Chapter 24 Jiang An, You Are Drunk

You are the rare surprise in my mundane life. —Xicheng Tears

About half an hour later, the three of them finally sat down to dine. Song Li brought out the red wine he had brought, unwrapped the paper around it, and looked towards Jiang An sitting across from him, not forgetting to ask, "Can sister-in-law drink alcohol?"

Jiang An, remembering her past drunken antics, hesitated before nodding, "I can drink a little."

Song Li brought over three wine glasses and slowly poured the wine. After washing his hands, Gao Chuan came over and naturally sat next to Jiang An, noticing the half-glass of red wine beside her and frowning. He and Song Li usually drank high-proof alcohol, and it seemed like too much for a young girl like Jiang An.

"If you can drink, then drink; don’t overdo it." The man’s eyes were dark and his tone commanding as he spoke.

Jiang An nodded at his words, picked up the wine glass beside her, and gently sniffed it. Taking a reluctant sip, the sour and sweet taste surprisingly tasted good. She quietly licked her lips as Song Li already raised his glass in front of her, "Here, sister-in-law, a toast to you. Feel free to reach out to me anytime you need anything."

Jiang An hurriedly lifted her glass to clink with the man’s, exchanging a few polite words. Meanwhile, Gao Chuan silently ate the food on his plate, overhearing Song Li start to chatter incessantly about his past to Jiang An.

"Sister-in-law, you wouldn’t know, but Dr. Gao started going on arranged dates since the start of this year. Many people introduced him to potential matches but he didn’t like any, yet in the end, it was you who won him over." Song Li spoke recklessly. As the words left his mouth, he distinctly felt Gao Chuan’s gaze turn colder as he looked his way, regretting bringing it up in front of Jiang An.

"Really!" Jiang An sipped a few more times from her glass, watching as it nearly emptied, and awkwardly responded.

Remembering when she encountered Gao Chuan on a date at the café and saw his date, a stunningly beautiful and strong woman, she indeed felt she couldn’t compare.

She was truly too ordinary, ordinary to the point that she wouldn’t stand out in a crowd.

As she pondered this, the light in the girl’s eyes gradually dimmed, and the emotions that surged through her prompted her to down the wine in her glass in one go. The deep red liquid slowly slid down her throat, causing a sudden stabbing pain in her heart.

No one had ever told her that she wasn’t worthy of Gao Chuan, but it was a well-known fact, Jiang An thought.

The atmosphere at the dinner table suddenly became awkward. Gao Chuan watched as Jiang An finished the wine in her glass and blocked her hand as she tried to pour more, gently holding the fair-skinned girl’s arm while frowning deeply and saying in a low voice, "Don’t drink anymore."

Turning his head, he saw the girl’s cheeks flushed with redness, her clear, watery eyes shimmering softly, and the corners of her eyes lifted as she smiled brightly at him, "It’s okay, I’m not drunk!"

Listening to her light tone, Gao Chuan’s face darkened sharply, his gaze settling on the half-empty bottle of red wine on the table. He had been so busy talking with Song Li that he hadn’t noticed how much the quiet Jiang An might have secretly drunk.

The girl’s hand clutching the wine bottle was forcibly stopped by Gao Chuan. The man stretched out his other hand to take the red wine first. With a flushed face, Jiang An’s mind was filled with thoughts of drinking. Her eyes continuously followed the wine bottle, and she reached out to grab it. She stood up and leaned toward Gao Chuan, who quickly extended his arm to keep it out of her reach.

As she got closer, Gao Chuan’s hand moved further away each time. The couple was arguing over a bottle of wine, while Song Li, sitting across from them, was dumbstruck at the scene. He was about to take a photo with his phone, but Gao Chuan gave him a stern look, prompting him to quickly sit back down and voraciously eat the steak on his plate.

"Give it to me, give it to me." A drunken Jiang An stood up, lost her balance, and fell into Gao Chuan’s arms. Gao Chuan hadn’t expected her to be unsteady and quickly put down the wine bottle to catch Jiang An. In Gao Chuan’s arms, she slightly lifted her head. Her messy hair covered her face, red as a rose. Alcohol slowly fermented, her drunkenness suddenly intensified. She stared at the handsome man in front of her, her face flushing even redder.

"Sorry, I feel a bit dizzy," Jiang An slowly freed herself from the man’s embrace, apologized in a low voice while rubbing her head, and before she could stabilize, she fell back into the warm embrace of the man. Gao Chuan’s cool voice then sounded above her head: "Jiang An, you are drunk."

Hearing this, Jiang An shook her head in denial, "No, I’m not drunk."

Song Li, who had been focusing on his meal, couldn’t help but laugh upon hearing their conversation. It was his first time seeing Gao Chuan being so patient with a girl. Could it be that he genuinely likes her?

This dinner was like any other day for Gao Chuan—his usual indifferent self. He began to wonder if there was something suspicious about their marriage. However, it seemed that Gao Chuan did at least care about Jiang An after all. Honestly, after so many years as good friends, Song Li was quite curious to see what it looked like when a usually aloof person like Gao Chuan fell in love.

Gao Chuan no longer let Jiang An struggle and helped her towards the bedroom, regretting that he hadn’t paid attention to her drinking earlier today.

He patiently helped the drunken girl out of her shoes all the way to the bed, then stood up to look at her flushed cheeks and heaved a slight sigh.

The deep autumn night was bright with moonlight, bathing Jiang An’s serene face. A sudden emotion stirred in Gao Chuan’s heart.

After all, he was helpless with her. Gao Chuan bent down, lifted the blanket on the side of Jiang An and covered her properly. He was about to leave when someone suddenly pulled his arm. Surprised, he turned his head back to see the slightly tipsy girl still with her eyes closed, murmuring softly as if in a dream.

"Dr. Gao, don’t leave me. You’re all I have."

Her tone was soft and filled with a vague sense of grievance, like a vulnerable child, gently reaching Gao Chuan’s ear. The man paused for a moment, standing silently by the bed, feeling a twinge of pain in his heart as he looked at his own arm being held by the girl.

It was he who had proposed marriage, forcibly dragging Jiang An into getting a marriage license and bringing a load of troubles to her side. She, for the sake of pure gratitude, had already done this much, yet he had never considered the kind of pressure his own Jiang An had to endure.

The gentle breeze drifted in through the window. Jiang An, overcome with sleepiness, gradually loosened her grip on Gao Chuan’s hand, turned over, and with a couple of muffled hums, fell fast asleep.

In the darkness, the man turned around with an expressionless face and left the girl’s room.

I won’t leave you—such a promise-bound word, he inevitably couldn’t give her that.
