Chapter 27: Chapter 26: Sharing a Bed Again?
Out of nowhere, hopelessly, I go to love you, have loved you. — Xicheng Tears
The setting sun presses against the mountains, evening hues gently lower, and light red twilight casts a cicada-wing-thin veil over the entire city. Flowers in the autumn scenery sway slightly with Qing Feng, and a tall man with long strides approaches step by step. Seeing this, Grandma lets go of Jiang An’s somewhat chilly hand, smiling, "Alright, you two young ones have a chat, I’ll go have a look in the kitchen." With that, she cheerfully walks out of the garden, leaving Jiang An alone to face Gao Chuan, whom she had always been avoiding.
"Dr. Gao, how come you’re here?" Jiang An asks, her expression awkward as she stands with her hands behind her back, pretending to be ignorant.
Gao Chuan stops two steps away from her, his gaze settling on the trellis next to Jiang An. The tender white blooms are bursting forth with a strong floral fragrance, and the girl in the light-purple dress is smiling sweetly at him.
Under the setting sun, their shadows fall on the ground. Gao Chuan realizes that Jiang An still gets nervous at the sight of him and simply replies, "Grandma asked me to pick you up."
"Have you been enjoying your time at Grandma’s these past few days?" The man’s adam’s apple moves as he asks.
For some reason, the saying "so happy that one forgets to return home" pops into Jiang An’s mind. To others, it seems she’s been away from home for several days, and Dr. Gao has been left with something of a ’lonesome household.’
A laugh escapes Jiang An because of her sudden thought, her bright, sparkling eyes lively and enchanting. Without much thought, she admits, "Yes, I’m happy."
"I really like Grandma," says Jiang An as she gazes at the flower branches she had just pruned with the elderly lady, her lips curving into a crescent moon-like arc.
It’s that kind of smile again, Gao Chuan thinks, she seems to be easily moved.
"How about Dr. Gao? Have you been busy at the hospital lately?"
Not until the girl speaks does Gao Chuan turn his head to look to the other side and clears his throat before saying, "Alright, I’ve been resting the past couple of days."
"Oh," Jiang An nods, both understanding without saying that they would not bring up the incident from the day they were drunk; perhaps too much time has passed. Jiang An felt like she had finally escaped disaster and was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief, but just after they had dinner at the old lady’s house, a heavy downpour suddenly began outside. The old lady, feeling sorry for them having to travel through the rain at night, persuaded them to stay over.
Thus, the two of them, who hadn’t shared a room in a long time, are forced once again to sleep in the same bed. Jiang An feels as if there’s a rumbling in her head, much like the thunder outside the window.
After dinner, as Jiang An was watching TV with Grandma on the sofa, Aunt Liu suddenly called her and Gao Chuan, who was working upstairs. The two of them were forced to sit side by side in the chairs and watched as Aunt Liu placed two bowls of soup medicine that were black yet translucent red before them, not minding Jiang An’s blushing face. With hands on hips she said, "I heard you two are planning for a child, Grandma specifically got a prescription for you, and since you’re staying over tonight, I just happened to brew some. You two should give it a try."
Ah, Jiang An had forgotten how she had agreed to prepare for pregnancy at Ms. Shen’s home. She understood that Gao Chuan agreed at the time because he couldn’t stand the incessant nagging from his family. But now, seeing that they were actually taking action, Jiang An felt indescribably miserable and turned to glance at Gao Chuan beside her.
Could it be that the two of them, playing the part of husband and wife, would really end up having a child together! Jiang An turned her head and saw Gao Chuan silently picking up the medicinal soup and drinking it down in gulps, not minding the strong taste of the herbs. His facial expression seemed to twitch slightly.
Jiang An, who had completely lost hope, pinched her nose and took small sips, listening to Aunt Liu’s earnest persuasion for them to take the fertility preparation seriously and to use this time to nourish Jiang An’s body well.
After finally finishing the bowl of soup, Aunt Liu looked at the two obediently drinking their soup and nodded satisfactorily, collecting the bowls. "You two should go back to your room now and rest early while you have the chance."
Sitting next to Gao Chuan, Jiang An’s face had already turned beet red. Watching the man stand up and walk to the study, she returned to the living room to watch television for a while. Constantly being urged by her grandmother to go rest, she finally trudged upstairs and entered the room that her grandmother had meticulously prepared for them.
This time, there was none of the exaggerated decorations or revealing nightgowns. Taking advantage of the fact that Gao Chuan had not yet come, Jiang An went into the bathroom to take a shower. The warm water flowed inch by inch over the girl’s delicate, fair skin. Her slim figure was reflected on the misty mirror, the steamy mist surrounding her, making her cheeks appear rosy and exquisite.
Gao Chuan, who had been busy in the study until ten o’clock, entered the bedroom and saw Jiang An, already in her pajamas, lying on the bed browsing her phone. The girl’s small feet were swinging back and forth while watching a video, her loose pajamas sagging to one side, revealing two slender legs slightly bent. Seeing this, the man turned his head away and walked towards the bathroom.
Jiang An’s phone was playing a TV drama at high volume. She didn’t realize Gao Chuan had finished showering and come to the bedside until she sat up suddenly and instinctively covered herself with the quilt. It was only after both of them came to their senses that they awkwardly realized that their grandmother had prepared only one quilt for them. Jiang An, realizing that she had snatched it away, let go with some embarrassment, "Dr. Gao, it looks like... there’s only one quilt tonight."
Gao Chuan stood at the side of the bed, facing this scene, pinching the bridge of his nose, his expression still stern. He lay down beside Jiang An without a word, saying, "I’m not cold. You can cover yourself!"
Feeling as if she was playing the part of a "robber," Jiang An held the quilt, glancing at Gao Chuan beside her who was dressed in only a simple nightgown, feeling a sense of guilt. She stared at the ceiling with her big round eyes.
The moment the man lay down, he accidentally touched her, then quickly moved away. Jiang An held her breath—the bed at grandma’s seemed smaller than the last one they shared.
Gao Chuan, who had just handled an expert consultation, was still thinking about the case he had discussed, oblivious to the fact that Jiang An remained immobile beside him like a log, too scared to move.
The night outside the window deepened, darkness filled the sky, and the deluge of rain mixed with thunder echoed in the quiet room. Gao Chuan, with his eyes half-closed and contemplating, suddenly felt movement at his side. He opened his eyes to see Jiang An quietly draping half the quilt over them. Noticing that Gao Chuan had opened his eyes, the girl blinked her shy eyes nervously and explained, "It’s gotten a bit cold with the rain. Let’s share."
Saying that, the girl lay back down, and the distance between them closed instantly. Her faint scent wafted over to Gao Chuan, who stiffened, caught by surprise.
By the time he composed himself, Jiang An had already turned off the room’s lights. They were completely engulfed by darkness, yet neither of them closed their eyes to sleep. The room’s temperature seemed to rise considerably. The huge French window was adorned with streams of water, and amidst the silence, only their entwined breaths could be heard.
