Chapter 98: Interns’ Gathering
Jiang An nearly fled at breakneck speed from the man’s gaze, only slowing down when she reached the empty public break room and, leaning against the door, belatedly covered her crimson cheeks with her hands.
It was utterly unfair, that man was simply too much.
Her heart throbbed wildly, as if it would burst from her chest. Only after Jiang An took out a paper cup and filled it with water from the cooler, drinking it, did the temperature of her face finally seem to subside.
It looked like it was necessary to have a chat with Dr. Gao tonight, she resolved firmly.
In the afternoon, Jiang An and Ren Lin had observed a clinical operation performed by Dr. Li. Though she had previous clinical experience arranged by her school, Jiang An was still far from being able to actually perform surgery herself.
The girl listened intently to Dr. Li’s explanation and took notes in her notebook, and half a day passed by just like that.
At the end of her shift, it was Ren Lin who reminded her of the evening’s dinner that she remembered the event, hastily taking out her phone to send a message to Gao Chuan.
At that time, Gao Chuan had already entered the hospital’s underground parking lot. Seeing the message from the girl about the dinner and that she’d be home late, he paused his action of starting the car and typed a line of text in their conversation.
When Jiang An received the message and opened it, her lips quietly curved upwards.
Gao Chuan: No drinking.
It seemed like a domineering command, but thinking about the "punishment" Dr. Gao had set for her, it was just like the behavior of a childish kid.
Infuriatingly childish.
"What’s making you smile?" Ren Lin had packed up his stuff and came over to her, seeing the smile on her lips and asked out of curiosity.
Jiang An snapped back to reality, turned off the phone and replied, "Nothing," then picked up her bag and went with Ren Lin to meet up with the other two interns.
This time, only the four of them were assigned to the oncology department. According to the hospital’s regulations, there were only two spots for them to remain, making them true competitors.
Apart from her and Ren Lin, there were another male and female intern; one was Lin Shu who organized this gathering, and the other girl was named Song Ya. Due to having different supervising doctors, they had barely seen each other these past few days.
The four arrived at the agreed-upon restaurant, a choice made by Lin Shu, a quieter Japanese place.
Before ordering the dishes, Lin Shu first asked everyone if they had any dietary restrictions, then passed the menu around.
As they waited for the food to arrive, they started with some casual conversation. Only then did Jiang An find out that Lin Shu had studied abroad, while Ren Lin and Song Ya were both from S University’s affiliated medical school and must be outstanding students to be able to apply to City Hospital.
"Ah, you guys are so lucky. Our Dr. Liu is really strict, you know, he even left us to do shifts with him." The other two interns spoke of their supervising doctor as if they had much to complain about but couldn’t.
Presumably, Jiang An and Ren Lin had it much better, as Dr. Li had scheduled separate night shifts for them; Jiang An’s was arranged for Thursday.
"What are your plans after this?" Lin Shu poured tea for everyone and asked tentatively.
"Not sure yet, staying at City Hospital would of course be the best," Ren Lin replied, accepting the cup frankly.
City Hospital can be considered one of the top few hospitals in the city. Many people would do anything to get in, so they naturally cherish this opportunity.
"I haven’t made up my mind yet. My parents have always wanted me to go into private practice," Song Ya propped her hands on the table, sharing her worries.
Everyone present actually knew full well that if someone were to stay, inevitably, someone would have to leave.
All three turned their gaze towards Jiang An. Jiang An thought about the overseas study opportunity she had given up before and shook her head, "I haven’t thought it through yet."
For her, the path ahead was still unknown; all she could do was focus on the present.
After all, she didn’t know how long her marriage with Dr. Gao would last.
A few minutes later, the waiter began bringing out the dishes. Lin Shu had just ordered a bottle of wine and placed several glasses in front of everyone. Just as he was about to pour some for Jiang An, she waved her hand refusing. She still remembered Dr. Gao’s advice—she must not drink alcohol.
"Can you really not drink?" Lin Shu asked, seeing the girl’s embarrassed expression.
Jiang An helplessly shook her head; it wasn’t that she didn’t want to give face—it was that with her low alcohol tolerance, if she passed out later, she’d need to rely on a few others to take care of her, the social mortification alone was enough to consider.
Sitting beside her, Ren Lin sensed the girl’s awkwardness and spoke up to ease the situation: "Let’s not drink. We still have to work tomorrow!" As he spoke, his gaze fell on Jiang An, who seemed apologetic for spoiling everyone’s mood.
"Yeah, let’s just drink tea instead!" Song Ya also lifted her cup and chimed in.
Hearing them say this, Lin Shu had to give up, sitting back down in his seat. Being a little older than the others due to studying abroad, he had more experience with social gatherings. Seeing that no one else was drinking, he put the wine bottle back.
Considering they all had to work the next day, the dinner ended around eight o’clock. Jiang An couldn’t really adjust to the Japanese cuisine and had barely touched the sashimi on her plate.
They parted ways outside the restaurant. Song Ya and Lin Shu had already left first. Jiang An was about to say goodbye to Ren Lin when she suddenly heard the young man next to her ask if she needed a ride home.
Caught by surprise, Jiang An hurriedly shook her head and declined: "No need, I’ll just take a taxi home."
Ren Lin didn’t insist. Just then, a taxi happened to stop in front of them. Jiang An waved goodbye to Ren Lin, bidding him farewell before getting into the taxi.
Ren Lin stood still and waved goodbye to Jiang An until the taxi drove off before he walked away.
It wasn’t until Jiang An was in the taxi that she finally let go of her tense demeanor. She had never been fond of such awkward situations, and she spent nearly the whole time feeling uptight. Xia Zi had once said that she was a bit socially anxious, uncomfortable in crowds.
Only after opening her cell phone did she find a WeChat message from Gao Chuan about a quarter of an hour ago, asking if he should pick her up. Jiang An’s fingers tapped on the keyboard to reply.
Jiang An: No need, I’m already in a taxi.
It was already 8:40 when she got home. Gao Chuan was in the study on a video consultation, so engrossed in the meeting that he didn’t notice the noise in the living room. On the video, a group of oncology specialists was having a heated discussion about a difficult case.
Since it was an international remote meeting, Gao Chuan spoke almost entirely in English when it was his turn. Jiang An sliced a fruit platter for Gao Chuan and entered just in time to hear him speaking fluent English to the computer screen. He wore a dark gray home suit, with somewhat disheveled hair resting on his shoulders, emitting a lazy aura.
Gao Chuan was focused on the computer screen, but out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Jiang An tiptoeing in to put the fruit plate in front of him. His thick brows raised slightly, and after making his final statement, he left the video call.
Just as Jiang An reached the desk, careful not to disturb him, she gently placed the fruit plate on the table. Thinking Gao Chuan hadn’t finished, she attempted to leave but was suddenly embraced around the waist by the man behind her. She lost her footing and fell straight into the lap of Gao Chuan, who was seated in the chair.
