Enforcer Manual -
Chapter 191: Evolution Symphony_1
Chapter 191: Chapter 191: Evolution Symphony_1
The gunfire had lasted for more than ten seconds, until the Scarecrow was riddled with bullets, the many holes in his chest revealing a clear view of the other side.
Then, the fingers of the two security guards holding the trigger were forcibly stopped. Their skin burst open, not revealing bone, but worm-like organisms that crawled up the gun barrel like tendrils and quickly fused with the muzzle.
An eyeball sprouted at the sights, staring fixedly at Song Lan.
"This is Deputy Captain Eric saying hello to you."
Song Lan stared at the Scarecrow’s ruined body. At this moment, the bullet-ridden wounds were swiftly repairing themselves.
"Deputy Captain Eric?"
The shattered skull visibly regenerated and the wounds on the Scarecrow’s body healed within a short time. Only the cross-shaped scar at the back of his neck remained.
It seemed that the scar held significant meaning for him.
However, Song Lan couldn’t be sure if the creature evolving in an unknown direction was still the same one who had massacred the townsfolk of Sharp Cage Town.
The Scarecrow seemed to have no recollection of the name and asked back, "Who is that?"
"A Law Enforcer killed by your men."
"How boring."
During their conversation, the Scarecrow’s repair was fully complete. Not only flesh but even parts of his clothing had been mended. The evidence seen by Song Lan indicated that this indescribable flesh could parasitize more than just living beings, swiftly assimilating even mechanical and material things.
The Scarecrow heightened his tone, "Our current discussion is about the evolution of humanity. Personal feelings and gains or losses are utterly insignificant in this evolutionary chain! However, a person like you, who was born gifted, would be utterly incapable of hearing the voices of ordinary people!"
Based on Song Lan’s demonstration, he had fully understood something.
The ability to communicate with the Death God Crab was not due to genetic engineering and pheromones, but purely psychic abilities.
Interference type psychic abilities.
The Barrosa Group’s records indeed mentioned that some powerful interference type psychics could manipulate objects and even living beings solely with their psychic abilities.
Nevertheless, it was for this reason that the Scarecrow was disappointed.
He had never expected such an answer.
"Psychic abilities will never be the answer to mankind’s evolution."
His human silhouette collapsed with his bridling emotions. Then, the flesh underfoot connected to his ankle, and tendrils slowly crawled up his body, sinking him gradually into the ground. However, his voice did not cease but seemed to come from everywhere.
Seemingly spoken by dozens of people in various locations, "Abandoning the majority for the advancement of the less than 1% could not possibly represent the future of mankind. You do not understand, you completely do not understand."
His voice triggered a tremor underfoot, the very next moment, spikes erupted from the ground.
The once flat terrain turned into a forest full of needles and silence.
When time surged back into motion, Song Lan placed the still unconscious former leader on the ground.
He had come to understand something.
The true opponent he faced was neither the Scarecrow nor his mercenaries. An unidentified viral life-form was already infecting the military fortress or as the other party said, perhaps this was the new evolutionary path cultivated through genetic modification by the Barrosa Group.
Song Lan stood at the entrance of the fortress, as a flurry of hurried brake sounds echoed from behind.
"Huh, it’s you?"
Aishi had spotted the "civic-minded citizen" she had crossed paths with several times in Sector Seventeen, next to his feet was the unconscious former leader soaked in blood.
What on earth had happened here?
However, she soon learned the answer.
The rumbling from underground rapidly approached them. This tremor tore apart the ground, exposing countless pieces of flesh that continuously ascended from the crevices. Within ten short seconds, this layer of flesh had devoured most of the military zone. Under its control, the armored vehicles, tanks, and airplanes parked in the fortress were granted lives within an instance.
These warfare machines started to operate in weird ways with no one in command.
These half-biological, half-mechanical mortifications were fast approaching them.
The entire military fortress had become their enemy in a very literal sense - war machines, armory, even the plants and trees had "come to life".
"What on earth did you do? What are these things?"
Aishi started peppering him with questions from within the car, even in her years of campaigning, she had never seen such grotesque beings. After breaking through the ground, it didn’t stop expanding and continued to spread after those war machines that charged at them.
She even started suspecting if this lifeform was given enough time, it could cover the entire desert.
For some reason, she felt that the creature before her was extremely angry.
The answer to her question was a dull thud.
Looking in the direction of the sound, the unconscious former leader was tossed onto the back seat of their vehicle. The scent of blood instantly filled the confined space within the car.
"Hey, you’re just in time."
Song Lan, standing in front of the car, waved to the people inside, "Could you help bring him back?"
"And you?"
Aishi asked almost without thinking. Facing unknown entities which were still spreading, the right step would be to retreat, regroup, and return later.
"I still have unfinished business with him."
"Running is pointless."
A roar from underground interrupted their conversation.
While the reason was uncertain, the Scarecrow or rather this mysterious lifeform seemed genuinely furious.
Song Lan had a theory that the other party seemed to hold deep-rooted prejudices against psychics.
Along with the roar, the warfare vehicles fired at them simultaneously.
Bursts of scorching flame drove them from all directions. The driver from the Rebel Army instinctively stomped on the accelerator, though he knew that no matter how fast the vehicle was, it wouldn’t outrun the aim of the artillery fire.
However, when he realized, he found that the vehicle had already reached several hundred meters away. The ground pulverized by the artillery fire was clearly visible through the rear-view mirror.
The bang of the explosions quickly caught up, making the driver not dare to slacken the speed.
"I admit, I used to have strong prejudices as well."
Song Lan, looking at everything absorbed and infected by the flesh through the flames and the smoke, "I’ve always thought those who chose physical modification were just ’trash fish’."
But this world...
Seems to be much vaster than he had imagined.
