Chapter 73: Pity Or Mockery
Chapter 73: Pity Or Mockery
Julia’s face drained of color, her rage mingling with panic.
"You don’t understand!" she hissed, leaning closer, her voice shaking. "This could ruin me. My career. My reputation. You were supposed to be on my side!"
The man met her desperate gaze with a cold, indifferent stare.
"On your side?" he repeated, his voice dripping with amusement. "Lady, I did the job you paid me for. Everything else? Well, that’s on you."
Julia’s heart raced as her mind spun, trying to process the reality of the situation.
She thought she had everything under control, but now, everything was falling apart—and this man, the very one she had hired, was at the center of it.
"Why?" she asked, her voice quieter now but no less venomous. "Why betray me like this?"
The man leaned forward slightly, his eyes dark and unreadable. "Because," he said, "in this business, people like you? You’re just a paycheck. Nothing more. If a better deal comes along..." He trailed off, shrugging again as if it were the simplest truth in the world.
Julia trembled with anger, but beneath that was fear—fear that she had lost control of everything.
Without another word, she grabbed her bag and stormed out of the club, her mind already racing for a way to salvage what was left of her life.
---
A few days later, Julia sat in an office chair, her face buried in her hands.
The video had been circulating for days, and despite her desperate attempts to contain the damage, nothing had worked.
She had poured over a million dollars into hackers and cybersecurity specialists, hoping they could erase the scandal from social media, but all had come back with the same grim report: the person responsible for leaking the video was too powerful, and their efforts had been fruitless.
Now, Julia faced an even bigger problem.
The sound of fingers tapping on the table pulled her from her thoughts.
Amos, Lucas’s business advisor and assistant, sat across from her, his expression stoic as always.
"Julia Mayhem," Amos called, his voice calm but firm.
Julia lifted her head, her eyes tired and ringed with dark circles from sleepless nights.
Seated beside Amos was Lucas, who watched her with a mixture of concern and frustration.
He noticed how worn down she looked, but he knew this meeting was unavoidable.
His company, the Rossi’s entertainment company, had already taken a hit from the fallout of the video—small losses, but the risk of greater damage loomed ahead if they didn’t act fast.
"Julia," Lucas began, choosing his words carefully, "I’m really sorry about all of this. But the reality is, I have to put my business first. The company’s reputation is on the line, and we’re already seeing the effects. If this continues..." He paused, the weight of his words clear without needing further explanation.
Julia’s lips quivered, her eyes welling with tears.
She adjusted the cap she wore low over her face, her hair tied back in a bun, trying to maintain whatever dignity she had left.
"I understand," she whispered, her voice barely audible as she glanced at Lucas.
Her shame was evident, though she fought hard to contain it.
Lucas gave a small nod before signaling to Amos, who pulled out a folder from his briefcase and placed it in front of Julia.
The document inside was marked "Contract Termination Agreement."
Amos slid a pen across the table toward her.
Julia’s heart sank as she looked at the title of the document.
The bitter taste of failure settled in her throat as she picked up the pen with a trembling hand.
Signing the agreement meant severing her business ties with Lucas, but given the scandal and the losses Rossi Entertainment had faced, it was the only logical choice.
She knew it. He knew it.
With a shaky breath, Julia scribbled her signature on the document.
Lucas leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable as he watched her sign.
"We’ll keep the original document, and Amos will send you a copy for your records," he explained, his tone firm but lacking any malice.
He had always valued their friendship, but things had spiraled too far out of control.
Julia nodded, her throat tight.
She swallowed hard and stood, avoiding eye contact with both men.
"Thank you... for being a good partner," she managed, her voice thick with emotion.
Lucas didn’t reply immediately.
He just gave her a curt nod, watching her walk out of the office, her head low, the weight of her downfall clinging to her as she disappeared through the door.
After leaving Lucas’s office, Julia wandered into a nearby bar, her mind clouded with frustration and shame.
She sat in a corner booth, drowning her sorrows in one drink after another.
The mocking whispers and glances from people nearby did nothing to stop her.
She barely noticed them, but their words reached her ears, further fueling her need to numb herself.
As she took another sip, she heard footsteps approaching.
She blinked, her vision hazy, and looked to the side, where she saw a pair of long legs in tailored suit pants.
She slowly lifted her gaze, her eyes blurry from the alcohol.
Standing before her was a man in a sharp suit, his face unclear through her drunken haze.
The man looked down at her, amusement flickering across his features.
"Even the man you got involved with isn’t interested in helping you," he said, his voice laced with mockery.
Julia felt a wave of annoyance wash over her.
Who was this man? And why was he here, trying to humiliate her like everyone else?
She didn’t care who he was; she just hated him for speaking to her like that.
The man continued, "Ben managed to blur his face from the videos. He kept his reputation intact. Meanwhile, here you are."
His tone shifted slightly, though still sharp. "Honestly, I feel pity."
Julia raised an eyebrow, her mind sluggish but catching onto his words.
"Pity or mockery?" she asked, her voice slurred but defiant.
A smirk crept across the man’s thin lips.
"Honestly? It’s both," he replied coolly.
He tucked his hands into his pockets, his expression unreadable. "But I can help you."
Julia’s drunken haze faltered for a moment. Her heart skipped a beat.
She squinted at the man, trying to discern whether he was being serious or just toying with her.
"Help me?" she echoed, disbelief in her voice.
No one had offered to help her—not the people she had helped rise in the industry, not her so-called friends.
And now, here was a stranger, offering a lifeline.
The man pulled a business card from his pocket and dropped it onto the table.
"Contact me, and we’ll discuss how I can help you get that video removed. Maybe even help you get back on your feet," he said, his tone almost casual, as if this were a routine transaction.
Julia stared at the card, unsure if this was some sort of trick.
She wanted to grab it, but doubt gnawed at her.
Why would a stranger want to help her when even those closest to her had abandoned her?
The man turned and walked away without waiting for her response, leaving Julia sitting there with the card in front of her.
She reached out slowly, picking it up, her mind racing despite the alcohol dulling her senses.
This could be her chance.
But could she trust him?
Julia’s grip tightened on the card as she watched the man leave, her thoughts swirling with the faint hope that maybe, just maybe, this stranger could help her regain what she had lost.
