Chapter 32: Chapter 31: Let Me Rub It for You
Gao Yu stopped in place, cocked his head, and saw Jiang An frown slightly and hook the corner of her mouth, then continued, "I don’t know what exactly happened between the two of you, but since you’re married, live well. Gao Chuan is someone who likes to keep things buried in his heart, and if you really want to understand him, you have to take it step by step."
The golden retriever circled around the two continuously, and Jiang An, listening to Gao Yu’s words, fell into deep thought.
"You can only see his heart when you get closer to him."
Dr. Gao has always been a godlike figure in her eyes, but she hadn’t expected that there was such a heart-wrenching story behind the man. Jiang An remembered how Gao Chuan was usually quiet and reticent, and suddenly envisioned the figure of the young man who had rescued the puppy more than a decade ago appearing before her.
Thinking of this, Jiang An suddenly felt a sharp pain in her heart, as if she had naturally assumed since she knew him that Dr. Gao, an excellent person, would not have any worries. But upon careful recollection, even Dr. Gao, who seemed capable of everything, also had things that troubled him.
Gao Yu still stood upright next to Jiang An, saw the girl’s thoughtful look, and his eyes flickered. At first, when he heard about his younger brother’s marriage, he was also surprised, feeling that there must be something unusual about it, but seeing the pure-eyed Jiang An, he actually breathed a sigh of relief. Although he didn’t know if she was Gao Chuan’s type, such an uncalculating girl surely wouldn’t let Gao Chuan suffer.
Gao Chuan’s flight back to the country landed three days later. The man, who had been immersed in the laboratory in Switzerland, had slept for a few hours on the plane, took a taxi home as soon as he got off the plane, and found that Jiang An was still not there. Dragging his exhausted body, Gao Chuan collapsed on the sofa instantly, probably barely able to keep his eyes open after so many days of non-stop work.
The room was eerily quiet, and soon snoring sounds rose. The man lay alone on the sofa and slowly drifted into sleep.
Unknowingly, an afternoon quietly passed away, dusk fell, the sky gradually darkened, clouds suddenly rolled at the horizon, twilight faded, and a crescent moon revealed a small sharp edge.
When Jiang An returned home and turned on the light, she was a bit surprised to find the man collapsed on the sofa. Then she walked to the edge of the sofa and gently crouched down, the man’s peaceful sleeping face was very close. Jiang An silently watched, Gao Chuan appeared to be sleeping deeply, his handsome eyebrows standing firm, and his facial features under the light looked even softer. Below his prominent nose were lips pressed into a line, and up close, he seemed even more refined than male models in magazines.
Even the sound asleep Gao Chuan still exuded an aura of keeping others at bay. Jiang An remembered what Gao Yu had said to her a few days ago; perhaps, this man had many vulnerable sides he had not shown. Just as the girl was drifting in her thoughts, the man lying on the sofa suddenly furrowed his brows, covered his abdomen with closed eyes, and his handsome face contorted.
Seeing this, Jiang An’s heart clenched as well, and before she could call out to wake him, the person on the sofa opened his eyes. Noticing the panicked girl crouching beside him, he blinked weakly and called out, "Jiang An..."
Caught off-guard by Gao Chuan suddenly waking up, Jiang An quickly responded, "Hmm, Dr. Gao, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"
Enduring the pain in his stomach, Gao Chuan maintained his calm voice, "It’s nothing, just the old issue with gastritis. Could you help me get my medicine from the bedroom? It’s in the bedside drawer on the left."
Jiang An looked at the man’s pale face and quickly followed his instructions, running to Gao Chuan’s bedroom. Soon she found the medicine bottle Gao Chuan had described and returned to the living room to watch him take it. The color had already drained from the man’s face, and due to the pain, he clenched his teeth and lay back down on the sofa without moving.
Jiang An remembered Shen Mei once mentioning that Gao Chuan suffered from acute gastritis. Clutching the stomach medicine in her hand, she looked at the man on the sofa with a heartache, "Dr. Gao, should I take you to the hospital?"
Gao Chuan looked up to see Jiang An crouching beside him with a somewhat anxious expression and understood that she was worried about him. He rasped, "No need, I’ll be fine after lying down for a while."
Jiang An did not insist further but still felt uneasy as she blankly watched the man enduring his pain. Gao Chuan noticed her constantly squatting by his side and staring at him, which made him somewhat uncomfortable looking back at the anxious girl. He suddenly felt he was not as nervous as Jiang An.
"Don’t worry, it’s an old problem. It will be fine soon," Gao Chuan said soothingly.
Initially trying to persuade Jiang An not to worry, his words unexpectedly caused the girl to retort with a bit of anger in her tone: "You have acute gastritis and still don’t eat properly, and keep eating instant noodles. You don’t know how to take care of yourself at all."
Listening to the girl’s words laden with a sobbing tone, Gao Chuan’s heart trembled slightly. Although he was chastised, a warm current slowly flowed through his heart.
Only after finishing her speech did Jiang An realize she had scolded Gao Chuan like a child being reprimanded, and she felt a bit astonished. She wanted to say something to smooth things over but then she heard a faint "Understood," from the man on the sofa.
At that moment, it seemed as though everything around dimmed, and only the pounding of her heart signaled her existence.
After a moment’s reflection, the girl quietly turned her blushing cheeks away, stood up, and went to the bedroom to bring Gao Chuan a blanket to cover him. Seeing that the man’s expression was still tense, she had a moment of inspiration and rushed back to her room to fetch a tube of ointment. Gao Chuan watched the girl clumsily shuttle back and forth in the living room, slightly lifting the corners of his mouth.
When the young girl came back to his side holding a tube of ointment, her eyes full of joy, she told Gao Chuan that it was given to her by her roommate who also had a stomach problem. Rubbing a bit on the stomach would produce a warming effect; she had used it a few times before when she had stomach pain, and the results were quite good.
"Dr. Gao, let me rub it for you," Jiang An eagerly opened the ointment, ready to lift the blanket covering the man, when suddenly the man whose shirt was lifted blushed, wanting to raise his hand to stop her but realizing the girl had already applied some to her hand and placed it on his abdomen, so he had no choice but to lie back down and passively accept it.
Jiang An gently rubbed Gao Chuan’s stomach, only aware that Gao Chuan usually worked out but not expecting to immediately feel the man’s firm abs, her little face blushed, and she bashfully lowered her head.
Gao Chuan did not stop her anymore and let Jiang An gently massage him. After a while, he really felt warmth spreading, and the pain from the massaged area noticeably lessened. He even felt a comfort he had never experienced before and slowly relaxed, closing his eyes and drifting back to sleep.
