Chapter 190: Chapter 190: Flesh Workshop_1

"’Concerned citizen,’ sir, what is your opinion on human evolution?"

Having asked this question, Scarecrow waited inside the elevator, seeming ready not to press the elevator button unless Song Lan responded.

Song Lan hated situations where Scarecrow would ramble on and then suddenly throw a curveball question. It reminded him of his college math teacher.

Their math teacher was a friendly person who enjoyed randomly selecting a few lucky students for conversation during lunch in the cafeteria.

Then suddenly, he would throw out a mathematical problem and expect them to solve it when they returned to their dorms.

The situation now was no different.

He didn’t even know where the end of the universe was, so how could he possibly know the direction of human evolution?

Song Lan had never considered this question.

But since Scarecrow had asked sincerely, he had no choice but to answer, "Human evolution, it depends not only on individual effort but also takes into account the course of history."

With that said, the elevator fell into a prolonged silence. Scarecrow’s eyebrows were furrowed, as if he couldn’t understand the deep meaning of Song Lan’s words.

Song Lan didn’t blame him, for even he didn’t know what he had just said.

However, this sentence, whose meaning even he was uncertain of, seemed to give Scarecrow great inspiration. After murmuring "course of history" a few times, his face suddenly brightened.

"I never thought of it from this perspective."

While speaking, he pressed the button for the underground twenty-seventh floor. The elevator number quickly began to decrease. The pungent smell of blood got stronger and stronger as they descended.

When the elevator descended below the twentieth floor, Song Lan noticed something unusual through the crack in the elevator door. The doors no longer opened to a lab but led to some sort of bloody flesh part. Some flesh extended through the gap in the door, also causing blood to seep into the elevator.

When the elevator doors opened again, the refined advanced laboratory was nowhere to be seen. What appeared before them was a corridor completely enveloped in flesh.

At that moment, they seemed to be inside the stomach of a creature, and the secret of CTEA-32 seemed to be hidden at the end of this long hallway.

The smell of blood was so intense that they felt as if they were soaked in blood. With the dim light source, they could see the flesh wall above their heads squirming slightly.

The device illuminating their path could hardly be called a light anymore. It only retained the shape of a lamp with flesh parasitizing it. The bulb turned into an eye, emitting a dull red glow, whose illuminating ability was limited.

"This is where we mass-produce CTEA-32."

Scarecrow proudly introduced this place that could drive anyone mad to Song Lan. Walking ahead, he led Song Lan into the only room on the twenty-seventh floor.

More accurately, this was a deserted hall. Fleshy buds were wriggling around the hall serving the role of workers. They wrapped around a bunch of syringes and stretched them toward the massive stump made of flesh in the center of the hall.

The "stump" was extracting a tube of pus-filled blood. One of the working flesh buds passed the syringe to Scarecrow.

"As you can see, this is the assembly line of CTEA-32. I have tried to modify the genetic data as much as I can, but I still can’t make the injection subject retain self-awareness during the evolution process. They would rapidly assimilate into the mother body during the process of evolution, but due to being too far from the mother body, they don’t immediately receive commands from it. Hence, they fall into the most primitive instinct for killing."

Scarecrow paused for a while and then continued, "The focus of my current work is to somehow eliminate the side effects of CTEA-32. In my opinion, evolution is not true evolution if one cannot maintain consciousness."

For a moment, Song Lan did not know what to say.

Was he supposed to praise Scarecrow for having the spirit of scientific investigation?

"I later managed to make contact with Tesla Technology and found out that they had never deployed a biological sample research team, nor had they ever produced a pheromone that could communicate with mutated organisms."

Scarecrow looked at him with a fanatical look in his eyes and asked, "I am very curious, how did you communicate with those mutated organisms? This will greatly assist our research."

At this point, Song Lan finally understood why Scarecrow had brought him here.

As the regional head of the Barrosa Group, he had a fanaticism similar to that of extreme researchers.

His fanaticism even made him forget that he was dealing with an enemy and directly tried to learn the secret of communicating with the mutants.

"You want to know?"

"Of course. It concerns whether or not humans can complete their evolution."

"The former leader of the Twelfth Nation, where is he? Bring him here and I’ll tell you."

"It’s a deal."

Without any hesitation, Scarecrow agreed to Song Lan’s request.

The former leader was someone who the Minister of Internal Affairs had instructed Scarecrow to take special care of, but this life form didn’t confer any significant benefits to their research process.

Scarecrow looked at the fleshy wall to their left.

Under Song Lan’s shocked gaze, a part of the fleshy wall started to split. Gradually, it revealed a human silhouette. As the fleshy buds covering the figure slowly retracted, they exposed the former leader, who was unconscious.

The clothes on the former leader were soaked with blood, and his skin was covered with bloody stains and some substances that Song Lan couldn’t name.

The fleshy bud gently brought the former leader in front of him. Though the subject of their rescue mission was right there before his eyes, he instinctively stepped back.

The substances and smell coming from the former leader made him not want to touch the man.

Lieyang,

Good news, your father is alive,

Bad news, he is covered in filth, and we probably can’t take him.

As Song Lan was struggling mentally, the flesh bud released the former leader, and the man fell to the floor.

Song Lan had a chance to catch him, but at that moment, he stepped back.

"Now it’s your turn to fulfill your promise."

Scarecrow waited quietly for Song Lan’s answer. Song Lan took a bottle from his pocket and tossed it casually to Scarecrow.

Scarecrow caught the bottle. A flesh bud that looked similar to the meat tissue extended from his palm, punctured the bottle, and probed the liquid inside.

"This is water."

He reached a conclusion immediately.

"That’s right, it costs five cents a bottle at the supermarket. Buy a dozen, and you even get an extra bottle."

"Don’t make fun of me."

The expression on Scarecrow’s face became cold and fierce.

"I’m telling the truth." Song Lan shrugged, "If you don’t believe me, I can show you."

Before he could finish his sentence, the security personnel who had followed them into the underground lab suddenly raised their guns as if possessed. Even though their expressions were full of resistance and they tried to fight back, their guns were still slowly aimed at Scarecrow.

"Have you heard? Water is the source of life, and none of the creatures in this world can resist the allure of water."

"Bang, bang, bang—"

The sound of gunshots drowned out his voice.
