Chapter 266: Chapter 266: A Cordial and Friendly Visit_1
Some people died, but he was still alive.
Song Lan felt that this sentence was perfectly suited to describe the current situation. When Lu Xiang opened the helmet of the exoskeleton armor, a piercing scream came out, accompanied by the stench of decay that could be smelled even through the helmet of the exoskeleton armor.
Upon seeing the two of them, the member of Oleg’s Squad enclosed in the exoskeleton armor became extremely agitated. If it weren’t for the thick layer of armor separating them, he would probably have lunged at them to bite.
The skin on his face was almost completely ulcerated, exposing the subepidermal flesh. There was a hole in his left cheek, clearly revealing his teeth and gum tissue. His eyes were dull and lifeless, seemingly driven only by the instinct to feed. It was clear that after sending out the distress signal, this zombie guy had been trapped here, starving for days.
Fortunately, it seemed he had no brains left. After turning into a zombie, he couldn’t continue to use the exoskeleton armor and ended up trapping himself inside, unable to go anywhere.
It was hard to find a more standard zombie than this.
The kind that could go straight to the set of "Road of Survival" without makeup to be an extra.
His menacing posture seemed to startle Lu Xiang, causing the entire exoskeleton armor to shudder.
I never thought Director Lu would have a day when she was scared by zombies.
However, she quickly demonstrated her ability to adjust her emotions and a second later asked in a tone as calm as usual, "Is there any way to communicate with him?"
If these Infected were products of the Devourers, then maybe Song Lan could engage in simple dialogue with them.
"No, he has no Spiritual Energy, no will of his own, he just seems like a regular corpse... but perhaps our domesticated Devourer could find something out," he said, opening the external broadcasting system of the exoskeleton armor and shouting, "Little Devourer, come out for a moment, ask this local what happened."
Upon hearing Song Lan’s call, a Worm that was a meter long separated from the armored floating car. Its plump belly pressed against the sand dune as it crawled slowly over, leaving a long trail behind on the dune.
The Worm got in front of the Infected, and after exchanging hisses for a while, the Worm nodded humanly. It turned back and relayed the information it gathered, "It says ’you’re all big assholes’."
"What’s with the lack of manners in this zombie?"
Song Lan hadn’t expected that merely asking for directions would get them insulted by a local zombie. "Little Devourer, go make him come to his senses."
He looked at himself, then at Lu Xiang, and finally had to assign this task to the Devourer.
They were both wearing exoskeleton armor, and their fists were truly bigger than sandbags. Considering the fragile defense of a zombie, probably one punch would flatten the other’s head.
The commanded Worm suddenly leaped up with such force that it toppled the zombie to the ground along with the exoskeleton armor. Swiftly, two whip-like tentacles grew near its head, and it started lashing the zombie’s skull wildly.
The stuttering hisses between them became significantly more intense.
"All right, let’s see what he has to say now."
As the head of their zombie buddy was nearly deformed from the lashing, Song Lan called a halt.
The Worm turned its head, tentacles gesturing in the air, "It says it doesn’t know anything, and the others of its kind outside don’t seem very smart."
Truth be told, it was somewhat disappointed to see this zombie’s foolish demeanor and thought this was likely caused by these peers living in the wild without a competent role model to learn from.
"Then tell it, we are now going to check the coordinate records inside its exoskeleton armor, and it shouldn’t obstruct us."
Worms nodded again. Extending its tentacles, it coiled around the zombie’s shoulder and yanked him out of the exoskeleton armor, then slammed the zombie onto the sandy ground. After that, it fiercely glared at the zombie and warned, "If I catch you here again, I swear I’ll break your legs!"
This phrase was something it had learned from the security team leader "Heavy Cannon."
"Heavy Cannon" had been holding a hammer nearly as tall as him to drive away the hoodlums that loitered near the junkyard.
It proved to be effective, as the zombie thrown on the ground scampered away in fear, just like the hoodlums did back then.
Witnessing this scene, Song Lan contemplated, "Although their brains have atrophied, they seem to be able to make some simple judgments based on instinct."
For example, if the zombies encounter hoodlums who beat them up outside, they would flee in a panic.
Traditional zombies would blindly fling themselves toward their enemies once they left the exoskeleton armor, demonstrating their determination with actions that said, "You won’t leave here today unless you take me down."
"He was a medical staff member of Oleg’s team."
Lu Xiang quickly retrieved the zombie’s identity information from the recording device of the exoskeleton armor, "He discovered he was infected after an operation a week ago and, in a bid for survival, escaped while everyone else was resting at night, making his way here to send a distress signal to the external department."
This was good news, as it at least proved that Doctor Oleg and his team were very likely still alive, and had undertaken an operation somewhere just a few days prior.
"Found it, the coordinates show that the last location of their operation was in a small town to the northwest,"
In a state close to mental collapse, this member of the medical team did his best to record all the information he could think of through the exoskeleton armor.
In these recorded messages, she found some unusual details, "He mentioned in his memo that they didn’t lose contact with the external department, but rather Doctor Oleg unilaterally cut off their communication signals and ventured deep into the area where the infection originated."
At least from this member’s perspective, Doctor Oleg had gone mad.
Their original mission didn’t include venturing into enemy territory; they were supposed to retreat after confirming the presence of the infected, but Doctor Oleg had changed the mission on his own initiative.
Through these passages of text, Lu Xiang could sense the strong resentment this member held towards Doctor Oleg.
The member even suspected that Doctor Oleg might have been infected, just manifesting it in a different way.
"Besides that, he mentioned some other information."
Lu Xiang suddenly frowned, "This message was placed before all other records, and he emphasized in three lines that one absolutely must not go out at night in this area, or else they would become as mad as the locals."
Indeed, from the language of the records, one could see that the recorder exhibited two drastically different states.
Before fleeing the camp overnight, he seriously noted down the rules of survival and carefully preserved his daily research data, showing that before his escape, he was not dissatisfied with Doctor Oleg’s sudden change of mission. On the contrary, he actively engaged in the research.
Even when he encountered infection, he had calmly documented the changes happening in his body.
Until night fell.
All the negative emotions seemed to start after his nighttime escape.
"Oleg and his team are investigating something called ’Queen’s Nest.’"
