Chapter 166: Have You Completely Lost Your Mind?!
The students turned in unison, their attention snapping toward the source of the familiar voice. Standing before them, poised yet stern, was Clara. Her serious expression was enough to silence any lingering chatter. Slowly, she settled into a chair, her every movement radiating purpose.
"She’ll be granted a scholarship," Clara began, her tone resolute. "The school will cover all her expenses. Once she gives birth, the George family will take care of her baby. This will allow Racheal to focus on her studies without distractions."
A hushed silence fell over the room, the weight of Clara’s words sinking in.
It was Annabella who broke the spell, her voice rising in a jubilant outburst. "Really, Clara? Thank you so much! Racheal will be so happy!" Her face glowed with joy as she rushed to Clara, throwing her arms around her in an uncharacteristically bold display of gratitude.
Clara stiffened, caught off guard by the sudden embrace, but she didn’t push Annabella away. Instead, she gave her a faint, almost reluctant pat on the back.
Lucas, watching from across, found himself frozen in disbelief. He knew Clara well or so he thought. Her strict, no-nonsense demeanor made this unexpected act of generosity feel almost surreal.
"Racheal can resume school tomorrow," Clara announced as she gently extracted herself from Annabella’s hold. She rose with her usual composure, smoothing out her skirt. "I have to leave now."
Without waiting for a reply, Clara turned and walked away, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor. The students remained silent, watching her retreating figure until the cafeteria door swung shut behind her.
It was Aiden who finally spoke, breaking the heavy quiet. "Your sister surprises me more and more each day," he said, his voice tinged with awe. His gaze darted to Lucas. "Like, seriously, Clara?"
"She gave a scholarship to a pregnant student," Mark added, his tone laced with disbelief. "Clara, who cares more about Belmont’s reputation than anything else. She’s risking gossip, people will talk about Belmont’s girls getting pregnant. What’s going on?"
"Maybe Clara’s turned over a new leaf," Aiden suggested, though his skeptical tone betrayed his uncertainty. "But your mom? She’s not going to let this slide. She’ll confront her for sure."
Lucas shrugged, leaning back in his chair with a nonchalant air. "Whatever. They can fight all they want, it’s none of my business." His dry chuckle broke the tension, drawing hesitant laughter from the group.
Annabella, her expression still glowing with gratitude, turned to Lucas. "Thank you so much, Lucas. And please, thank Clara for me too. Racheal will be thrilled to come back to school."
"You’ve thanked her already," Lucas replied bluntly. "She got the message. Just make sure you and your friend stay out of trouble from now on." His words carried a sharper edge than intended, and without waiting for a response, he stood abruptly. Grabbing Olive by the hand, he tugged her along, leaving the others staring after them in confused silence.
Once outside the cafeteria, Lucas finally released Olive’s hand. She whirled on him, her expression a mix of indignation and annoyance.
"What’s wrong with you?" she snapped, massaging her wrist. "Do you realize I’m a person and not some object you can drag around?"
Lucas held up his hands defensively, a sheepish smile tugging at his lips. "I’m sorry. Really. But I have a surprise for you."
Olive raised an eyebrow, her suspicion evident. "A surprise? Lucas, we’re in the middle of school hours. Exams are less than two weeks away! Have you completely lost your mind?"
"I know, I know," Lucas said quickly, his tone placating. "But trust me, it’ll be worth it. We’ll be back before you know it."
"No," Olive said firmly, crossing her arms. "I’m not interested. I need to study."
Before she could take another step, Lucas swept her off the ground and slung her over his shoulder as if she weighed nothing. Gasps and whispers erupted from the students in the hallway, their curious eyes following the spectacle.
"Lucas!" Olive hissed, her voice a harsh whisper. "Have you completely lost it? Everyone’s staring!"
"Yes, I’ve lost it," Lucas admitted with a mischievous grin. "And you’re the one driving me crazy."
Despite her protests and struggles, Lucas carried her out of the school building and deposited her gently into his car. The locks clicked, while the chauffeur resumed his position at the wheel and soon, the sleek black Mercedes-Benz pulled away from the school grounds, leaving the curious onlookers behind.
Fuming, Olive sat stiffly, her gaze fixed on the window. She watched the cityscape blur past, her arms crossed tightly over her chest.
"Are you planning to give me the silent treatment forever?" Lucas asked after a long moment, glancing at her sideways. "I said I’m sorry."
"I don’t want your apology," Olive shot back, her tone clipped. "If you were truly sorry, you wouldn’t have done it in the first place."
Lucas sighed "I just wanted to get us out of there for a bit. We’ve been through a lot. I thought we deserved to celebrate, just us."
Olive, still fuming with anger finally turned to face him "Is that the real reason? Or are you trying to distract yourself? Be honest, Lucas. You smiled when Clara announced the scholarship, but I could see the tension in your face. And with Annabella... you looked ready to snap."
Lucas let out a low chuckle, devoid of humor. "I can’t hide anything from you, can I? You’re right. Annabella and Racheal don’t deserve a second chance. They’re responsible for so much pain, Louise’s death, the old man’s death. They might not have done the actual killing concerning Louise death, but their betrayal set everything in motion. It’s hard to let that go."
Olive expression slightly softened as she rested her hand gently on his. "I get it. But we’ve done our part. We’ve uncovered the truth. Let the police handle the rest. Carrying this burden any longer won’t help anyone."
Lucas nodded reluctantly. "You’re right. But Annabella... there’s something about her. The way she looks at me, it’s unsettling. If she crosses a line, I’ll deal with her."
Olive chuckled softly, shaking her head. "She won’t. Just forget about them, Lucas. Focus on what matters. And talk to Clara. Her decision today, it didn’t feel like her. There’s more to it."
"I’m glad you’re able to notice that as well as Mark, Aiden and Lara. And I will definitely talt to Clara," Lucas promised, his jaw tightening. "Something about her actions doesn’t sit right at all."
The car came to a smooth stop in front of an extravagant building. Olive blinked as she turned her gaze to the widow to take in the view, her eyes widening as she read the sign: Belmont Hotel.
"A hotel?!" she exclaimed, rounding on Lucas with an incredulous glare. "Have you completely lost your mind?"
