Chapter 410: Chapter 410: Some Casual Remarks_1
Soon, the case of Captain Kate’s disappearance was sent to Song Lan’s phone. This case had once caused a huge stir in the Law Enforcers department, with three separate dispatches to the small town, a house-to-house search was conducted, but all efforts returned fruitless in the end.
The only gain was the discovery of Captain Kate’s car in the small town.
Some town residents witnessed Captain Kate enter this inn and never reappeared afterward, yet despite the Law Enforcers pulling all surveillance footage and turning the inn upside down, they had to accept the fact that Captain Kate had vanished into thin air.
Later, the former supervisor issued an order to squash the matter, forbidding anyone from leaving their post to investigate the case in the town.
The disappearance of Kate had become an unresolved case, and in the blink of an eye, several years had passed.
Over those years, the ranks of the Law Enforcers department saw many replacements, with some dying in gang conflicts, others growing tired of the department’s culture and leaving, and as for the former supervisor, rumors said he had made enough money from the Foster family to squander for the rest of his life, so he pulled strings to relocate to the core area to live.
"One month after I took office, Captain Doug mentioned this case to me, he had privately held on to all files concerning the disappearance; what I sent to you are the contents he salvaged from the former supervisor," she said.
Lu Xiang leaned back in her office chair, telling Song Lan everything she knew as detailed as possible.
She was quite pleased.
A salted fish like Song Lan actually showed interest in a case for once.
"They used to be in a relationship, and Doug has been investigating privately ever since the former supervisor shut the case down," she admitted.
He suspected that Kate had probably been killed in the small town, but at the very least, he hoped to return her remains to the department.
Lu Xiang was relieved, yet she couldn’t help but rue the fact that he had chosen the most baffling and frightening unsolved case in the department, a case that had caused the Law Enforcers to refrain from speculating what exactly had happened to Kate after she reached the town.
"You must have heard about her style of conduct, so during her work, she offended many people. Aside from criminals threatening to get rid of her every now and then, there were the former supervisor, the Foster family, and some companies implicated by her thorough investigations who all wished her dead," she explained.
In fact, many in the department, including Doug himself, had told Kate on numerous occasions to turn a blind eye sometimes, but Kate always ignored her friends’ advice as if it were wind passing by.
Her disappearance was expected by many, but unlike those Law Enforcers who died in accidents, of unknown diseases, or in gang shootouts, her case was filled with bizarre and terrifying elements.
"The most prevalent theory at the time was that Captain Kate was attacked as soon as she entered her room, and the killer then disposed of her body without a trace. Doug investigated almost every criminal who had past grievances with Kate over the years but still couldn’t find any useful information. He was willing but powerless against the Foster family and the companies involved," she continued.
Lu Xiang remembered something else and added, "Another suspicious point is the attitude of the former supervisor. Initially, he didn’t stop others from investigating and even set up a special team to conduct multiple probes in the town. Then one day, he suddenly reversed his stance and banned all investigation into the case."
This abnormal change could be explained in one sentence:
Someone above had spoken.
A family or a company didn’t want them to continue digging into the case.
It’s just a shame that until the former supervisor left for another city to live, Doug never found out who had actually given the order.
Lu Xiang didn’t find out either.
There were no written records in the department, so she guessed someone must have approached the former supervisor privately.
After she arrived in District Seventeen, she had made several trips to the small town for this case and personally investigated the inn where Captain Kate disappeared, but because so much time had passed since the incident, even if there had been any clues left behind, they had long been washed away by time.
"By the way, the hotel where she disappeared is the one you’re staying in now."
"Boss, I’m a coward, please don’t scare me with ghost stories."
"If it were ghosts, that would actually be less frightening."
During the time they were on the phone, a real "ghost" had been right by Song Lan’s side.
She felt that Song Lan’s attitude towards ghosts and mutated creatures was often much kinder than his attitude towards people.
After saying goodbye to Lu Xiang, Song Lan hung up the phone, lay on the bed, and stared at the ceiling of the room, lost in thought. Lu Xiang had given too many details about the cases, and now his phone was filled with information about Captain Kate’s disappearance case, looking like an academic paper.
If he were to analyze each detail in it, it would be nothing more than retracing the steps others had taken, and they had already proved with their actions that this way of investigation would only lead to dead ends.
What made their investigation different from the previous ones was the extra clue provided by the chief of Sheep Village.
And now, the critical question was how exactly the village chief managed to leave the hotel under his and Fengling’s watchful eyes—perhaps the killer back then, or even Captain Kate herself, had vanished without a trace under the hotel surveillance in the same way.
He quickly speculated that there might be a secret passage in the hotel.
But the limitation of interference-type spiritual energy lied in its connection to consciousness: you can never discover what’s beyond your knowledge.
Many possibilities surged in Song Lan’s mind. He got out of bed and paced back and forth in the room. Unless he could connect these clues together, they might instead become obstructions in discovering the truth.
To keep himself alert, he opened the window of his room, letting the cool breeze from outside fill the space.
But at that moment, Song Lan suddenly froze.
He found the street outside the window strangely familiar, and to confirm his hunch, he climbed out of the window and crossed the street in front of the hotel, following the familiar feeling to the building below.
Not long ago, their department had come to this town to investigate a new type of internet scam, and the office building in front of him was where they found the scammer’s body. Due to the continuous fog in town, he hadn’t noticed this detail.
Latter, they confirmed that the one who killed the scammer was an agent from Military Intelligence Section Seven, and Ivan had returned to headquarters after his identity was exposed, which made them push the incident to the back of their minds.
However, standing in front of the office building, a familiar face inexplicably surfaced in Song Lan’s mind.
Their old friend, Mr. "Rat."
In the confession that he made to Lu Xiang, he mentioned that he happened to notice Ivan, who had come to kill the scammer because his place was directly opposite the crime scene.
Song Lan turned around to look... wasn’t the place directly across the crime scene the hotel they were staying in?
This was where Mr. "Rat" had fought his battles.
But this place wasn’t randomly chosen by "Rat;" it was arranged for him by the Rebel Army through connections they had with Ophir, claiming it was a place that would absolutely not be found by the Law Enforcers or the United Government.
So, here comes the question,
As the only hotel in town, why were Ophir and the Rebel Army so confident that the United Government would never find him?
