Chapter 49: A Jerk
Chapter 49: A Jerk
As Aurora continued eating, her thoughts drifted to the pups growing inside her.
A soft smile lingered on her lips, but then her mind wandered to Lucas.
Something about her bond with him had shifted—her body, her wolf, had become more insistent on him.
It was strange, unlike anything she had experienced before.
Her feelings for him had always been there, but now, they seemed to intensify, as though her entire being was tied to him in a way she couldn’t explain.
She glanced at Sophia, her curiosity growing. "I don’t really remember what happened after the accident," she said, her voice uncertain.
Sophia’s expression changed for just a moment—a flicker of something unspoken in her eyes.
She gulped, her fingers tightening on the edge of her scarf before she quickly masked her unease with a forced smile.
"Oh, um..." Sophia cleared her throat, trying to regain her composure. "Don’t worry about it."
Aurora, too focused on her own thoughts, didn’t notice anything off. "Can you tell me what happened last night?" she asked, her voice soft but genuinely curious.
Sophia hesitated, her hands fidgeting slightly in her lap. "Well... a lot happened."
Intrigued, Aurora slowed her eating, setting her spoon down.
She watched Sophia closely, sensing that there was more to the story. "Go on," she encouraged.
Sophia sighed softly, glancing at the floor as if trying to gather her thoughts. "The accident... it happened right outside the venue. Hades and I were there, and when we saw the crash, we tried to help. The ambulance came pretty quickly and took you to the hospital. It was... chaotic. The whole thing ended up all over the internet."
Aurora listened carefully, her mind piecing together the fragments of the night she couldn’t remember. "But... how did I recover so fast?" she asked, a frown creasing her forehead. "I really thought I wasn’t going to make it. It felt... bad."
Sophia’s lips parted, her eyes flickering with something unreadable before she licked her lips nervously. "Well, Hades ordered the best surgeon in the city to take care of you," she lied smoothly. "You know him—always stepping up when it’s serious."
Aurora furrowed her brow but didn’t press the matter.
The explanation seemed plausible enough, and she trusted Sophia.
"I guess I owe him, then. But... what about Lucas?" Aurora asked, her voice growing softer. "Did Lucas come? Was he with me at all?"
Sophia’s face hardened at the mention of Lucas.
She let out a short, annoyed hiss. "Lucas? Don’t even mention that jerk’s name."
Aurora blinked, surprised by the sharpness in Sophia’s tone. "What? Did Lucas do something wrong while I was unconscious?"
Sophia shook her head quickly, her face twisted in disgust. "No, no. It’s not that. It’s just that Lucas didn’t bother to visit you, Aurora. Your accident was all over the internet—everyone saw it. But did he come? No. He never cared enough to show up."
The words hit Aurora like a blow, and she stared at Sophia in disbelief. "He knew? He knew about the accident and didn’t come?"
Sophia’s expression turned bitter as she pulled out her phone. "See for yourself," she said, scrolling through her screen before showing Aurora a video.
It was footage of Aurora’s destroyed SUV, crushed and mangled from the impact. The video had gone viral, the views and likes climbing.
Aurora’s eyes narrowed as she noticed Lucas’s verified page among those who had liked the video.
"He knew," Sophia said, her voice low with frustration. "He knew, and he didn’t even care enough to check on you. It was Hades who stood by your side the entire time."
Aurora’s heart twisted painfully.
Her hands clenched into fists beneath the bedcovers, though Sophia didn’t notice as she continued speaking, oblivious to the shift in Aurora’s mood.
"Hades followed the ambulance. He stayed with you the whole time, with the paramedics, making sure you were taken care of. Not once did he leave your side."
As Sophia spoke, Aurora’s mind drifted to a faint, blurred memory.
She could almost recall Lucas sitting by her side, his hand wrapped around hers, dismissing Julia on the phone.
His voice had been calm, caring—focused entirely on her.
But now, as she listened to Sophia’s words, doubt crept in.
Was that memory even real?
Aurora inwardly scoffed at herself.
Of course, it wasn’t.
Lucas hadn’t come to see her, hadn’t cared enough to check on her after the accident.
Why would he?
"It was probably just a dream," Aurora thought bitterly, her heart sinking. "A dream that will never come true."
She felt a deep, mocking laugh inside her chest.
How foolish had she been to think that Lucas might actually love her?
To imagine that he’d care for her the way she hoped?
The memory—whether real or imagined—faded like a wisp of smoke, leaving her with nothing but the cold reality that Lucas hadn’t been there for her.
She sighed softly, forcing a small smile onto her face to hide the disappointment swirling within. "I guess it’s good I had Hades by my side then," she said, her voice steady, not betraying the weight of her thoughts.
Sophia smiled in return, unaware of the silent storm raging within Aurora. "Exactly. You’re lucky to have someone like Hades looking out for you."
Aurora slowly released her clenched fists under the blanket, trying to push away the heaviness lingering in her heart.
She looked at Sophia with a genuine smile, though her emotions remained carefully tucked away.
"Thank you for being here too, Sophia," Aurora said softly, her voice filled with appreciation. "And for everything you’ve done. I don’t know how I would’ve gotten through this without you. I’ll make sure to thank Hades later too—he’s always been a good brother to me."
Sophia returned her smile, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. "What are friends for?" she replied, her voice light but strained.
Aurora didn’t notice the slight tremor, distracted by her own thoughts.
A brief silence hung between them before Sophia glanced around the room.
"I’m going to use the restroom real quick," she said, standing up and brushing her hair back with a nervous hand.
Aurora nodded. "Of course, take your time."
With that, Sophia walked away.
As soon as Sophia stepped out of Aurora’s ward and closed the door behind her, her composure crumbled.
She bit down hard on her lower lip, holding back the tears that welled up in her eyes until she could no longer.
Sophia hurried toward the nearest restroom, slipping inside and locking the door behind her.
Once alone, she leaned against the sink and finally let the sobs break free.
Tears streamed down her face as guilt overwhelmed her.
She had lied to Aurora, her best friend—someone she loved like a sister.
She had twisted the truth to protect Hades, to keep Aurora in the dark about Lucas marking her.
She gripped the edge of the sink tightly, her shoulders shaking as the weight of her deceit hit her.
"How could I have done this to Aurora?"
The question echoed in her mind, but there were no answers, only the crushing guilt she carried alone.
