Chapter 111: His Memories
Chapter 111: His Memories
The afternoon light cast a soft glow over the city, filtering through the tinted windows of Lucas’s sleek black car as it navigated toward Aurora’s mansion.
Gabriel, ever attentive in the driver’s seat, kept his focus on the road, though his eyes flickered to the rearview mirror now and then, watching his boss and Aurora, sensing that this was one of those rare, quiet moments for Lucas.
In the back seat, Lucas glanced down at his tablet, scrolling through the afternoon’s headlines.
His eyes moved steadily across the screen, absorbing the news, though it was clear his thoughts were elsewhere.
After a few minutes, he looked over at Aurora, breaking the silence.
"You know, tomorrow the council’s convening," he said. "They’ll be discussing the transition of leadership for Grey’s pack, along with... some newly open positions within the ranks."
Aurora raised her eyebrows, not quite expecting the conversation to veer in that direction.
"Oh?" she replied, her tone cautious.
He nodded, keeping his gaze on his screen but occasionally glancing her way. "The Alpha of Alphas position is up for consideration, too. Have you given any thought to joining one of those ranks?"
Aurora blinked, her mouth parting in surprise.
"I... hadn’t really thought about it," she admitted. "I just got back, and managing the pack I already have is a lot on its own."
She glanced at him with a small smile. "Taking on the Alpha King role? That seems... well, ambitious. I wouldn’t even know where to start."
Lucas looked up, his mouth curving in a slight smile. "What about me, then? Are you saying I should go for it, Miss Grey?"
The formal tone made her laugh, and she tilted her head at him. "Mr. Lucas, are you interested?"
He shook his head, chuckling. "Aurora, I thought we agreed on Lucas, not Mr. Lucas."
She gave him a small smile and corrected herself, her tone softer this time. "Right... Lucas. So, are you interested in the rank, Lucas?"
He gave a faint shrug, his expression contemplative. "I’m not entirely sure. But I do know that your brothers’ influence can’t be ignored. And once they hear about your father’s trial, they’re likely to appear soon enough, each one of them eager for... wealth, power, high-ranking positions."
At the mention of her brothers, a distant look passed over Aurora’s face.
Her thoughts drifted to her five brothers—Finn, Urius, Dan, and the others.
Memories of their childhood together flickered in her mind.
Though some had retained their charm, like Finn and Urius, Hades had taken a darker path, bringing trouble to Aurora through his involvement with Sophia.
She sighed, her gaze distant.
"They’ll all be there," she said quietly. "Including my step-mom, Elizabeth Grey, and... my mom." Her voice softened as she mentioned her mother, a hint of sadness mixed with warmth.
A flicker of emotion crossed Lucas’s face, and his gaze dropped for a moment before he shook it off.
"Actually," he said, his tone casual, though he was watching her intently. "Mrs. Hayden mentioned that you’ve been asking about my grandmother... Nana Rossi."
Aurora’s eyes widened slightly, and she tried to hide her surprise.
She hadn’t expected Mrs. Hayden to share that particular detail.
She nodded slowly.
"That’s true," she murmured. "Mrs. Hayden mentioned Nana Rossi was in a retirement home."
Lucas raised an eyebrow, curiosity lighting his eyes.
"Nana Rossi?" he repeated. "Only family members and close relatives call her that, you know. But you sounded so... sure when you said it, like you’ve known her for a long time. Are you close to her?"
Aurora felt her breath catch, realizing she’d let something slip.
She’d kept her distance from Lucas, using formalities like "Mr. Lucas" as a shield, a way of pretending there was no history between them, no deep connection.
And yet, here she was, slipping up by calling his grandmother "Nana Rossi."
She hesitated, glancing out the window, unsure how to respond.
"I guess it... felt natural," she said finally, her voice soft.
Lucas studied her for a moment, and a gentle smile crossed his face.
"It’s fine," he said, his tone reassuring. "Actually, since you’ve been asking Mrs. Hayden about her health so often, maybe someday... you’d like to visit her with me. At the retirement home."
A weight lifted from Aurora’s shoulders, and a smile bloomed on her face.
The thought of finally seeing Nana Rossi, of being able to talk to her face-to-face, filled her with an unexpected joy.
She’d wanted to meet her for so long, to reconnect with a woman she’d admired deeply.
"I’d like that," she replied softly, her eyes bright. "Thank you."
Lucas’s lips quirked into a smirk as he looked back down at his tablet. "We could bring the kids with us," he added casually.
Aurora frowned, slightly taken aback. "The kids?"
Lucas’s gaze remained on the screen, but his voice was light. "Yes. Leo, Aria, and Caleb. They’d want to see her, I think."
She looked at him, feeling a strange sensation, as if something significant was happening that she couldn’t quite grasp.
Why was he talking about the kids so naturally?
It sounded as if... well, as if he were remembering.
Her eyes searched his face, studying him as he read, his brow occasionally furrowing at something on the screen.
She wondered, Is he remembering his memories?
The thought sent a shiver through her, and she realized she was holding her breath.
Lucas must have sensed her gaze because he glanced up, his expression unreadable.
But as their eyes met, a small smile curved on his lips—a secretive, knowing smile that hinted at things unspoken.
The car came to a slow stop outside her mansion, but neither of them moved.
The silence was comfortable, and for a moment, it felt as though nothing else existed but the two of them, sharing a quiet afternoon, their thoughts filled with people they cared about.
Gabriel’s voice interrupted the silence. "We’re here, Ms. Grey."
Aurora blinked, pulling herself back to the present, and gave Lucas a final smile.
"Thank you... Lucas," she said, her tone carrying more meaning than the simple words.
He nodded, his gaze soft. "Anytime, Aurora."
