Chapter 30: Party Day

The room fell silent, with Lucas, Mark, and Aiden at a loss for words, exchanging puzzled looks.

"Who are you picking up tomorrow?" Mrs. George repeated, settling into a chair.

"My girlfriend," Mark replied nervously. "Her father asked me to pick her up for a party. He doesn’t want her driving herself."

"Is this friend from Belmont too?" Mrs. George inquired, turning her attention to Lucas, who seemed irritated.

"Why are you so interested in my personal life? Is that why you’re here, to keep tabs on me?" Lucas snapped, glaring at Mrs. George.

"I’m your mother and I have the right to know everything going on with you," Mrs. George replied with a heavy sigh. "Everything going on with the three of you."

"Really?! You’re acting like my mother now? This new behavior of yours would have been helpful when my twin sister was alive. If you insist on knowing everything going on with us, she might still be alive," Lucas retorted.

"Lucas!!!" Mrs. George called out, her body tensing. "Watch your mouth, young man. You’re not the only one who cared about your sister; I cared about her too. You keep blaming me for her death, but what about your father? Why don’t you blame him as well?"

"Yeah, both of you! I sometimes wonder what sin I committed in my past life for God to give me you two as parents. It would have been better to be an orphan," Lucas said, only to receive a thunderous slap on his cheek from Mrs. George.

He could swear that he saw stars the moment the slap landed on his cheek. His ears were ringing like a whistling kettle, and he couldn’t hear anything around him for a moment.

"I told you to watch that tongue of yours," Mrs. George said through gritted teeth before storming out of the room.

"You shouldn’t have said that, Lucas," Aiden said, placing a hand on Lucas’s shoulder.

"I just couldn’t help it. Seeing her always brings back past memories," Lucas said, still holding his cheek. "I hate how she’s pretending to care. It would be better if she just went back to her old, uncaring self so I wouldn’t get angry."

"But what if she really does care about you, Lucas. She’s home now, but what about your father? He’s still on his business trip as usual, not even bothering to come home after the death of your twin sister," Mark said softly, also placing a hand on Lucas’s shoulder. "I believe your mother has realized her mistake and is trying to make things right with you."

"Fixing things with me wouldn’t bring back my twin sister, you know," Lucas replied with a heavy sigh. "And I can assure you, she’s just pretending. My parents only care about their jobs. I want them to feel the same pain I felt three years ago. I want them to feel scared that they’re about to lose me too. Maybe then they’ll realize their mistakes."

"You turned to bullying because you hoped the scholarship student would retaliate one day and hit you, putting you in a coma," Aiden said with a burst of laughter.

"Arthur was close to that. If only he had muscles and a short temper, you would have been in trouble," Mark added, joining in the laughter.

"It’s a wish that can never come true. I found the idea dumb from the start," Aiden said, shaking his head.

"Even if it’s not, I enjoy bullying those lowlifes. Isn’t the lunatic who got my sister pregnant a scholarship student too? That’s why my parents keep accepting scholarship students," Lucas said angrily. "Maybe if her two children are harmed by those lowlifes, she’ll stop accepting scholarship students.

"You’re just saying that because you’re still upset. Who would want to die?" Aiden said, swallowing hard. " The scholarship students won’t harm you. It might be time to make amends with your mother."

" I’ll consider it once I see that she and dad have truly changed. Then I’ll think about reconciling with them. Let’s put aside the family issues for now and focus on the party tomorrow," Lucas suggested, with Mark and Aiden agreeing to avoid upsetting him further.

The following day came quickly, with the sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling in the background. Olive go up very early and got dressed in a casual outfit of jean and top, attending to her school works and engaging in other fun activities waiting for night to come. At exactly 8:00pm, Olive got dressed in a black suit and white bow tie, adhering to the dress code specified in the invitation letter.

After putting her hair up in a bun and applying a final touch of perfume, she left her room and descended the stairs with a joyful expression on her face.

"Good evening!" greeted a familiar voice, which Olive recognized as Lucas. She looked up to see Lucas, Mark, and Lara dressed in white and black attire, sitting on the sofa with smiles on their faces.

"Why are you here?" Olive asked in surprise, quickly closing the distance between them.

"We’re here to take you to the party. And you look great in that suit!" Mark exclaimed enthusiastically.

Ignoring Mark’s comment, Olive approached Mr. and Mrs. Williams, who were busy attending to their own things not minding the teenagers.

"Why didn’t you tell me they were here?" she asked with a frown, but her question went unanswered.

"Are we going to the party or not?" Lucas interjected, rolling his eyes. "You’re really dragging this out."

"How do you know about the party?" Olive questioned, looking at Lara, who was wearing a black dress.

"Mark invited me," Lara replied, causing Olive’s eyes to widen in surprise as she moved closer to her, linking arms with her. "How did he get your number?" Olive whispered to Lara.

"I’ll tell you later, but we need to go now," Lara whispered back, both of them chuckling with excitement.

"Are you sure you’re just friends and not more?" Lucas asked, standing in front of Olive and Lara with a hand on his hip, showing his impatience.

"We’re best friends," Lara affirmed, still arm in arm with Olive, which seemed to unsettle Mark.

"Can we go already?" Mark demanded firmly. "Goodbye, Mr. and Mrs. Williams," he added with his voice laced with anger before leaving the room, leaving Lucas, Olive, and Lara behind.

"Have a great time, kids," Mrs. Williams said with a smile, though Olive’s frown remained. "We’ll come pick you up at exactly 10:00pm Olive ," she added as she watched the trio exit the room.
