Chapter 31: Chapter 30 Dr. Gao’s Unknown Story
Gao Chuan, sitting on the chair, lowered his eyelids and looked sternly at Jiang An, who was squatting on the ground, almost seeping tears. Meeting his gaze with a helpless expression, she quietly and shyly pleaded, "Dr. Gao, my legs are numb."
Gao Chuan, intrigued, watched Jiang An gather enough courage to reach out to him from under the table. A rare smile appeared on the corner of his eye. He stood up, grabbed her hand, and pulled her up with a strong tug. Unexpectedly, the girl completely lost feeling in her feet and tumbled directly into the man’s stiff chest. Her lovely face instantly bumped against Gao Chuan’s chest. He hurriedly reached out to stabilize her, but suddenly touched the softness behind her. Both were momentarily stunned. Once Jiang An surprisingly looked up to see the man’s handsome face, a blush rose on her cheeks. Gao Chuan, snapping out of the moment, quickly retracted his hand, turned his face away, and glanced past her crystal clear eyes, formally stating, "Sorry, you are taller than I imagined."
Finally regaining some composure, Jiang An realized she was nestled in the man’s arms. The air was filled with an ambiguous scent. She hurriedly stood up shyly and leaned against the desk behind her, not daring to look directly at Gao Chuan in front of her.
"Let’s eat, the food must have gotten cold." Jiang An turned around to help Gao Chuan open the lunchbox, her face still as red as if it were on fire. Listening to her, Gao Chuan sat down and began to eat. The office was filled with an awkward atmosphere with just the two of them. Jiang An, watching Gao Chuan eat and considering her task of delivering the meal completed, was about to say goodbye and leave when Gao Chuan stopped her. The girl looked at him with a dazed expression.
"I have a research project to attend to, and I have to fly to Switzerland for a business trip tomorrow." The man’s sharp voice resonated in her ears, as if merely informing her. Jiang An, not expecting him to share this news with her, nodded in surprise and responded, "Okay."
Gao Chuan, hearing no further response from the woman in front of him, swallowed a mouthful of food and continued to explain, "It might take about a week, I will be troubling you during this period."
"Mm, no problem." Jiang An smiled serenely, revealing a pair of shallow dimples, seemingly unfazed by the news of Gao Chuan’s trip.
Gao Chuan watched Jiang An’s figure leave before turning back to his meal, his expression still stern and cool. Recalling the girl’s indifferent demeanor, he suddenly felt the food in his mouth taste bland.
The young girl’s face was still flushed when she got back into the car downstairs. She instructed the driver to head back to the Shen Family home. Upon learning of Gao Chuan’s trip, Shen Mei took the opportunity to have Jiang An stay over. The stay turned out to be a week, and over the days, she became much more familiar with Shen Mei and Gao Lin. Even the family’s golden retriever became attached to Jiang An. One day, as Jiang An was playing with the golden retriever on the lawn below the building, Gao Yu, who regularly returned, saw her from his car, stepping closer. He noticed a pure girl amusing a small dog fetching a ball, the afternoon sunlight casting a particularly tender light over both of them, as if something gently tapped his heartstrings. The man, hands in his pockets, strided over to them. Hearing his footsteps, Jiang An picked up the ball brought over by the golden retriever and respectfully greeted him, "Big brother."
Gao Yu nodded and bent down to caress the golden retriever’s head, his face emanating a smile: "It’s the first time I’ve seen it so eager to play with people."
Jiang An paused for a moment, the golden retriever rubbed against her leg and obediently stuck out its tongue, reminding her of the first time she came to Dr. Gao’s parents’ house, it seemed like she had a special connection with the dog, as the little guy kept pouncing on her.
"No, Yiyi is very good." Jiang An extended her hand and gently rubbed the golden retriever’s head, Gao Yu, standing beside her, heard her call it that and asked somewhat startled, "Yiyi, a name you picked?"
Jiang An revealed a slightly embarrassed smile and said, "I took the liberty myself, I had asked my parents before and the dog didn’t have a name so I just went ahead and named it."
Hearing her say this, Gao Yu raised his eyebrows, as if to conform to Jiang An’s unconfident words, he silently muttered, "Yiyi, good name."
Turning his head to see the golden retriever continuing to frolic in Jiang An’s arms, Gao Yu’s expression also relaxed, "Do you know the origin of Yiyi?"
Jiang An turned her head with a puzzled look, perked up her ears and heard Gao Yu say, "Actually, this dog seems like a means of atonement by my parents. Gao Chuan once picked up a puppy on the roadside near his school during middle school. The family was always against keeping it, especially dad who hated furry things in the house. Gao Chuan felt sorry for the puppy and secretly kept it in his room. One day, when he went to school and dad came back drunk, he heard the dog barking. Probably in a moment of impulse, he gave the dog away. After school, Gao Chuan eagerly went searching and got beaten up by dad when he found out. It was said that he finally located where the little dog was sold off to – apparently, it ended up in a dog meat shop and was eaten by someone."
Jiang An listened to Gao Yu slowly narrating and couldn’t help being somewhat astonished; she hadn’t realized Dr. Gao experienced such things in his childhood.
"When we found him, he was on the side of a big road sobbing heavily. The family thought that he, being well-behaved from a young age, wouldn’t remember this incident for long. At that time, dad was always vexed with business matters and not in a good mood; I was studying abroad and heard from home that he sometimes hit Gao Chuan. Feeling guilty about this incident, mom, despite dad’s objections, bought a puppy as Gao Chuan’s sixteenth birthday present for him. Unexpectedly, after the past event, Gao Chuan didn’t accept it at all, and the puppy had to be taken care of by the family. Later, the mother dog had a litter and most were given away; a few years ago, they passed away from illness, leaving only this one that is still kept by the family. Since then, Gao Chuan hasn’t liked interacting with small animals much, and usually, it’s someone else who plays with the dog," Gao Yu said, falling into reminiscence. Noticing Jiang An beside him had zoned out, unaware of many things about Gao Chuan’s childhood, he opened up further: "Actually, Gao Chuan has always been a very well-behaved child. Maybe because dad was quite strict back then, he always ranked top at school. When it came to college entrance exams, to make up for Grandma’s regrets, he applied for Medical College. It’s just that his temperament has been somewhat aloof since then. If there’s one thing he did that was out of line..." Gao Yu deliberately elongated his voice and looked towards Jiang An, who was full of anticipation beside him, suddenly finding it amusing to reveal his brother’s past in front of Jiang An, he continued, "It was marrying you."
Jiang An saw Gao Yu pointing at her and was immediately surprised, her mouth agape, Me?
Regardless of Jiang An’s reaction, Gao Yu tugged at the corner of his mouth, "This half year, because Grandma has been seriously ill, the family has been urging him to get married. He has been refusing marriage, which I have noticed. I thought he would continue to drag it, but unexpectedly, he abruptly married you. I don’t know how you two met before, but from what I know about him, with his obstinate and steady nature, it’s unlikely he would do something impulsive like eloping."
