Chapter 412: Chapter 412: Dialogue from Time and Space_1
In Song Lan’s conception, Dream Thieves were an evil organization that manipulated others through dreams to achieve its own goals. However, Lu Xiang’s investigation result once again exceeded his expectations.
According to a certain officer of the Esinvig Army, the existence of Dream Thieves has a long history, dating back to the early days of the establishment of the United Government. They were likely one of the first groups to awaken a sense of rebellion within the territory of the United Government. The purpose of the Dream Thieves was to help those pitiful individuals forcibly gathered by the United Government for Spiritual Energy development experiments escape from those horrific laboratories.
To aid these innocent civilians, they would often deliberately infiltrate experimental institutions, covertly creating a passageway for people to flee the facilities.
The existence of this organization was tied to the early, savage growth of the United Government’s Psychic institutions.
After the concept of Spiritual Energy was first discovered, the United Government territory once set off a wave of fervor for psychic abilities. Those large corporations that promoted Psychic abilities development would deceive and abduct people with a natural talent for Spiritual Energy from various places, subjecting them to "stimulating treatments."
The so-called stimulating treatments involved inhumane methods of oppressing and tormenting the spirit of the subjects, keeping them constantly on the brink of collapse. This treatment was still universally regarded as the most efficient method for an ordinary person to rapidly transform into a Psychic, but due to its severe side effects and the violation of humanitarianism, it was comprehensively banned more than a decade ago.
The Dream Thieves were the product of that brutal industrial environment of the past decade.
When Lu Xiang followed the leads provided by Princess Lieyang, he realized that the hotel they were staying at might have been an experimental facility used for Psychic development decades ago. The secret passages mentioned in the floor plans were remnants of that time. After these experiments were banned, someone bought the abandoned building, converting it into the hotel they were staying at today.
Unexpectedly, the officer of the Esinvig Army also highlighted that the Dream Thieves were eliminated by the United Government decades ago.
To deal with these resisters who had always opposed them, the large companies once launched a grand "Witch Hunt Movement." Although the Dream Thieves across the regions fought desperately, they were ultimately annihilated by the Six Stars rescuers of the time.
The result of the movement was that almost all of the upper echelon of the Dream Thieves were captured and publicly executed in the face of the world.
Although Lu Xiang adopted a narrative tone in the information to elucidate the history as concisely and clearly as possible, Song Lan, sitting alone in his hotel room, still felt uneasy. Whether it was an illusion or not, he felt that his surroundings had become much colder.
Of course, he couldn’t find any Dream Thieves in the small town, because this organization had been wiped out by the United Government before he and Lu Xiang were born.
The intense public execution from that time can still be searched for on the internet today.
Seemingly aware of Song Lan’s heavy mood at the moment, Lu Xiang shared something interesting at the end.
The Rebel Army had explained their reasoning for arranging to put the "rat" into the hotel.
They were not hoping that a group that had been eliminated decades ago would come to the "rat"’s aid, but believed in the "rat"’s intelligence and his extensive experience in fighting against the United Government, confident that he would discover the legacy left by his predecessors and turn misfortune into a blessing.
Who knew that the "rat" had no wit at all; after staying a night in the hotel, he completely overlooked the significance of this hotel to the Rebel Army. When trouble arose, he even planned to hide in the crowd and blunder through, only to be arrested on the spot by the Law Enforcers.
Regarding this, Aishi, who had "watched the ’rat’ grow up," expressed her disappointment in the "rat."
Lu Xiang frankly said the "rat" was simply not cut out for it.
If Song Lan had been the one arranged to stay in this place as a member of the Rebel Army, perhaps he would have already found the hotel’s hidden secrets.
After dispatching the heaviness in his heart, Song Lan decided to continue focusing on the topic of "Walk Close to Science."
The strange dreams of the village chief of Sheep Village seemed to have been explained.
They had dreamed of an old inn from decades ago, before it was renovated, where citizens forced to undergo Psychic development experiments were locked behind iron doors along the corridor, descending into madness amid inhuman torture.
And that "run fast" might well have been the Dream Thief urging them to escape quickly.
For some unknown reason, there was a displacement in time and space that made him and those previous sleepwalkers who fell off the cliff hear whispers from the past.
What were originally whispers meant to help those sufferers had, due to the time-space misalignment, instead become the lethal weapon that killed those who fell from the cliff.
This did not seem the act of a rational, normal person, but more like forcing those affected to repeat some mechanized behavior.
Suddenly, Song Lan thought of something and dashed into the next room with one quick step.
Spicy Chicken woke up, the original three people discussing whether to apply to leave were startled by Song Lan’s sudden entry, their speech turning somewhat incoherent, "You, what do you want to do?"
"When you were helping him tidy his clothes yesterday, did you find any suspicious items?"
Upon being asked by Song Lan, Spicy Chicken was first taken aback, then quickly pulled out a piece of jewelry that looked very much like a brooch from his pocket, "I found this in the village chief’s pocket, I was actually going to wait for him to wake up and ask what this was for, but then I got distracted and forgot."
Song Lan took the brooch and examined it closely, soon discovering a secret compartment in it, and took out an old-style chip in front of the three people.
In the concealed slot of the brooch, there was also a string of code resembling a serial number.
This was a der’s brooch.
Seeing the code, Song Lan was both annoyed and amused, he vaguely guessed the purpose of this object, it was likely the tags used to distinguish the identities of those experimented upon after they were locked up in the institution.
These two people had tucked the victims’ identity tags into their pockets like treasures, which is why they were affected after they had fallen asleep.
The reason he thought of this was that he had always found the sleepwalking behavior of the village chief of Sheep Village and Spicy Chicken to be very strange; from the first day they arrived in the town they had always acted together, except for sleeping at night. If they were truly cursed somewhere, all three should have sleepwalked together towards the outside of town, why would they fall ill separately?
The appearance of this "brooch" resolved the doubts in his heart.
"Where did you find this thing?"
"It was, it was in the hotel."
The village chief of Sheep Village recognized the "brooch" at a glance and felt a surge of fear, "This thing is cursed?"
"What curse, you should believe in science!"
With that, Song Lan said, "Lead the way, I’ll show you Walk Close to Science today."
