Chapter 97 The Unattainable Confirmed
Next day at noon.
Just as Jiang An was preparing to go to the cafeteria, she ran into two familiar nurses who were also heading there for lunch. They warmly grabbed her arm: "Jiang An, come and eat with us!"
The two nurses in front of her had taken care of her mother when Fang Qing was gravely ill. Probably because Jiang An used to stay at the hospital to keep her mother company, she had grown somewhat close to them. Fang Qing’s sudden death had also left a profound impression on the department, so they were a bit excited to see Jiang An coming as an intern.
"I was just telling Xiao Ning that you might come to intern here with us, and here you are!" One of the nurses, named Xiao Liu, grabbed Jiang An and said with a smile.
Both were slightly older than Jiang An, and they got along quite well with her back when she took care of her mother in the hospital.
"With your excellent grades, our hospital is definitely the top choice!" Nurse Xiao Ning, walking ahead of the two, explained for Jiang An. By the time the three of them reached the cafeteria, it was already quite crowded. Jiang An remembered the WeChat message Dr. Gao sent her yesterday and specifically went for a serving of braised pork.
As the three sat down, the nurses started bombarding Jiang An with questions, most of which were about her life after her mother’s death. Jiang An answered in an orderly fashion, not mentioning a word about her own marriage.
"Hey? Look, Dr. Gao is here for lunch." While Jiang An was busily eating, Nurse Xiao Liu suddenly nudged Xiao Ning sitting next to her and whispered.
Following their surprised gazes, Jiang An indeed saw Dr. Gao and Dr. Bai with their trays, sitting not far from them. The man still had a cold expression, his angular profile exceptionally handsome.
Sometimes Jiang An felt like the saying "his features were as refined as a painting" was coined for Dr. Gao.
Fearing another eye contact with the man, Jiang An immediately turned her head back. The two nurses at her table kept sneaking glances in Dr. Gao’s direction, and one of them explained to Jiang An: "You’ve just arrived, so you might not know yet!"
Jiang An’s chopsticks paused, and she looked up with a puzzled face, all ears.
"Dr. Gao and Dr. Bai are the two best-looking guys in our department, and lots of young girls have a crush on them." Xiao Liu raised her eyebrows, speaking with a lighthearted tone.
Jiang An seemed to be quite accustomed to Dr. Gao’s popularity. The first thing that came to mind was the scene where Dr. Li asked her yesterday who was more handsome, he or Dr. Gao. It seems there was a reason Dr. Li asked that question.
"And Dr. Bai, he’s the youngest male doctor in our department, quite accomplished, and recognized as a friend to all women. Everyone really likes to chat with him." Xiao Liu continued to introduce the two men to Jiang An, who nodded in agreement.
"Dr. Gao is usually very quiet, with a cool and abstinent vibe. He’s like the unattainable peak of our department, even if you like him, you wouldn’t dare to say it openly." As Xiao Liu spoke, her gaze still lingered on the two men, with a look of infatuation on her face.
Hearing them describe Dr. Gao as "unattainable," Jiang An couldn’t help but tug at the corners of her mouth and nearly choked. She hurriedly picked up the juice by her side and took a few sips to barely recover.
"You don’t know, but a nurse from the adjacent department once wrote a love note to Dr. Gao, and he just threw it in the trash without even looking at it. When that nurse found out, she cried her heart out!" Xiao Ning shared the gossip with Jiang An, her face full of excitement.
Jiang An silently ate her braised pork, listening to the tragic tale of the young girl, and couldn’t help but imagine the scene in her mind. Such a straightforward rejection seemed very much like something Dr. Gao would do. She couldn’t help wondering what it would’ve been like if she had confessed her feelings to Dr. Gao. Would he have outright rejected her as well?
But then again, it seemed like they never really confessed to each other, they just ended up together in a daze after a drunken kiss.
"I’m telling you, when I went to Dr. Gao’s office a few days ago, I saw him wearing a ring on his hand, not sure if it’s a wedding ring or not," Xiao Liu talked about Dr. Gao with stars in her eyes, sharing her recent discovery.
"No way, if Dr. Gao is really getting married, the department is going to see so many girls crying." Xiao Ning pursed her lips, looking incredulous and sighed.
Sitting opposite them, Jiang An slowed down her chewing and couldn’t help but break out in a cold sweat. If everyone found out she’d snagged Dr. Gao, the "unattainable," she was afraid they would give her a beating.
"It’s rare to see Dr. Gao come over for meals before, but these past few days I’ve run into him several times." The young nurse continued to gossip in front of her, while Jiang An, thinking she still had work to look at, found an excuse and left.
When she got up to put away her tray, she happened to run into Dr. Gao and Dr. Bai who had just finished their meal. Dr. Bai seemed to recognize Jiang An and teased, "Oh, isn’t this Dr. Li’s favorite pupil?"
Remembering the scene of Dr. Bai and Dr. Li bickering yesterday, Jiang An nodded respectfully and greeted both of them, "Hello, Dr. Bai; hello, Dr. Gao."
As a typical workaholic, Jiang An now just wanted to quickly get away after putting her things away.
Seeing the awkward young girl, Dr. Gao silently discarded his tray and followed Dr. Bai out, unfortunately walking right behind Jiang An. The two doctors discussed a case from the morning as they walked, leaving Jiang An feeling like she had a thorn in her back.
"I’m going down to pick something up, you go ahead!" As they approached the elevator, Dr. Bai received a text from the courier station and told Gao Chuan before heading towards the main entrance.
Jiang An heard the two talking behind her and continued to wait for the elevator, taking it easy. Gao Chuan quickened his pace and stood right behind her. Staring at the girl’s white coat-clad back, he remained silent.
Seconds later, the elevator arrived, and they walked in one after the other. Jiang An tensed up and stood to the side, pressing the button for the oncology department’s floor. Seeing that Gao Chuan, who stood behind her, didn’t speak, she pressed the close door button again.
As soon as the elevator doors closed, Gao Chuan suddenly reached out and took her hand. His large palm gently held Jiang An’s hand. Feeling his touch, she turned around in surprise to find Dr. Gao still with a calm face, but her own face was already flushed red.
"Dr. Gao..." Jiang An, realizing they were in the hospital, reflexively tried to withdraw her hand, but the man seemed unwilling to let go, holding her hand tight without any intention of releasing it.
With the elevator halfway up, Jiang An feared someone she knew would suddenly enter and see them holding hands. Noticing the man not letting go, she murmured softly, "Dr. Gao, this is a hospital."
Hadn’t they agreed to hide their relationship in the hospital?
"I know," the man said coolly, his gaze fixed forward, his voice deep.
Jiang An: "..."
Finally reaching the intended floor, the man finally let go of her hand. Jiang An, relieved from the binding, dashed out of the elevator as soon as the doors opened, blushing and flustered like a spooked fawn.
The man behind her watched her flee, the warmth of the girl’s hand still lingering in his palm, his lips curling into a slight, handsome smile.
He looked down at the hand he had just held Jiang An’s with, as if he could still feel the soft touch.
He was getting addicted to holding her hand...
