.
Song Lan had no choice but to ask Fengling to take the two men and the sleeping Spicy Chicken to the room next door.
Without Big Radish Head around to spread negative energy, he could finally focus on investigating this room, which seemed no different from the next.
After a half-hour of searching, he finally found a secret compartment behind a strange outlet near the bedside. Hidden in the compartment was a bizarre architectural blueprint that resembled the inn but included many parts that seemed non-existent.
The blueprint had extremely detailed notes marked on it, notes that seemed familiar. Apart from the blueprint, Song Lan also found a sticky note that had grown moldy.
Lu Xiang had mentioned Captain Kate’s habit of handwriting clues. She never trusted the network, believing hackers from the company would tamper with it, leading her to incorrect conclusions. This habit had almost accompanied Kate the Law Enforcer throughout her career, until she disappeared after coming to this inn, still scribbling investigative clues on a sticky note.
Perhaps even Kate herself could not have imagined that the words she wrote on that sticky note would, years later, provide enlightenment to another person who came to this room.
After cleaning off the mold, Song Lan read the contents of the sticky note carefully.
The sticky note mentioned the reason Captain Kate came to the small town to investigate. Over the years, she had been secretly investigating a large-scale case of population disappearance in District 17. Not long ago, a mysterious letter provided her with a clue, which she followed all the way to this town, far from the city center.
Over the past few decades, the residents of the town had become accustomed to disappearances. Bizarre tales had become a part of their lives. At first, they would search for the missing people, but as time went on, everyone became numb to it, to the point where even missing person notices became too much effort to post. They simply recorded the names of the missing in a local registry and left it at that.
The floor plan of the inn was also prepared in advance by that mysterious person.
Kate wrote on the sticky note that she believed this mysterious person knew everything that was happening in this town and seemed to only hope to use her to reveal the truth.
The contents of the sticky note overturned the mainstream speculation of the department. In fact, Captain Kate had not been attacked and had her body disposed of when she entered the room. Using the secret passage provided by the floor plan, she lived in the inn for a week, avoiding the townspeople and the inn’s surveillance for unknown reasons.
Seven days later, Kate discovered a mysterious organization called "Dream Thief". She believed she had finally found their lair.
The record ended here, with no further content.
Song Lan speculated that Captain Kate had most likely been discovered by the "Dream Thief" while investigating their lair alone and met with an unfortunate end.
He immediately thought of the strange dreams mentioned by the mayor of Sheep Village. He and those who disappeared had left the town guided by those dreams. When these incidents occurred, they were all in their sleep, and now, Spicy Chicken was showing the same symptoms.
The secret passage on the floor plan explained how he left the inn under his and Fengling’s watchful eyes.
Could it be...
The people from that organization were actually still alive, constantly using the inn’s secret passages to move around?
From the affairs with Ophir and "the Rat", it wasn’t difficult to infer that the Dream Thief was very likely connected with the "outside" Rebel Army. Perhaps they had sent "the Rat" here because the Dream Thief could offer him help before the United Government could get to him.
The only thing that puzzled Song Lan was that judging by "the Rat"’s subsequent actions, he seemed unable to make contact with the organization after checking in, which eventually led to his re-arrest by Lu Xiang like a headless fly.
He immediately shared his investigative notes with Lu Xiang, who decided to see if they could contact the Esinvig Army officials through Princess Lieyang to get more clues about the Dream Thief.
After completing all this, Song Lan sat down on the bed.
Kate mentioned the mysterious person on the sticky note more than once. She speculated that this person might not be alone but a part of a powerful organization with knowledge of many secrets, yet for some reason, they could not reveal the truth themselves.
After learning about the existence of the mysterious person, some thoughts abruptly came back to her.
In fact, the gang members of District 17 had plotted to assassinate her more than once. But every time, due to some unexpected "coincidences", their plans failed, and she miraculously survived.
She had thought it was luck, but it seemed that was not the case.
Thus, on one of the sticky notes, she left the deep doubts that lingered in her heart.
She had always firmly believed that she was fulfilling her role as a Law Enforcer, fighting for justice.
But what if the justice she so firmly believed in was just the result of an unseen hand manipulating events from behind the scenes?
However, this time, the mysterious person was unable to save her as they had in the past, and the questions she left on the sticky note became an eternal mystery.
Somehow, Song Lan thought of Lu Xiang.
Looking at Kate’s past deeds, she and Lu Xiang were almost the same type of person.
Because of their dedication to duty, they were thorns in the side of the Foster Family and various corporations.
What was even more frightening upon reflection was that not long after Captain Kate’s disappearance, Lu Xiang was transferred to District 17 by the United Government, and she eventually challenged the Foster Family’s absolute authority in District 17 in a more radical way.
Could all this really be a coincidence?
