Chapter 94: Find Leo
Chapter 94: Find Leo
The sun shone brightly over the park, casting long shadows across the grassy fields.
Children’s laughter filled the air as Leo and Aria sat on a checkered blanket with Ava, their turkey sandwiches cut into fun shapes.
Leo held up a star-shaped sandwich proudly, his little face glowing with excitement.
"Ava, look! My sandwich is a star!" Leo said, giggling.
Ava smiled at the boy, reaching over to ruffle his hair. "I see that, Leo! Stars taste better, don’t they?"
"Uh-huh!" Leo nodded vigorously before taking a big bite.
Aria, sitting beside her brother, was munching on a heart-shaped sandwich.
She looked up at Ava with a grin, her cheeks stuffed with food. "Mine’s a heart! Mama says hearts are for love."
"That’s right, Aria," Ava said, chuckling.
She adored how sweet the children were, their innocence a welcome break from the complexities of their world.
Leo suddenly dropped his sandwich and turned toward the playground where other kids were laughing and sliding down a brightly colored set of slides.
His eyes lit up. "Ava, can I go play on the slide?"
Ava hesitated. "I don’t know, Leo. I think we should stay here for a bit longer."
"Please, Ava?" Leo asked, his big blue eyes pleading. "Just for a little while?"
Ava sighed, looking at Leo’s hopeful face.
She could hardly ever say no to him when he looked at her like that.
Glancing over at Aria, who was still nibbling on her sandwich, she finally gave in.
"Alright," she said, "but stay where I can see you, okay?"
Leo’s face broke into a wide grin. "Thanks, Ava!"
He jumped up and ran off toward the slide.
Ava watched him go, smiling softly as she turned her attention back to Aria. "Do you want to go too, Aria?"
Aria shook her head, still focused on her food. "No, I’m gonna finish my sandwich first."
Ava nodded, glancing at her wristwatch.
A few minutes passed as Aria finished her food, and they both sat quietly, enjoying the peaceful afternoon.
But then Ava noticed something—Leo had been gone for longer than she expected.
Frowning, she turned toward the playground.
The slides were still busy with children, but Leo was nowhere in sight.
"Aria, let’s go check on your brother," Ava said, a hint of concern creeping into her voice.
Aria blinked up at her, then stood up. "Okay. Maybe he’s hiding."
Ava stood, taking Aria’s hand, and the two of them walked over to the slides.
The other children were laughing and playing, but there was no sign of Leo.
"Leo?" Ava called out, walking around the slide. "Leo, where are you?"
Aria began looking too, her little face scrunched up in concentration. "Leo? Come out!"
But there was no answer.
Ava’s heart started beating faster as she scanned the area.
She walked around the playground, checking behind trees and bushes, but Leo was nowhere to be found.
"Where could he have gone?" Ava muttered under her breath, trying not to panic.
Aria tugged on her hand, her voice small. "Ava, where’s Leo?"
Ava knelt down to Aria’s height, trying to stay calm for her sake. "I don’t know, sweetie, but we’re going to find him, okay? Stay close to me."
She pulled out her phone and quickly dialed Derek’s number.
He picked up on the second ring.
"Ava?" Derek’s voice came through the phone. "What’s going on?"
"It’s Leo," Ava said, her voice tight. "He went to play on the slide, and now I can’t find him. We’ve looked everywhere."
"I’ll be there in five minutes," Derek replied, his tone sharp. "Stay put, don’t leave the area."
Ava hung up and took a deep breath, trying to keep herself composed.
She squeezed Aria’s hand gently. "We’re going to find him, Aria. Don’t worry."
Aria looked up at her, eyes wide. "Do you think he’s playing hide and seek?"
"I hope so," Ava said, forcing a smile. "But we’re going to keep looking until we find him, okay?"
Five minutes later, Derek arrived, his tall frame moving quickly toward them. His face was a mask of concern as he reached Ava and Aria.
"Any sign of him?" Derek asked, looking around the park.
"No," Ava replied, her voice shaking a little. "We’ve searched everywhere. I don’t understand how he could’ve just disappeared."
Derek scanned the area with narrowed eyes. "We’ll find him. Let’s keep looking."
Together, they combed the entire playground, calling out Leo’s name, but there was still no response.
Derek even asked some of the other parents if they had seen Leo, but no one had noticed him leaving the playground.
Ava’s stomach twisted in knots as the minutes ticked by.
She pulled out her phone again, her fingers trembling as she considered calling the police.
Derek caught her eye. "I think it’s time to involve the cops."
Ava nodded, her throat dry. "Yeah... okay."
Derek immediately dialed the local authorities, explaining the situation.
Ava listened as he gave a detailed description of Leo—his age, his sandy-blond hair, his bright blue shirt with dinosaurs on it.
As Derek talked, Ava held onto Aria’s hand tightly, trying to keep it together for the little girl who was now clinging to her leg.
After hanging up, Derek turned to Ava, his expression serious. "They’re sending someone over right now. But we need to stay here in case Leo comes back."
Ava nodded, though her mind was racing.
She couldn’t stop thinking about how Leo could have disappeared in the span of just a few minutes.
He had been so happy, running toward the slides with that bright smile on his face.
"Leo," she whispered, barely audible.
But as the seconds stretched into minutes, a new worry gnawed at her—a fear that went beyond the missing boy.
How would Aurora feel if she found out?
The thought of Aurora’s reaction weighed heavily on Ava’s heart.
Aurora had entrusted her with the children, and if anything happened to Leo, she couldn’t imagine the devastation Aurora would face.
The guilt clawed at her, making it harder to breathe.
She swallowed hard, pushing back the panic.
"Please, let us find him before Aurora has to know," Ava murmured to herself, her heart pounding faster.
---
Far away from the park, a black van sped down a quiet road.
Inside, Leo lay unconscious, his small frame strapped to a seat.
Two men in black suits sat in the front seats, their faces hard and expressionless.
One of the men glanced at Leo through the rearview mirror. "He’s still out," he muttered to the driver.
The driver grunted. "Good. Let’s get this done quickly."
