Chapter 267: Chapter 267: Medical Study Can’t Save the Infected_1
According to the backup records from the exoskeleton armor, they quickly figured out Oleg’s Squad’s modus operandi.
They would investigate during the day and return to camp to rest at night. Now was exactly when they would be out on a mission, and the warnings in the memo about "not going out at night" forced them to find Oleg’s team and ask about the situation before nightfall.
The turn of events was beyond their imagination.
Oleg’s Squad had chosen to actively sever communication, indicating they must have made some astounding discovery.
"Falena said Oleg and his medical team had been investigating the source of the infection for years, but in reality, they had never actually come into contact with the source itself and had not found a remedy for the Infected,"
Lu Xiang quickly understood why the medical team had cut off communication: because the only "prescription" the detached departments had for the Infected was to cleanse the land with tactical nuclear strikes, and after a mushroom cloud erupted, both the Infected and the source of infection would be effectively treated.
"Once they report the information here to the detached departments, they would, as usual, launch tactical nuclear strikes on the area, leaving no traces behind."
She did understand the methods of the detached departments.
For them, the use of tactical nuclear strikes was the simple solution; nobody was willing to venture into the region where the source of infection was located, risking infection to uncover the truth.
But after all, Oleg was leading a medical squad. Even though they were equipped with exoskeleton armors, their firepower was far inferior to that of regular troops.
The two brought the medical squad’s exoskeleton armor back to the armored floating car. The memo recorded many professional data that they could not understand, data that might be of special significance to Oleg’s team.
Song Lan thought they would spend a whole day searching this area teeming with radiation and impolite zombies, but finding Oleg’s Squad surprisingly went smoother than expected. The main reason was that explosions loud enough to be heard several kilometers away.
Every explosion shook the earth and mountains, and from a distance, they could see the flames and black smoke.
Unexpectedly, Oleg and his team did not seem to be the ones being pushed into a corner; when the armored floating car stopped above the squad, the leading exoskeleton armor, with a flamethrower on the left hand, a revolving machine gun on the right hand, and a tactical missile set positioned on the right shoulder, had caused the series of explosions.
He now wanted to question Falena: you call this a Prosthetic Doctor?
Song Lan observed for a long time but couldn’t spot any member who looked like a doctor from the team.
In his experience, weren’t doctors who ended up in such environments mostly hiding in some corner, shivering and waiting to be rescued?
The town had been mostly destroyed, with the squad focusing its attack on a collapsed pit.
Song Lan didn’t know what building used to stand over the pit; whatever it was had been obliterated by the barrage of artillery, leaving not even debris. There weren’t many zombies haunting the town, and the vast majority were presented in the form of corpses to their eyes.
He had said before that zombies, this low-level threat, could only cause trouble among civilians. Against exoskeleton armor, they could only get crushed.
It is now the year 2166; not to mention exoskeleton armors, even subdermal armor technology could easily withstand zombie bites and scratches.
"This is a ’Commander IV’ exoskeleton armor, top-shelf stuff, and there aren’t many of these even in the detached departments,"
Lu Xiang recognized the big guy on the town square at a glance, this exoskeleton armor was much larger than the standard models. The user needed to install relevant neural feedback components and connect to the system’s terminal via a personal link upon entering. Correspondingly, the ’Commander IV’ model came equipped with heavy weaponry, and in a local encounter, it could often fight like an entire army on its own.
Never mind zombies, even if it encountered fully-armed Marauders, it would be an overwhelming strike.
"These must have been stolen; a medical team would certainly not be equipped with ’Commander IV’ models."
"Hey, friends, it’s not safe here; please leave immediately!"
Before the two could state their intentions, the ’Commander IV’ model raised its scanner towards them and used the loudspeaker to shout at them.
"We’ve come specifically to rescue you,"
Song Lan also used the loudspeaker to address the medical squad below.
"Rescue? We didn’t call for help."
Despite saying so, Oleg still gestured for his team members to clear a landing spot for the two of them, and then this big guy, almost twice the size of a standard exoskeleton armor, walked over to them, "I am Colonel Oleg, currently on a mission to investigate the source of infection. Who might you be...?"
"We’re contractors from Unified Technology."
Song Lan had to come up with a new identity for them on the fly, "A few days ago, someone from your team sent out a distress signal."
"A distress signal? That must have been Andrew’s doing. Where is that kid now?"
"He mutated."
Song Lan pushed the empty husk of Andrew’s exoskeleton armor in front of Oleg, "This is all we could bring back."
"Thanks, friend. There’s very important research data stored in there."
Oleg didn’t display excessive sorrow in front of them, then immediately asked, "What brings you to us?"
Umm...
This direct question left Song Lan momentarily lost for words.
Because in their original plan, even if Oleg’s Squad was still alive, they would surely be cornered somewhere. By appearing as saviors, they anticipated a smooth transition to inviting them to join their cause.
But the reality was that Oleg’s Squad didn’t need their rescue at all. Not only were they not cornered by the Infected, but they were also "barbecuing" in broad daylight.
This made things quite awkward.
Song Lan felt that if he now said "Welcome to District 17" or "Join the Bug Swarm," Oleg would probably look at him as if he were an idiot and then ask, "And who do you think you are?"
These people didn’t even listen to the orders from outside departments or the United Government; it was clear they wouldn’t pay any attention to two strangers like them.
Their first attempt at recruiting the Prosthetic Doctor had reached an impasse.
"We... are actually here to investigate, too."
Song Lan had to change the conversation strategy on the fly, saying, "The company is very interested in the source of the infection."
"But I must warn you, this place is full of dangers. One wrong step and you could lose your life."
Luckily, Oleg wasn’t hard to communicate with. He operated his exoskeleton armor to shake hands with Song Lan, saying, "See that hole over there?"
"Yes."
"It’s not just the infected townspeople in there, there are also some terrifying mutated creatures hiding. If we don’t clean them out while it’s still daylight, we’ll be attacked by these mutants at night."
"Mutated creatures? What kind of mutated creatures?"
Hearing these words, Song Lan’s eyes lit up.
Aren’t these the very brothers he hadn’t yet had the chance to meet?
"Ever heard about bats?"
"Heard of them."
"Creatures similar to bats, over a meter long, that can spit acid. If the acid hits you, not even the exoskeleton armor can save you."
