Chapter 48: Overnight
Chapter 48: Overnight
Morning sunlight filtered through the hospital blinds, casting a soft glow over the room as Aurora sat upright in her bed.
Her hand was connected to an IV drip, but her focus was on the television in front of her.
The screen displayed a news segment about the movie she had acted in, the one that had catapulted her to stardom.
Aurora gently rubbed her belly, a smile forming on her lips.
She was happy—not just with the success of the film, but also with the award she had won.
The prestigious Academy Award for Best Main Actress now felt like a distant, dreamlike accomplishment, yet the joy of it lingered.
Her mind drifted back to the night after the Academy Awards ceremony.
She had been on top of the world, the award in her hands, the applause still ringing in her ears.
After the ceremony ended, she had told Ava, her assistant, that she could head home.
Ava had done just that, leaving Aurora to bask in the glow of her victory.
Aurora had spoken briefly with Hades, exchanging a few words before she decided to drive home.
She had walked to her SUV, her heart light, and sat in the driver’s seat, still admiring the award she had worked so hard for.
But as she sat there, something had shifted.
Aurora recalled it vividly now.
She had been admiring the gleam of the award when she noticed the high beams of a headlight through her windshield.
At first, she thought nothing of it.
"Maybe it was just another car passing by," she had told herself. But the light grew brighter, more intense.
She looked up, and to her shock, a truck was speeding toward her.
Her heart raced as she realized the truck wasn’t going to stop.
She tried to move—tried to open her door and run, but the blinding light from the truck’s headlights froze her in place.
They blinked rapidly, disorienting her, making it impossible to think straight.
Her body refused to cooperate, and in that paralyzing moment, the truck slammed into her SUV.
Back in the hospital bed, Aurora winced, the memory of the crash flashing through her mind like a nightmare.
She felt a familiar pain in her head, the same sharp ache she’d experienced right after the accident.
Her hand instinctively reached up to hold her temple as the headache grew more intense, pounding like a drumbeat inside her skull.
Slowly, she lay back down, her body curling slightly as the pain overwhelmed her.
Tears slipped from the corners of her eyes, soaking her brows as she tried to breathe through the agony.
The television continued to play in the background, its soft noise only worsening the ache.
Aurora groaned softly and reached for the remote, her fingers fumbling with it before she finally turned the TV off.
The silence was a relief.
As the noise disappeared, so did the headache, fading little by little until the pain was gone completely.
Aurora lay there, her eyes closed, breathing deeply as the tears dried on her face.
For a while, she remained like that, resting in the quiet room.
But then, the sound of the door creaking open pulled her back to the present.
Aurora slowly sat up, her eyes flicking to the door.
She expected to see Lucas walk in, remembering how he had been with her last night, holding her hand, his presence comforting.
But when the door fully opened, it wasn’t Lucas standing there.
Aurora felt a slight pang of disappointment.
Although she was disappointed, the disappointment was quickly replaced by warmth as she saw Sophia.
She smiled at the sight of her best friend.
"Sophia," she said softly, her voice hoarse but filled with affection.
Sophia walked inside, closing the door gently behind her.
"Morning, sunshine," she greeted with her usual casual warmth, her voice light as she approached the bed.
Aurora’s smile widened at the familiar greeting. She glanced at Sophia, taking in her appearance—a long-sleeved jacket and a scarf wrapped snugly around her neck.
In Sophia’s hands were two reusable bags, looking like they held something delicious.
"Why are you all bundled up like it’s winter?" Aurora asked, eyeing her friend’s outfit with curiosity.
Sophia shrugged, setting the bags down on the over-bed table. "It’s freezing outside. You know how the weather gets around here—never predictable," she replied, her tone playful as she removed a couple of containers from the bags.
Aurora sniffed the air, and an unmistakable scent hit her senses.
Her eyes lit up as the comforting aroma of overnight oats wafted through the room.
The smell of oats mixed with fresh fruit and a hint of nuts instantly brought warmth to her mood. "Is that—"
"Overnight oats," Sophia said, grinning as she placed the containers carefully on the table. "I had a feeling you’d be craving these this morning."
"You know me too well," Aurora said with a happy sigh, her smile growing as she watched Sophia move around with a familiarity that only came from years of friendship.
Sophia washed her hands before handling the food, then opened the containers and began setting up the small meal.
She adjusted the over-bed table, positioning it comfortably in front of Aurora, and helped her sit up a bit more by fluffing the pillows behind her back.
Aurora smiled gratefully as Sophia served the food, her movements easy and precise.
Sophia carefully laid out a bowl of overnight oats, topped with slices of berries, chunks of apple, and a generous sprinkle of nuts.
She placed a bottle of water beside it and handed Aurora a spoon she had pulled from the bag.
"Here you go," Sophia said, offering the spoon with a smile. "Eat up."
"Thanks," Aurora replied, taking the spoon from her and dipping it into the bowl.
The first bite of oats hit her tongue, and a wave of relief washed over her.
The creamy oats, paired with the freshness of the fruit and the crunch of the nuts, made for a perfect combination.
It tasted like comfort and nourishment in a way that she hadn’t realized she needed.
Aurora’s movements were quick as she ate, clearly enjoying the food, but she tried to maintain a bit of composure, mindful not to seem too eager despite her hunger.
She was failing, though.
She could feel her stomach’s gratitude with every bite, her body urging her to keep going.
Sophia watched her, amusement playing on her face as she chuckled.
"Don’t hold back," Sophia teased, leaning back in her chair. "Just go for it. You’ve earned it."
Aurora glanced at her, spoon still in her mouth, and tried to suppress a smile as she continued eating.
She knew she was devouring the oats faster than usual, but the craving was undeniable.
Noticing Sophia’s gaze, Aurora paused between bites and offered an explanation with a playful shrug. "Normally, I don’t eat this much," she said, glancing down at the bowl. "But... you know, there are two pups plus me eating now."
Sophia’s eyes widened in mock surprise, then she burst out laughing. "Oh, is that so?" she asked, her tone light with amusement.
Aurora shot her a playful glare, her mouth still half-full of oats, making her expression all the more ridiculous.
Sophia’s laughter softened as she watched her friend, her eyes sparkling with joy at seeing Aurora in better spirits.
Then, Aurora blushed.
The blush that crept up Aurora’s cheeks wasn’t just from the teasing. She was happy—truly, deeply happy.
Grateful to be alive, to be sitting here with Sophia, and most of all, for the two lives growing inside her.
