Chapter 100: Fading Light, New Dawn.
As the first light of dawn crept over the horizon, the world awakened from its slumber, bathed in a soft, ethereal glow. The sky transformed into a kaleidoscope of pastel hues—a gentle blend of rose, amber, and lavender—like delicate brushstrokes on a masterpiece. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers and the distant chirping of birds, their melodies intertwining in a joyful symphony.
Olive, already dressed in trousers and a blue T-shirt, stood in her room, the soft carpet beneath her feet. She was still busy arranging her travel bag, the sound of zippers and rustling clothes filling the air. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafted from the kitchen, enticing her senses.
*Knock, knock, knock.*
"Yes, who’s there?" Olive called out, her gaze fixed on the door.
Lara entered, dressed in a floral red gown, the fabric rustling softly as she moved. She shut the door behind her and approached Olive, the scent of her perfume—jasmine and vanilla—lingering in the air.
"Everyone’s downstairs. We decided to skip breakfast. How come you’re still packing?" Lara asked, settling on the bed and starting to help Olive fold her clothes. The softness of the bedspread and the gentle touch of Lara’s hands on the fabric created a sense of comfort.
"I was just too tired last night," Olive replied, trying to muster a smile. The fatigue still lingered in her voice.
"I know you were upset because of Lucas," Lara said knowingly, a small smile playing on her lips. "It’s hard when things are tense between you two. But I get it."
"I’m fine now," Olive insisted, folding the last piece of clothing and zipping up her bag. "Honestly, it’s a good thing we decided to cut the vacation short. I can finally focus on schoolwork."
Lara sighed, giving Olive a skeptical look. "Focus on schoolwork? I doubt it. You and Lucas will be seeing each other every day. You’re in the same class, and you share the same dorm, remember? Unless, of course, Lucas decides to attend only the special classes with the 3RM."
"I know. I hope he decides to move out of the dorm and start attending the 3RM special classes," Olive replied with a heavy sigh. "All done!" she announced, forcing a smile. "Let’s not keep the others waiting."
Lara nodded, and the two of them left the room, heading out of the villa to join the others already waiting by the car.
As soon as they spotted Olive and Lara, everyone got into the cars without a word, their minds set on reaching school early. Lucas and Olive ended up sitting together, while the chauffeur took his place at the wheel. Lara and Mark shared the same car, while Henry and Aiden, who wasn’t keen on talking to Olive, sat together in another.
The cars glided smoothly out of the villa and onto the tiled street. The group fell into a comfortable silence, each lost in their own thoughts. Olive gazed out the window, watching the scenery blur by, her mind still reeling from the events of the past few days. Beside her, Lucas stared straight ahead, his expression unreadable.
Olive’s thoughts drifted to Lucas’s chest wound, and a worried expression crossed her face. *I didn’t even ask how his gunshot wound is healing. I hope it didn’t reopen when he swam to save me,* she thought, biting her lip anxiously. She wanted to ask him about it but couldn’t bring herself to.
The chauffeur’s voice broke the silence. "We’re approaching the airfield, sir."
"Okay," Lucas responded, his voice clear and steady.
The cars turned onto a private road, leading them to a sleek, silver jet waiting on the tarmac. The group filed out of the cars, their luggage handled by the waiting staff.
They boarded the jet immediately, and the flight was short. Soon, they were landing at the airport. The group disembarked, their luggage once again whisked away by the staff.
"All right, let’s get moving," Mark said, leading the group to the waiting cars. He turned to Lara, his voice softening. "I’m going to miss you, dear."
"I’ll miss you too," Lara replied with a smile. "Let’s keep in touch with video calls and phone calls, okay?" She hugged him tightly.
"Stop oppressing the single people!" Henry joked, prompting laughter from the group.
"You should get a girlfriend, then," Mark shot back, grinning. Without warning, he planted a kiss on Lara’s lips, making the group gasp in surprise.
"First kiss, huh?" Henry muttered under his breath, his eyes glued to the couple, who seemed oblivious to everything but each other.
"I didn’t think to ask Lara about it," Olive thought, a smile playing on her lips as she watched them.
Lucas caught Olive’s eye, but she quickly looked away, focusing on her shoes as if they were suddenly the most interesting thing in the world.
Lucas cleared his throat, breaking the lovers’ trance. "That’s enough. You can save the rest for later."
"Yes, please," Henry added, folding his arms. "Go book a room or something." He burst out laughing.
"Goodbye, Lara. We’ll see each other soon," Olive said, stepping forward to hug Lara tightly. "I’ll miss you, Pookie."
"I’ll miss you too," Lara replied, her voice soft. "Please, don’t be sad. If you ever need someone to talk to, you know I’m just a call away." Olive nodded in response.
"You’re hugging someone else’s girlfriend awfully tight," Aiden interjected with a look of disdain. "Are you sure there’s nothing going on between you two?"
"Drop it, Aiden. I’m not worried," Mark said calmly. "Arthur and Lara are friends, so it’s only natural they’d say their goodbyes."
Aiden shot Mark an incredulous look but stayed silent.
"Aiden, there’s nothing going on between—" Lara began, but Aiden cut her off.
"No need to explain yourself, young lady. Save your breath."
Lara’s expression darkened, but Mark quickly took her hand. "I believe you, babe. Just ignore Aiden. He’s always been a pain. Goat!" Mark added with a grin.
"Nice one," Aiden scoffed, his face contorted in shock. "You’re calling me a goat over her?" His anger simmered as he glared at Lara and Mark, but they ignored him. "Fine!" Aiden spat, storming off to the Bugatti.
Olive, Lucas, Mark, and Henry then climbed into the Bugatti, which would take them back to Belmont High School, while Lara got into a Honda Pilot, heading to her own destination.
The cars pulled away from the airport, winding their way through the streets toward Belmont High. As they neared the familiar buildings, Olive felt a sense of unease settle in her stomach.
After several minutes, the car pulled up to the school entrance, and the group stepped out, their luggage once again handled by staff.
The sudden change in the school environment sent a wave of unease and shock down the spines of the group. Their mouths dropped open, eyes wide in surprise as they took in their surroundings.
"What’s going on here? Are we at the wrong school?" Olive asked, looking around in confusion at the girls dressed in short green skirts and shirts, school bags slung over their shoulders as they walked back and forth.
"No way this is true. I must be dreaming," Mark muttered, his eyes wide in shock.
"Yes, way. You’re not dreaming, man," Aiden chimed in with a burst of laughter. "What a surprise to come back to."
"Mother is unbelievable," Lucas said, shaking his head in disbelief. "No wonder she insisted we go on vacation. She had this planned all along."
Henry smirked, folding his arms over his chest. "Belmont’s a mixed school again."
