Chapter 60: Emergency Message

Sophia lay motionless on the bed as Derek carefully placed her there.

The room was faintly illuminated by the soft glow of a bedside lamp.

It was the same room Sophia had stayed in at Aurora’s mansion.

The familiar surroundings did little to calm the unease that hung in the air.

Aurora stood nearby, her face a mix of concern and focus as she stared at Sophia.

She moved closer, sitting beside Sophia, gently placing her hand on Sophia’s cold one.

Aurora glanced at Derek, her expression masking the worry that had gnawed at her for hours.

"How is she?" Aurora asked softly, her eyes not leaving Sophia’s pale face.

Derek straightened and checked his wristwatch.

"She’ll be fine," Derek replied, his tone confident. "She’ll regain consciousness anytime..."

He looked at his watch again and finished, "Now."

Almost on cue, Sophia’s eyes shot open.

She gasped, wide-eyed, scanning the room with confusion.

Aurora quickly pulled her hand away from Sophia’s hand.

Then, Aurora masked her emotions and her face shifted to an expression of indifference.

She stood up, folding her arms across her midsection, her plush robe draping gracefully over her frame.

When she spoke, her tone was cold and distant.

"So, you’re awake?"

Sophia nodded slowly, her head throbbing as she tried to sit up.

Her hand instinctively went to her forehead, massaging the dull ache.

"What happened?" Sophia asked, her voice faint.

She paused as memories rushed back—the brutal encounter with Hades.

She shuddered and touched her neck, her fingers brushing over the faint red marks left by his grip.

The feeling of his hands choking the life out of her still lingered, making her tremble.

Aurora stood firm, watching as Sophia pieced everything together.

She decided to speak.

"I knew Hades would try to kill you. If not now, eventually," Aurora began, her tone matter-of-fact. "So I had a plan."

Sophia frowned, confused.

"A plan?" she echoed, her brow furrowing.

Aurora nodded and gestured toward Derek. "I ordered him to slip something into your food at the office. A drug to slow your heartbeat, make it seem like you were dead. We knew Hades’ men would take you, and just as expected, they dumped what they thought was your corpse."

Sophia’s confusion deepened.

She rubbed her neck again, still unsure of how she had survived.

"So... was I reborn or something?" Her voice cracked with disbelief. "I remember losing strength, losing consciousness. I... I thought I died."

Derek stepped forward, his tone polite but firm. "The drug made you appear dead, but you weren’t. It slowed your vitals to the point where Hades believed you were gone. But it was all just a trick. You didn’t die."

Sophia exhaled sharply, relief flooding her senses.

A small, grateful smile crossed her face. She turned to Aurora, her eyes softening.

"Thank you," she whispered.

But Aurora remained cold, her expression unchanging. She didn’t return the smile.

Sophia’s heart sank slightly as she realized Aurora hadn’t forgiven her.

A distant look clouded Aurora’s eyes, and Sophia could sense that the rift between them hadn’t healed.

Aurora stepped away, moving toward a nearby table.

She opened her bag and pulled out several brown envelopes.

Walking back to Sophia, Aurora handed them over.

"These are everything you’ll need to hide far from Hades’ reach," Aurora said, her voice still detached.

Curious, Sophia quickly opened the envelopes.

Inside, she found a two-million-dollar check, a passport, a visa, and an ID.

Tears welled up in Sophia’s eyes. She couldn’t believe the lengths Aurora had gone to in order to help her, even after all she had done.

"You’ll be leaving the country tonight with your mother," Aurora continued. "Everything’s prepared. If you’re still worried about Hades, Derek will escort you to the airport."

Sophia nodded, barely able to speak.

A tear rolled down her cheek as she nodded again, overwhelmed by the sweet gesture.

She hadn’t even noticed she was crying until Aurora’s voice cut through the room.

"What are you doing?" Aurora asked, her tone sharp.

Sophia quickly wiped the tears away and let out a small chuckle.

"It’s... it’s tears of joy," she explained, trying to compose herself.

Inwardly, Sophia began to reflect on everything.

She had once believed that Aurora had turned dangerous, using her to manipulate events, particularly with Lucas’s situation.

But now, as she looked at Aurora, standing stoically in her robe, Sophia realized the truth—Aurora had only scared her to make her comply.

Despite her coldness, Aurora still cared, still valued the friendship they once had.

But guilt weighed heavily on Sophia.

She felt ashamed for betraying Aurora, for doubting her.

She looked up, her eyes brimming with remorse. "After I leave... do you think... we could be friends again?"

Aurora’s response was immediate and firm. "No."

The word hit Sophia like a slap.

She hung her head in shame, disappointment washing over her.

Aurora watched her for a moment, her own heart conflicted.

Inwardly, Aurora longed to forgive Sophia, to let go of the past. But she couldn’t. Not after what Sophia had done.

Letting her back into her life would only invite more heartbreak, more betrayal.

Aurora couldn’t afford that risk.

Derek cleared his throat, checking his wristwatch again. "We should get going," he said gently, turning to Sophia. "You don’t want to miss your flight."

Sophia swallowed hard, blinking back the tears.

She stood and grabbed her pre-packed luggage, her movements stiff with embarrassment.

Without another word, she walked toward the door, Derek following close behind.

Aurora watched them leave, her expression unreadable.

But as the door closed behind Sophia, a small part of Aurora wished things could have been different.

She stood in the quiet room, lost in her thoughts, when the door suddenly swung open.

Ava rushed in, her footsteps hurried and unsteady. She clutched a phone in her hand, her face a mask of panic.

Aurora snapped out of her thoughts and looked up sharply.

Seeing Ava’s distress, her brow furrowed.

Concern filled her eyes as she tried to read the situation.

"What’s wrong?" Aurora asked, her voice firm but laced with unease.

She raised an eyebrow, bracing for what Ava had to say.

Ava stopped in the middle of the room, breathless, her chest rising and falling rapidly.

She held out the phone as if it were the bearer of bad news, but words failed her for a moment.

Aurora’s gaze flicked from Ava’s pale face to the phone.

"Ava," Aurora pressed, stepping closer. "Tell me what happened."

Ava swallowed hard, her grip tightening around the phone. "It’s an emergency message," she finally said, her voice trembling. "From the Rossi."
