Chapter 91: Accidental Spill.
Lost in her thoughts and distracted by Lucas, Olive accidentally added too much acid to the mixture, causing it to bubble over and splash onto the equipment. The apparatus began to shake and eventually broke apart, sending glass and metal shards flying everywhere.
The lab fell silent, with all eyes on Olive and the wreckage before her.
"Olive, what are you doing?" Lucas asked, his voice barely above a whisper but loud enough for Olive to hear. He grabbed a towel to contain the spill. "Thank goodness you aren’t hurt!" he added, his voice filled with concern as he turned Olive around.
"I...I’m sorry," Olive stammered, her face flushing with embarrassment.
"Are you okay, dude?" Henry chimed in with a worried expression.
"You should be careful. Who doesn’t concentrate during chemistry practicals? What if you’re dealing with a strong acid? Do you have a death wish?" Mark expressed, his voice tinged with anger as he glared at Olive.
"Hey! Calm down. Why are you getting so worked up?" Aiden chimed in, looking puzzled.
"Am I?" Mark inquired, raising his eyebrows in curiosity. His friends responded with a frustrated sigh.
The principal, Mrs. George, approached their workstation. "What’s happening here? Why is there a spill? Lucas, are you okay? Are you hurt?" she asked, her voice serious as she checked on Lucas.
"I’m fine, Mom. Thank goodness for the goggles. And the spill was my fault, Mom. I wasn’t paying attention," Lucas quickly admitted.
Mrs. George turned to Olive. "No, it was your partner’s mistake. Arthur, you need to focus and follow instructions. You’re on a scholarship and can’t afford to pay for damages. Be more careful from now on. This carelessness will cost you points."
"Mom, is that really necessary?" Lucas questioned, looking at Mrs. George.
"I’m just stating the facts. He needs to understand the consequences of his actions. He can’t afford to make mistakes," Mrs. George replied with a smile, but her words felt like a warning to Olive, who nervously watched her walk away.
Olive felt guilty and remorseful. She knew she had messed up, and now Lucas was taking the blame for her mistake.
"I’m sorry, Olive," Lucas said, his tone filled with concern.
"It’s okay. I’m fine!" Olive replied with a smile. "And I’m sorry too," she added, as Lucas nodded and returned his focus to the experiment.
As they continued with the experiment, Olive’s hands shook, and she found it hard to concentrate. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she had ruined everything - the experiment, and possibly even her scholarship, given the way Mrs. George had spoken to her as if they had a history of animosity.
The lab equipment loomed over her, a constant reminder of her mistake. The sounds of bubbling flasks and clanging equipment now seemed like a chaotic symphony, mirroring her inner turmoil.
The practical session soon ended, and Olive hurriedly made her way out, with Lucas following closely behind.
"What were you thinking? You could have been injured," Lucas scolded, frustration evident in his voice as he caught up with Olive by her locker.
"Why do you care?" Olive asked, her eyes fixed on her locker, though her words were aimed at Lucas. "You shouldn’t be concerned about me."
"You’re so...so...,"
"So what?" Olive interjected, cutting Lucas short.
Instead of replying, Lucas grabbed her arms, dragging her with him until they reached the dorm and locked the door behind them.
"What’s wrong?" Olive asked, her eyes locked with Lucas who remained silent but instead grabbed the first aid box and led Olive to his bed.
"You’re so stubborn, foolish, insane..."
"What’s with the insults?" Olive asked with an expression mixed with anger as she glared at Lucas, who soon placed a cotton wool dripped in methylated spirit on her hand, making her groan in pain.
"You better shut your mouth before I dip the cotton wool into it," Lucas threatened, making Olive keep quiet as she swallowed hard. "You were injured and you didn’t even say so, but instead you continued with the practical, not minding the cut wound in your hand. If you aren’t foolish and stupid, then what are you?" He added as he raised his gaze to meet Olive’s.
Olive’s eyes widened in surprise from the stinging pain and Lucas’s harsh words. She attempted to pull her hand away, but Lucas maintained a gentle yet firm grip.
"I...I didn’t notice," Olive stammered, feeling a mix of embarrassment and defensiveness.
Lucas’s expression softened, his eyes filled with concern. "That’s exactly my point. You were too distracted, too caught up in your own thoughts. You need to be more aware of your surroundings, of yourself."
Olive looked away, feeling a lump form in her throat. She knew Lucas was right, but it hurt to hear it from him.
"Hey," Lucas said, his voice gentler now. "I’m sorry if I was too harsh. I just don’t want to see you get hurt, okay?"
Olive nodded, still looking away. Lucas released her hand, but instead of moving away, he sat down beside her on the bed.
"I’m also sorry about my mom. I don’t know what got into her this afternoon to say that to you," Lucas apologized, his voice sincere.
"It’s fine. She’s right though. I can’t afford those lab apparatus yet I broke it," Olive replied, her face downcast. Lucas soon raised her chin with his finger, locking gaze with her.
"Please don’t say that. Never underestimate yourself, no matter what." Lucas said, his voice gentle and soothing. "I know I’ve been a jerk in the past, but I’ve changed now. I don’t want to see you hurt."
’Is he going to kiss me again?’ Olive wondered, feeling nervous as she stood up from the bed and moved away from Lucas.
"It’s okay. Let’s go have lunch. I missed breakfast this morning and I can’t skip lunch." Olive said with a smile, while Lucas nodded, still looking surprised at Olive’s strange behavior.
"Let’s go then." Lucas said as he stood up and led Olive out of the dorm.
___________
In an office exuding opulence, a lavish sanctuary nestled in the heart of the esteemed academy. Polished mahogany panels lined the walls, adorned with gleaming silver accents and floor-to-ceiling windows that framed breathtaking views of the manicured grounds. A majestic desk, crafted from a single slab of rich, dark wood, commanded the room, complemented by a plush, high-backed leather chair where a woman with short black styled hair, dressed in a black fitted Chanel suit sat.
Soft, golden light spilled from crystal chandeliers, casting a warm glow on the rich, velvety carpet and the rows of sleek, modern bookshelves. The air was alive with the scent of fine leather and the whispered promise of excellence. The walls were adorned with an impressive collection of artwork, each piece carefully curated to reflect the school’s commitment to refinement and sophistication.
"What’s going on between that kid and my son? When did Lucas start forming relationships with those scholarship students? I thought he hated them and was even against accepting students on scholarship," Mrs. George said, her expression angry.
"From what I heard, that kid Arthur kind of changed Lucas. He stopped him from bullying and all sorts of atrocities," Clara replied, seated before Mrs. George. "Isn’t this the kind of change we wanted to see? Lucas seems happy again." She added as she rolled her eyes.
"He started to change his way when Arthur arrived at this school. Why didn’t he change when Mark and Aiden were still persuading him to." Mrs George remarked with a smirk. "The way Lucas took the blame for that kid at the chemistry lab, the way he looked at him with worry and concern, the way he took a bullet for him. What kind of relationship do they both share?" She wondered , and stood up from the chair, pacing back and forth.
"You think too much mom. Just what are you implying now." Clara asked with a smirk. " Just leave the kids alone. Let them enjoy their friendship in peace."
"I know what I’m saying Clara. Lucas can’t even take a bullet for me his mother, why then did he take a bullet for that kid? Lucas is afraid of pain more than anything but when it comes to that kid, he played a superhero? What the hell is wrong with his head?" Mrs George yelled, her body tensed up. "Is Lucas into boys?!"
"Damn! If I knew this was why you called me, then I wouldn’t have come to you at all. If you want someone to take a bullet for you, then go to your husband and leave this principal position for me." Clara remarked and rolled her eyes away in anger and soon got up from the chair and made her way out.
Mrs George let out a heavy sigh, her frustration evident on her face. She then grabbed her phone and dialed a number after which she placed her phone on her ear.
"Have you delivered my message to Switzerland?" Mrs George asked over the phone.
"Yes ma’am. Everything would be in place in two weeks time." The voice replied from the other line.
"I want everything to be done in a week. The students are going on vacation tomorrow hence I want everything to be done before they’re back from vacation." Mrs George voiced out, a smile dancing on her lips.
"Yes ma’am. I’ll do just that then. " The voice replied from the other line.
"Good! The start of a new era begins then." Mrs George said and then ended the call.
