Chapter 90: Shattered Equipment, Shattered Hearts.
Olive’s heart raced as Lucas’s lips met hers. She had longed for this moment, and as it unfolded, she felt herself melting into his embrace. The kiss started gently but quickly deepened, and Olive found herself lost in the sensation.
The morning sun gently entered the dorm, casting its warm rays on the sleepy faces of the students. The room filled with the sounds of beds creaking, occupants stirring, and birds chirping outside. Yawns, stretches, and whispers blended into a soothing morning symphony, signaling the start of a new day.
Olive and Lucas were still asleep on Olive’s bed, with Lucas wrapping his arm around her. As Lucas woke up, a smile lit up his face as he admired Olive’s sleeping beauty. "She’s so beautiful when she’s asleep," he whispered to himself as he gently touched her face.
Realizing they were running late, Lucas chuckled at the thought of Olive blaming him
for not waking her up on time for her bath. "Looks like we’ll both be using the 3RM today," he mused.
As Lucas looked at Olive’s peaceful expression, he felt a sense of calm wash over him. He gently moved a strand of hair from her face, his fingers tracing the curve of her cheekbone.
Olive woke up, her eyes meeting Lucas’s gaze.
"Oh my goodness!" Olive exclaimed, fear evident on her face. She quickly got out of bed, looking shocked. "Why are you in my bed?"
"Good morning," Lucas greeted with a smile.
"What’s good about the morning? How did you end up in my bed?" Olive questioned, raising her eyebrows in curiosity.
"Because I wanted to," Lucas replied, still smiling as he moved to his own bed.
"Because you wanted to?" Olive asked, her expression turning from anger to confusion as she searched for her phone. "What time is it?" she inquired, her voice etched with anger.
Lucas chuckled. "Late enough that we’ll be taking our baths at the 3RM today."
"You deliberately let me forget to set an alarm," Olive yelled, her body tensed in anger. "I hope you didn’t do anything to me last night."
"I just held you in my arms and admired your sleeping face," Lucas replied excitedly, but his words only fueled Olive’s anger.
"Just because we kissed doesn’t give you the right to sneak into my bed. Do you have no sense of boundaries?" Olive yelled, her nostrils flaring in anger.
"Did our kiss mean nothing to you?" Lucas asked, looking puzzled.
"What did you expect it to mean? Wasn’t it just a thank you for saving me?" Olive replied bluntly, swallowing hard.
She desired Lucas deeply, wanting their relationship to be more than just friends, but she knew they were not on the same level. Even if Lucas accepted her, others would not, and it would make her life a nightmare once they found out.
"Is that really what you believe? What if the reason I kissed you isn’t what you think? What if that kiss held significance for me?" Lucas questioned as he approached Olive.
"I can’t say what the kiss meant to you. But for me, it was simply a way of expressing gratitude for saving my life." Olive responded, avoiding eye contact with Lucas.
"Then why didn’t you resist when I initiated the kiss? Why did you respond and engage in it, touching me? Why did you put so much into that kiss if it meant nothing to you?" Lucas pressed, his anger evident as he stared at Olive. "Look at me and tell me the truth."
He lifted Olive’s chin with his finger, locking eyes with her, but she quickly looked away. He gently lifted her chin again, their eyes meeting once more.
"I did it because you asked for it. You wanted me to show my gratitude with a kiss, so I didn’t resist when you initiated it." Olive replied firmly. "Lucas, I don’t want to know what that kiss means to you. I don’t want to understand your thoughts. All I know is that we can only be friends, nothing more. Please erase any other ideas from your mind because a different kind of relationship between us is not possible."
"I agree that we’ve both shared kisses in the past, when you didn’t know I was female, but now that you know my real gender. We both shared kisses when you thought I was gay and you are. But those were just mistakes. Mistakes that we should put behind us. I don’t have any other feelings apart from friendship towards you, and you should do the same." Olive concluded.
Lucas’s expression changed, showing hurt and confusion. "Tell me then, if someone else had asked for a kiss as a form of gratitude, would you have done it?"
There was no reply from Olive as she was just staring at him. With a smirk, Lucas let go of her chin, stepping back as if he had been slapped.
"Okay," he said quietly. "If that’s how you feel, then I’ll forget about those moments. But remember, Olive - I’ve never felt this way about anyone before. It’s not just about the kiss or physical attraction. It’s about the connection."
Olive shook her head firmly. "I don’t want to hear it, Lucas. We’re friends, and that’s all we can be."
Lucas nodded, a bitter smile on his face. "Fine! We’re just friends. I was foolish to think you felt the same way about me. Let’s move on and pretend this never happened."
The tension between them was palpable as they both turned away, Lucas grabbing his bag and heading for the door.
As Lucas walked out of the dorm room, Olive felt a pang of guilt and regret. She knew she had hurt him deeply, and a part of her wished she could take back her words.
But she couldn’t. She had to protect herself, her heart, and her education. She couldn’t let the relationship between Lucas and her ruin her education, her future. She couldn’t risk anyone finding out about her relationship with Lucas, as that would mean her gender would be revealed and her scholarship would be over.
She took a deep breath and began to get ready for the day, trying to shake off the feeling of unease that had settled in her stomach.
"How am I supposed to have my bath now?" Olive murmured under her breath with a sad expression. "It’s a bad idea to go to the 3RM while Lucas is there."
She then walked over to the door and opened it slightly. "Should I quickly just have my bath before those students wake up? There’s still five minutes left after all," Olive thought to herself as she bit her lips desperately. "But five minutes can never be enough for a girl to get ready," she added, but her expression soon changed from sadness to determination. "But I’ll manage it!" She concluded and made her way out of her dorm.

Olive was soon done having her bath and back in her dorm before the other students woke up. She quickly began dressing up in her school uniform, finally ready for the day.
The sounds of the other students could be heard from the hallway by now, indicating that they were awake.
After applying a last touch of perfume, she made her way out of her dorm, joining the ocean of students in the hallway.
As Olive navigated through the crowded hallway, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of anxiety. She knew she would see Lucas again, and she wasn’t sure how to face him.
She quickly moved towards her locker, got her textbooks for the day, and headed to the chemistry laboratory immediately, deciding to skip breakfast.
As she entered the chemistry laboratory, she was immediately enveloped in a flurry of activity. Students were bustling about, setting up equipment and donning lab coats. The air was thick with the smell of chemicals and the hum of conversation.
She nervously made her way to her assigned workstation, her heart pounding with anticipation. She knew Lucas would be there, and she wasn’t sure how to face him.
As she began setting up her equipment, the door suddenly swung open and Lucas entered the room as well as Mark, Aiden and Henry. Lucas eyes briefly met Olive’s before he settled down beside her.
The principal, Mrs. George, entered the lab with a serious expression. "Alright, class. Today we’re conducting an experiment on the preparation of Hydrogen Gas. Please review the instructions and begin."
The lab buzzed with activity as students got to work. Olive tried to focus on the task at hand, pushing aside thoughts of her recent argument with Lucas.
Throughout the experiment, she stole glances at Lucas, who was deeply engrossed in his work. She couldn’t help but feel a sense of longing, wondering what could have been if she had been more honest about her feelings.
The lab was filled with the sounds of bubbling flasks and clanging equipment, but for Olive, the most significant sound was the silence between her and Lucas.
"Can you please focus on the experiment instead of staring at me? We’re a team, and I’ll hold you responsible if we fail this practical," Lucas said, his attention still on his work.
Lost in her thoughts and distracted by Lucas, Olive accidentally added too much acid to the mixture, causing it to bubble over and splash onto the equipment. The apparatus began to shake and eventually broke apart, sending glass and metal shards flying everywhere.
