Chapter 33: Chapter 32 She Is Really Likable

The following day, Shen Mei called to invite the couple back to the Gao Family home for a meal. Now that Gao Chuan’s stomach had recovered, he drove with Jiang An back home. As soon as they stepped through the door, the golden retriever dashed over from some hidden corner. However, its eager affection was still reserved for little Jiang An. The pup suddenly sprang up, nearly causing Jiang An to tumble, but Gao Chuan steadied him from behind with a quick lift of his hand.

"Yiyi, don’t be so rowdy," Jiang An said, indulgently stroking the golden retriever’s ears.

Gao Chuan, who had been standing by and watching the affectionate interaction between the man and the dog, was slightly surprised upon hearing the name "Yiyi" from Jiang An’s lips. However, he didn’t delve into it and simply warned Jiang An to be careful before they both proceeded inside.

Upon seeing the two arrive, Shen Mei quickly came over and looped her arm through Jiang An’s, leading him toward the bedroom while muttering about wanting to discuss the new makeup set they had bought the day before. Gao Chuan, who had been neglected for nearly a week due to the business trip, watched them with a hint of suspicion, wondering why the relationship between his brother Gao Yu’s wife and Shen Mei was almost non-existent, yet with Jiang An, it was as if she were her own daughter. Before Gao Chuan even had a chance to sit down on the sofa, Gao Lin called him to the study.

Just like the last time, Gao Lin offered several suggestions regarding their marriage. After a lengthy monologue, he pulled out a red gift box from a drawer and placed it on the table, his expression still stern: "I know you went on a business trip and didn’t bring back anything for your wife. When you go back, give her this necklace to make up for it."

The man’s gaze fell on the gift box on the table, and a cold glint shone in his dark eyes as he asked, "Why can’t you just give it to her yourself? Why must it go through me?" Though he spoke in protest, he accepted the gift, well aware that whether it was from him or anyone from the Gao Family, Jiang An would quietly put it away in the drawer in her room and only remember to wear it when visiting the Gao Family’s home.

In this play, Jiang An was indeed a flawless partner.

Gao Lin expressed dissatisfaction upon hearing what Gao Chuan said and began to nag, "That girl married into the Gao Family without asking for a dime. We must not let her suffer any grievances. In a while, take some time off to take Anan out for a trip to relax. Your mother and I will cover the expenses."

Gao Chuan responded with a vague tease as usual. Just as he was about to leave the study, Gao Lin stopped him and asked, "Anan came with you today, right?"

"Mhm."

Hearing the affirmative reply, a gleam of joy flashed in Gao Lin’s eyes as he said, "Go call Anan over to play chess with me. Tell her I’ve set the board up and am waiting for her."

Gao Chuan: "..."

Spending half the day there, Gao Chuan discovered that it wasn’t just those two; even the aunt who had always helped around the house praised Jiang An ceaselessly, mentioning how Jiang An had helped with chores and cooked incredibly delicious meals during her stay.

"Despite her young age, the girl is very capable and sensible. It truly is the Second Young Master’s good fortune," the aunt exclaimed.

Only then did Gao Chuan realize, given his family’s satisfied comments about Jiang An, that she had stayed at the Gao Family home during the week he was away on business. Moreover, she had even visited grandma with Shen Mei. Indeed, as they said, Jiang An was genuinely endearing.

It seemed no one disliked her, a stark contrast to him. Even the family’s golden retriever, used to his stern façade, was reluctant to get close to him, yet Jiang An had become fast friends with the little fellow in just one day.

Furthermore, even the usually strict Gao Lin was happily playing chess with Jiang An. The house seemed to suddenly be filled with much laughter because of Jiang An’s presence. Watching how Jiang An managed everything in the household so seamlessly, and seeing how much happier grandma was, Gao Chuan’s gaze lingered on the smiling girl, feeling as if she possessed some magical charm.

The problems that had plagued her were all effortlessly solved with her arrival.

Perhaps he really had found a treasure, the man thought.

At noon, the family gathered to have lunch. By the time Jiang An arrived, the only seat left was next to Gao Chuan. The girl pulled out the chair and just as she sat down, Shen Mei served her a bowl of food, placing it in front of her. "Eat up, you’re so skinny looking."

Two weeks had passed since the last family gathering, and Shen Mei had taken especial care concerning the couple’s preparation for pregnancy, with frequent gifts of bird’s nest soup and brewed medicinal tonics. Jiang An even felt that she had been over-nourished recently, to the point where the smell of the chicken soup in front of her made her feel nauseous.

Gao Chuan noticed that Jiang An had become the darling of the family; everyone’s attention was on her, and he couldn’t help but worry whether the young lady could handle it.

Watching Jiang An obediently drinking the chicken soup, Shen Mei’s satisfied smile curved, and she asked, "Anan, are you graduating next year? How are things going at school?"

Jiang An took a light sip of the chicken soup, a goji berry brushing across her tongue. She licked her lips and replied, "Almost done."

"Is it time to look for a hospital for your internship?" Shen Mei inquired.

Jiang An had already interned at a hospital last year, but had to look for another one after her mother fell critically ill. She had been so busy with her thesis recently that she hadn’t managed to find one yet. Before the girl could respond, Gao Lin interjected, "Have you considered City Hospital? I’ve heard you’re specializing in oncological surgery."

Hearing Mr. Gao’s words, ripples spread through Jiang An’s heart. The City Hospital was indeed the best in Jing City, but it’s where Dr. Gao worked. She always felt that it wouldn’t be right for her to intern there.

Shen Mei’s eyes lit up when she heard Gao Lin’s suggestion, adding excitedly, "Yes, that’s a great idea. Plus, with Gao Chuan there, he could take good care of you."

The family began to worry about Jiang An’s internship as if she were their own daughter, while Dr. Gao remained silent throughout the discussion.

Jiang An nodded along with the elders’ suggestions, though, in her heart, she resisted. It was already uncomfortable to work in the same hospital with acquaintances, let alone with Dr. Gao.

After leaving the Gao Family’s home that evening, Gao Chuan drove, and while they were waiting at a traffic light, Jiang An heard the man next to her say, "Just focus on your own matters. Don’t worry about pleasing our family."

Jiang An turned her head and saw Gao Chuan’s still stern face in the dark, knowing that he was trying to comfort her. She nodded belatedly, boredly gazing out the window. The evening twilight receded, casting a glow on the girl’s fair cheeks, while the gentle breeze blew in, lifting her black hair.

Gao Chuan had said similar things to her many times before. She understood that Dr. Gao wanted to remind her that this was a marriage without issues, and that she didn’t need to bend over backward to please his family members.

Or perhaps he was also reminding her not to take it too seriously and not to invest herself too much.

Perhaps Dr. Gao didn’t want her to do her internship at City Hospital, Jiang An mused.
