Chapter 112: Heavy Traffic

The council chamber buzzed with murmurs and shifting bodies as attendees settled in, filling every seat and corner of the grand hall.

Aurora entered quietly, her gaze sweeping the crowded room.

She had been delayed by the heavy morning traffic, leaving her with barely enough time to slip in unnoticed before the meeting began.

As she scanned the hall for an empty seat, her eyes found Lucas sitting toward the front, his wheelchair angled slightly to allow him a clear view of the podium.

Gabriel was seated beside him, his posture attentive, as he observed the gathering crowd.

Just as Gabriel casually looked over his shoulder, he caught sight of Aurora, still standing in search of a seat.

Gabriel leaned toward Lucas.

"Sir, Ms. Grey is here," he murmured.

Lucas raised an eyebrow, visibly surprised.

He hadn’t expected her presence today, given that she’d mentioned having some last-minute responsibilities on set.

He followed Gabriel’s gaze and saw her near the door, scanning the rows of seats.

She looked a little lost amidst the crowd, her eyes darting from one side of the room to the other.

Lucas turned back to Gabriel.

"She should sit here," he said, his voice quiet but insistent. "She’ll get a good view from here."

Gabriel hesitated, glancing down at the seat he was occupying.

"But... there aren’t any seats left here," he replied uncertainly.

Lucas shot him a quick look, one eyebrow raised.

Gabriel caught on almost instantly, straightening. "Right... of course, sir."

As Gabriel started to stand, Aurora heard a hoarse voice beside her.

"You can sit here," the man said.

Surprised, she looked down to find a man in a dark cap sitting a few rows back, his face partially obscured by the cap’s shadow.

He was already lifting a small bag from the seat next to him, clearing a spot for her.

Aurora offered him a grateful smile, relieved to have found a seat so close to the front.

"Thank you," she said politely as she slipped into the offered chair.

The man merely nodded, his tone soft. "No problem."

At the front, Gabriel finished rising, only to notice that Aurora had already found a seat.

He glanced at Lucas, who had also turned to look back and had noticed Aurora sitting comfortably beside the mysterious man in the cap.

Just then, a respected Elder approached the podium at the front of the chamber, his presence drawing everyone’s attention.

The murmuring in the room gradually quieted as the Elder raised his hand in a universal gesture of greeting.

"Good morning, everyone," he began, his voice carrying a warmth that commanded respect and focus. "Thank you for gathering here today. It is an honor to see such unity and strength among our people."

His greeting brought the chamber to a complete hush, and all eyes turned to the front.

The Elder continued, "Today’s council session will address the transition of leadership for Grey’s pack, the selection of new ranks within the pack’s hierarchy, and, perhaps most notably, the consideration of a new Alpha King." His voice was calm, yet steady, underscoring the significance of the occasion.

"As in our tradition, we will cast votes for these open ranks," he went on, "beginning with the position of Alpha for Grey’s pack and progressing to other influential roles."

Just then, the heavy double doors swung open, drawing everyone’s attention.

A murmur ran through the crowd as a group of men strode into the chamber, each radiating a formidable presence.

Aurora’s ears picked up the whispers around her:

"Aren’t those the sons of the ex-Alpha of Grey’s pack?"

"Yes, I heard they’d be here today."

"Look, that’s Finn and Urius... and Hades too."

The man with the dark cap beside Aurora seemed to hear these whispers as well.

Beneath the brim, his mouth curved into a silent sneer.

Aurora caught the expression out of the corner of her eye, but he was quick to hide it, and none of the other council members seemed to notice.

The whispers around her grew louder, and Aurora felt an urge to turn around, curiosity getting the better of her.

As she looked back, her heart skipped a beat.

There, striding into the room like a force of nature, were her brothers—Finn, Urius, Dan, Hades, and the others, each flanked by several imposing guards.

The guards, strong and silent, remained stationed at the door as her brothers made their way into the council chamber, heading for the front row.

Her eyes softened as she took in their familiar faces.

They’d each grown in strength and stature since she last saw them, and though their demeanors varied, she felt a wave of nostalgia and warmth.

However, her heart sank a bit as they passed her without so much as a glance.

Not a single one of them acknowledged her presence.

When Hades passed by, he brushed his arm against her shoulder, the motion too deliberate to be an accident.

Aurora hissed softly, feeling the irritation flare up.

"Of course," she thought to herself. "Hades would pull something like that. I should have expected it."

Despite the brush-off from her brothers, she watched them settle into the front row seats with mixed feelings of pride and longing.

Her gaze lingered on Finn and Urius, whom she’d once been closest to, while a flicker of sadness passed over her expression.

She’d hoped for a warmer reunion, but it seemed today wasn’t the day.

In the front row, the Betas and Gammas who had been seated rose automatically, making way for the six Grey brothers.

They straightened their postures and slid to the side, showing silent courtesy to the former Alpha’s sons.

Finn and Urius took seats without fanfare, their expressions neutral as they waited for the Elder to resume.

The Elder’s gaze swept over the assembly, his eyes landing briefly on the six men in the front before he cleared his throat, prepared to continue. "As we move forward with today’s agenda, we will first call upon those who are nominating themselves or others for the vacant positions within Grey’s pack..."

From the sidelines, Lucas observed the brothers with a guarded expression, his face unreadable.

When he looked over to Aurora, though, his gaze softened just a little, as if sharing in her momentary disappointment.

Gabriel leaned in slightly, a question in his eyes, but Lucas shook his head, indicating he didn’t need anything.
