Chapter 80: Grave Expression
Without hesitation, Aurora lunged at Alpha Grey.
Her powerful form collided with him, sending him flying through the air.
He crashed to the ground with a thud, groaning in pain.
Aurora’s gaze turned to her son, her wolf’s eyes softening for a brief moment.
She would protect him—no matter what.
Alpha Grey groaned, pushing himself up from the ground.
His eyes glowed with rage as he transformed into his wolf—a massive beast, towering over Aurora. His dark fur bristled, and his growl reverberated through the room like thunder.
Aurora’s breath hitched for a moment.
This was her first time in wolf form, her first time facing someone so powerful.
The sheer size of her father’s wolf was intimidating.
But her eyes darted to the tub where her son lay, and the fear melted away.
She couldn’t afford to be scared. Not now.
With newfound determination, Aurora braced herself and charged.
Her white wolf collided with Alpha Grey’s hulking form, and the room filled with snarls and the sound of claws ripping through fur.
They circled each other, snapping and lunging.
Alpha Grey’s strength was overwhelming, and with every hit, Aurora felt the weight of his experience.
But she didn’t back down. She had to save her baby.
As they clashed again, Aurora heard the sound of footsteps rushing in.
She looked up briefly and saw Derek and his men pouring into the room.
Derek fired off a shot, hitting Alpha Grey’s guard square in the chest, and the guard crumpled to the floor.
Aurora’s eyes flickered back to her father, but Alpha Grey took advantage of the distraction and slammed into her, knocking her to the ground.
She struggled, trying to push him off, but he was too strong.
His jaws snapped at her, and she barely dodged in time.
Just when it seemed he might overpower her, a loud gunshot echoed through the room.
Alpha Grey froze, a shocked look in his glowing eyes, before collapsing to the ground.
His massive wolf form slowly shifted back to his human self, and blood pooled beneath him.
Aurora didn’t waste a second.
She shifted back into her human form and rushed to the tub.
Her baby floated in the water, his small body barely moving.
She quickly and gently lifted him from the water, cradling him against her chest.
"Come on, baby," she whispered desperately, leaning down to check if he was breathing.
She pressed her ear close to his mouth, feeling the faintest breath against her cheek.
Relief washed over her for a moment, and she exhaled shakily. "He’s breathing..."
She looked down at her father, bleeding heavily on the floor, then at his fallen guard.
Disgust welled up inside her.
"Derek," she called, her voice hard, "your men should take them both to the Pack Council. They’ll answer for this. I’ll make sure they pay for what they’ve done."
Derek nodded without question, motioning for his men to drag Alpha Grey and the guard out.
As they moved, Aurora’s attention turned back to the tub, her eyes narrowing in confusion.
The water shimmered with silvery coins at the bottom.
Her heart dropped.
She looked down at her baby, her breath catching in her throat.
His back—there were burns. And his breathing... it had slowed.
Her hands trembled as she looked him over, panic creeping into her voice.
"No... no, no, no," she whispered frantically.
His tiny chest barely moved, his breaths shallow.
"Derek!" she screamed, her voice sharp and commanding. "Call an ambulance. Now!"
Derek, startled, immediately pulled out his phone, dialing with urgency.
Aurora held her baby close, her mind racing. She couldn’t lose him. Not after everything.
---
Aurora rushed into the hospital, her heart pounding as she cradled her baby against her chest.
Derek had handed her his jacket just before they arrived, and she wore it now, trying to gather herself as they hurried through the bright, sterile hallways.
The baby was whisked away by the doctors, leaving Aurora standing there, feeling both numb and terrified.
The hospital buzzed with movement, nurses rushing around and machines beeping in the distance.
Aurora’s gaze followed the medical team as they disappeared into a room, carrying her son.
She stood frozen, the cold air biting through Derek’s jacket, her hands still slightly trembling.
Derek appeared beside her, his face stern and calm.
"They’ll do everything they can," he said softly, though his eyes showed a flicker of concern.
Aurora nodded, her voice barely above a whisper, "They have to." She couldn’t afford to think otherwise.
Minutes felt like hours as she waited.
The sterile smell of the hospital was suffocating, and every passing second made her chest tighten.
Just when she thought she might lose it, a doctor emerged from the room.
"Ms. Grey?" he called, his face serious as he approached.
Aurora straightened, her stomach churning. "Yes, that’s me. How is he?"
The doctor sighed, glancing at his clipboard before meeting her gaze. "Your baby has experienced severe drowning and is showing signs of cardiac distress. We’re doing everything possible to stabilize his condition, but he’s not out of danger yet."
Aurora’s knees almost buckled, but she forced herself to stand tall.
"Cardiac distress?" she echoed, her voice barely hiding the fear. "What does that mean? Will he make it?"
"We’re monitoring him closely. Right now, his heart is struggling to function properly. We’re trying different interventions to get it back to a stable rhythm." The doctor’s face remained calm, but his words weighed heavily in the air.
Aurora clenched her fists. "Just... just do whatever it takes. Please. I can’t lose him."
"We’re doing everything we can," the doctor reassured her before walking back into the room.
For the next hour, Aurora sat in a chair outside the operating room, staring at the wall, praying silently.
Derek stood by her side, not saying much, but his presence felt grounding.
Each second seemed to stretch longer than the last, but Aurora didn’t let herself cry.
She couldn’t break down—not when her son needed her to be strong.
Finally, the doctor came out again.
This time, his expression was grave.
Aurora stood up immediately. "What’s going on?" she asked, her voice a bit more forceful now.
"I’m afraid the tests indicate that your baby’s heart has failed due to the drowning," the doctor said quietly. "We’ve tried to support his heart function, but it’s not responding well. We need to discuss options moving forward."
Aurora’s breath caught in her throat, and for a moment, she felt like she might shatter.
But she swallowed it down, forcing herself to stay focused.
"What options?" she demanded. "What do we do now?"
"We’re considering implanting a mechanical heart to keep his circulation going while we explore more permanent solutions," the doctor explained. "It’s a procedure that will buy us time, but we need your consent to move forward."
Aurora nodded quickly. "If that’s what he needs, then do it. I don’t care how—just save him."
The doctor gave her a reassuring nod. "We’ll get him prepped for surgery. I’ll have the surgical team ready."
