Chapter 26: Chapter 25 She’s Too Clever

Gao Chuan, with a gloomy face, came out of the girl’s bedroom and saw Song Li, still leisurely eating in the dining room. Without a word, he walked to the balcony, lit a cigarette, and the milky white smoke slowly rose, blurring his rugged face.

Song Li came over and stood next to Gao Chuan, also lighting a cigarette casually. He hadn’t expected Jiang An to have such a low alcohol tolerance; it seemed a bit like he had bullied the girl at their first meeting. "Is your sister-in-law alright?"

Gao Chuan turned his gaze sharply and glared at him, his voice cold: "She’s fine."

"This girl is also sensible, looks obedient, and you should be careful not to let anyone bully her," Song Li said, squinting his eyes and biting his cigarette.

Indeed, she was too obedient, especially in front of him. She never contradicted anything he said, even about getting married she had followed his wishes. Gao Chuan thought about it and couldn’t help feeling irritable. Ever since they got married, his thoughts had begun to become chaotic like never before.

"Have you finished eating? If you’re done, scram."

"Alright then." Seeing Gao Chuan’s behavior, Song Li quickly left, but before going, he did not forget to ask Gao Chuan to apologize to Jiang An on his behalf. As he reached downstairs, he looked back towards Gao Chuan’s balcony still lit up, the man raising the corner of his lips.

This was the first time he had seen Gao Chuan handle a woman.

How novel...

The next day, Jiang An woke up still feeling dizzy. She remembered drinking with Gao Chuan’s friend the day before, falling into a drunken stupor after just three drinks. She weakly punched herself; this time she was thoroughly embarrassed.

She checked her phone and found out that she had slept until the afternoon, probably due to the fatigue of the past few days. Twisting her neck, Jiang An walked out of the bedroom and noticed no one was home. Thinking that Gao Chuan must have gone to work at the hospital, she went to the kitchen to look for something to eat and found the breakfast Gao Chuan had prepared for her, still the same bought porridge and buns from outside on the first day. However, because they had sat out too long, they had completely cooled down.

So this is what living together felt like. She oddly didn’t mind it, she thought, chewing on the bun dazedly.

After returning home from work, Gao Chuan found the door locked. Upon entering, he first took a bath, checked his phone, and saw a message from Jiang An sent in the afternoon, saying she was resting and had gone to her grandmother’s house. The man simply scanned their scanty chat logs and ultimately replied with a "Okay."

Jiang An had taken the initiative to visit the lady, which should have made him happy, as it might be good for the grandmother’s condition. However, looking around the empty room, Gao Chuan suddenly felt uneasy.

"Dr. Gao, don’t leave me, I only have you," these words that Jiang An had blurted out while drunk the previous night suddenly echoed in his ears again. He irritably flipped through the pages of a book, trying to focus but found it futile.

When had everything about Jiang An begun to gradually invade his heart and yet he had to eventually give up? The man leaned tiredly against the back of his chair, barely closing his eyes when another message from Jiang An came through.

Jiang An: Dr. Gao, grandmother said it’s too late, so she let me stay over.

The mobile phone screen emitted a bright glow, the man’s narrow eyes dark as ink, his expression utterly unchanging as he typed a reply.

"Hmm."

Cold, devoid of any personal emotion.

When Jiang An received the reply from Gao Chuan, she was lying in her grandmother’s bedroom, staring at the ceiling with an inexplicable acceleration of her heartbeat. She sighed in relief secretly, thinking she had narrowly escaped an awkward situation. Meeting Gao Chuan now, she really didn’t know how to face him after her embarrassing behavior last night.

"Dr. Gao, go to bed early," Jiang An typed on the keypad and sent the message, then thought for a moment and sent a "goodnight" meme too.

After patiently waiting a few seconds, she received Gao Chuan’s reply, still just a single word, "Okay."

Jiang An put down her phone and laid back on the warm bed, thinking of Gao Chuan’s icy face, her heart gradually softened.

On the other side, Gao Chuan was staring at the cat meme in his phone. Having mostly only interacted with colleagues and family, Gao Chuan had barely seen any memes before. He slowly opened the image Jiang An sent, a big-faced cat appeared, its cuteness was indeed likable.

Quite fitting, Gao Chuan thought, and then moved his fingers to save it.

Thus, the straightforward Dr. Gao acquired his first meme in his WeChat.

Grandma was naturally thrilled to see Jiang An visiting her, and she eagerly talked with Jiang An for a long time. The young girl with her sweet appearance and sugary words particularly endeared herself to the old lady. Soon, Jiang An ended up staying at the old lady’s house for several days.

Jiang An, who had grown up solely with Fang Qing, had never experienced the affection of the older generation. Now that she finally had a grandmother, Jiang An truly hoped from the bottom of her heart that her grandmother could live a long life. Yet, seeing her frail frame made Jiang An worry, even though Gao Chuan had told her before that her grandmother only had six months left. She sincerely wished her grandmother could slowly get better.

Jiang An and her grandmother were arranging flowers together in the small garden of the villa. The servant, standing beside them and watching their joyful interaction, also smiled happily, having not seen the old lady this happy in a long time. She thought Jiang An must possess some magic, as her presence had always delighted the old lady.

"It’s just our Anan who cares about me. The Second Young Master hardly comes once in many days," the grandmother said, gently caressing Jiang An’s hand with obvious affection in her eyes.

Jiang An smiled lightly, "Not at all, Dr. Gao is just too busy with work, that’s why he sent me to accompany you."

"You are always speaking up for him. You newlyweds shouldn’t be separated too long because of this old lady. Tonight, I’ll have him come over to bring you back," the grandmother pondered, thinking it wouldn’t be right to keep pressing Jiang An to stay, lest Gao Chuan say she was holding Jiang An back.

Hearing that her grandmother wanted to call Gao Chuan over, Jiang An looked panicked and quickly waved her hands to refuse: "No need, Grandma, I can go back by myself."

Before her grandmother could respond, footsteps were heard from behind. Aunt Liu, standing at the doorway, saw Gao Chuan arriving and called out, "Second Young Master." Jiang An, standing among the flowers, turned around in a fluster only to see Gao Chuan, dressed in a black suit, slowly approaching her.

Unintentionally, because Jiang An had been staying with her grandmother, the two had almost not seen each other for almost a week. Gao Chuan, having a break on the weekend, drove over after receiving his grandmother’s message. Seeing Jiang An, frozen among the flowers, Gao Chuan also paused for a moment before slowly walking towards her.

The autumn sunset was touching; its remaining glow spread over them both, the air filled with the scent of flowers. The man walked towards her step by step, the closing distance causing her heart to skip a beat.
