Chapter 61: Rossi
Chapter 61: Rossi
Upon hearing the name "Rossi," Aurora hissed softly, memories flashing through her mind—Nora and Madam Rossi confronting her in the hotel, accusing her of sharing beds with wealthy men.
The bitterness from that day lingered, but Aurora had learned to shrug off their spiteful remarks.
She sat back on the bed, her body relaxing into the soft covers as if she didn’t have a care in the world.
Ava, still standing in the middle of the room, was stunned by Aurora’s calm demeanor.
Aurora waved a hand dismissively at her.
"Forget about it," she said, her voice casual. "Anything involving Madam Rossi and Nora Rossi is nothing to worry about. They only try to peck at me, annoy me. That’s all."
Ava shook her head, stepping closer. "No, ma’am, it’s different from what you think it is. It’s an emergency message from Nana Rossi."
Aurora’s face immediately changed.
The name "Nana Rossi" held more weight than any petty confrontation with Madam Rossi or Nora.
Her gaze sharpened, and she turned her full attention to Ava.
For a brief moment, Aurora fought the urge to react too quickly, recalling the doctor’s advice about managing stress for the sake of her pregnancy.
If this had been the old her, she might’ve jumped up and rushed out the door.
But now, with more control, she rested her hand on her belly, whispering to herself to relax.
Inhaling deeply, then exhaling softly, she centered herself and looked back at Ava.
"So, what’s the message about?" Aurora asked. "Is Nana Rossi or Lucas in trouble?"
It was clear to Ava now—Aurora cared only for Lucas and Nana Rossi in that family. The rest? She couldn’t be bothered.
"They didn’t give details," Ava replied, her tone still urgent. "All it says is that you need to come to the Rossi mansion immediately. It’s urgent."
Aurora gave a firm nod. She rose from the bed slowly, her calm demeanor intact. "Prepare the car," she instructed Ava, her voice polite but carrying the weight of someone used to giving orders.
Ava nodded quickly and exited the room to make the arrangements.
Moments later, Aurora had changed into a simple black evening gown with elegant silver accents, her hair swept into a low bun.
The sleek look matched her mood—controlled, but ready.
Ava returned, and before long, the driver was whisking her away toward the Rossi mansion.
As the driver pulled up to the familiar gates, Aurora felt an odd pang—not for the house itself, but for Nana Rossi. She missed the warmth and care the older woman always showed her.
When the car came to a stop, Aurora stepped out and walked through the grand entrance, greeted warmly by the maid who led her toward the dining hall.
Upon entering, she saw Nana Rossi seated at the head of the table.
Nora and Madam Rossi sat to the side, their eyes already on her.
Aurora’s keen instincts immediately picked up on something off.
Nana Rossi glanced at her, then quickly looked away, an uncharacteristic coldness in her demeanor.
Aurora greeted her, "Good evening, Nana," but Nana Rossi’s only response was a dismissive huff.
Aurora’s heart sank, though she kept her composure.
What was going on?
The maids moved around, serving food with precision.
Aurora found herself drawn to the aroma of the dishes before her, her stomach growling despite the sudden coldness in the room.
Something about the meals prepared by others always triggered her appetite, though when she cooked for herself, she often felt indifferent.
She shifted uncomfortably in her seat, unsure of why Nana Rossi seemed upset but too proud to ask outright.
Once the maids finished, Nana Rossi gave them a brief nod, signaling for them to leave.
They obeyed, bowing slightly before retreating from the room.
Aurora picked up her fork and began eating, hoping the act would calm her nerves.
The food was delicious, but the atmosphere was anything but.
Aurora felt Nora and Madam Rossi’s glares on her, their contempt evident as they watched her chew.
She ignored them, taking another bite. But just as she began to enjoy the meal, Nana Rossi’s voice cut through the silence, sharp and pointed.
"Aurora."
Aurora’s heart skipped a beat. She looked up from her plate, her cheeks still full of food, fork halfway to her mouth. She quickly swallowed and placed her fork down, her gaze meeting Nana Rossi’s cold stare.
"Yes, Nana?"
The older woman’s eyes narrowed. "Is it true? I heard from Nora and her... jobless mother," she spat the words, glancing disdainfully at Madam Rossi, "that you and Lucas are divorced."
Aurora felt her heart drop, her pulse quickening.
Oh no...
Aurora couldn’t meet Nana Rossi’s eyes right away.
The regret of not telling her about the divorce sooner now weighed heavily on her.
The bond she’d cherished with Nana might be damaged beyond repair, all because of Nora and her mother.
Aurora shifted her gaze toward them, catching their smug expressions.
Their efforts to hide the satisfaction they felt at this moment were pointless—Aurora saw it all.
She clenched her fists under the table, fighting back the urge to snap at them.
It was clear to her now that this was their petty revenge for the incident at the hotel.
After a moment, she released her fists, letting out a quiet sigh, though her expression remained calm.
Nora, still smirking, leaned back in her chair, looking almost ready to laugh.
She shot a glance at Aurora, clearly expecting her to bow her head in shame, as if she’d already won. But when Nora turned to see Aurora’s face, she was met with a cold, sharp look—a bombastic side-eye that immediately silenced her excitement.
Nora cleared her throat awkwardly and turned her attention back to her plate, suddenly very interested in her food.
Aurora finally turned her gaze back to Nana Rossi, her voice soft but sincere. "I’m sorry, Nana. Lucas and I... we were in a complicated situation. We divorced because things got difficult."
Nana Rossi’s disappointment was clear. "And you couldn’t tell me?" Her voice had a slight tremor, a mix of hurt and frustration. "I thought you considered me like a mother, that you could tell me anything, Aurora."
Aurora’s heart sank at Nana’s words. She had no excuse for keeping the truth from her. "I was wrong," Aurora admitted, her tone filled with genuine regret. "I should have told you. I should’ve trusted you."
Before Nana could respond, Madam Rossi, who had been watching with sharp eyes, seized the moment.
She shifted in her seat and, with a smooth, almost predatory tone, spoke. "Now that you and Lucas are no longer together, it seems only fair that you hand over the Rossi family heirloom."
