Chapter 24: Chapter 23 Little Sister-in-law is Great

Jiang An spent three days straight in the library and barely managed to finish the first draft of her thesis. Sleep-deprived, she briefly looked over it, saved the document, and contentedly closed her laptop. She picked up her cellphone to quickly reply to some messages she hadn’t checked in the last few days. Seeing a message from Shen Mei from yesterday afternoon about sending bird’s nest for her and Gao Chuan, Jiang An hurriedly replied explaining that she hadn’t seen the message at school. After waiting a while without a response, she exited the app and, with heavy dark circles under her eyes, leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes.

Thinking she had stayed at the school for three days and had received no messages from Dr. Gao either, Jiang An assumed everything was fine with the Gao Family. After bringing a pile of material back to her dorm, she left campus, took a taxi, and returned to Dr. Gao’s home.

Guessing Gao Chuan was still at work at this time, she found nobody home when she opened the door, which eased her mind a bit. She returned to her room, took a quick shower, and fell into a deep sleep.

Song Li, who had been incessantly asking about Gao Chuan’s marriage ever since he heard the news, couldn’t meet up with the man involved, so he took matters into his own hands. He brought two bottles of good wine and some groceries and headed over, running into Gao Chuan returning from work just as he arrived at the apartment complex. After greeting each other, they went upstairs together with their items.

"You’re really being unfair, keeping it all secretive without even giving a brother a heads up," Song Li complained, his voice full of dissatisfaction. He and Gao Chuan had grown up together; they were close as life-and-death friends and yet he had to hear about Gao Chuan’s marriage from relatives.

The atmosphere in the elevator was a bit stagnant; Gao Chuan indifferently loosened his tie and responded, "You know now."

Song Li glanced at the man who appeared unconcerned and asked curiously, "How come? I heard from my aunt you married someone from outside our circle? And she’s seven years younger than you? You’ve gotta tell me how you charmed this young lady."

Turning his head, Gao Chuan saw Song Li’s gossip-hungry expression, raised his brows slightly showing his reluctance to entertain him, and walked out of the elevator first as they reached his floor, with Song Li slowly following behind with wine and groceries.

Gao Chuan had been busy with surgeries and hadn’t been home for days. He had naturally assumed Jiang An wouldn’t return today either but realized the door was unlocked when he attempted to open it. Seeing a pair of black canvas shoes on the shoe rack, he was certain Jiang An had come back. Something flickered across his face, and as Song Li followed him inside and switched to slippers, noticing a pair of pink slippers in the shoe cabinet, he teased, "Wow, moved in together so quickly, huh? You’re fast!"

Just a while ago, Song Li had mocked Gao Chuan for being forever single, and now here he was, married without a word. When Song Li heard the news, his jaw nearly dropped.

"Stop your nagging, cook whatever you want in the kitchen," Gao Chuan said coldly to Song Li as he placed his car keys on a nearby table.

"Sure, you’re the boss," Song Li, already used to Gao Chuan not cooking, had never planned to make him start now. He put the bags of groceries on the kitchen table, "Where’s my sister-in-law? I’ve been really looking forward to meeting her."

Gao Chuan walked into the living room to pour a glass of water and noticed a white canvas bag on the sofa. His eyes scanned the surroundings; he figured she must be sleeping in the bedroom.

Just when Jiang An, who finally had a chance to sleep as much as she wanted, woke up and saw it was already dark outside. It was 8:10 PM according to her phone. Thirsty, she thought about going out to get some water. Just as she entered the living room, she heard voices from the kitchen, figuring it must be Gao Chuan who had come back. Before she had time to think further, she heard someone calling her "sister-in-law."

Thinking about getting some water, Jiang An looked in the direction of the voice and saw Song Li, wearing a pink Hello Kitty apron, gleaming at her from the kitchen counter, with Gao Chuan also looking over at her as he heard the voice.

Upon seeing an unfamiliar face, Jiang An felt unconsciously nervous. Song Li, having walked up to her, enthusiastically introduced himself, "Hello, sister-in-law, I’m Song Li, Gao Chuan’s childhood friend, been really looking forward to meeting you and finally, here we are."

During their conversation, his gaze scrutinized Jiang An from head to toe: her loose pink loungewear, her simple bare face, her looks and demeanor didn’t match up to the sophisticated young ladies in their circle. She seemed very innocent, a complete student appearance, which puzzled Song Li as it was quite different from what he had imagined.

"Hello, I am Jiang An." Surrounded warmly by Song Li, Jiang An smiled awkwardly, thinking to herself how such a cold-natured person like Dr. Gao could have such a friend.

"Little sister-in-law hasn’t eaten, right? Come and try my cooking today."

Ultimately, Jiang An, who hadn’t had a drink, also squeezed into the kitchen and looked at the various ingredients on the counter, rolling up her sleeves to wash her hands and help, "Can little sister-in-law cook?" Song Li asked upon seeing this.

"Yes, a little." Jiang An turned on the tap, and the cool water slowly flowed over her slender, fair fingers.

Gao Chuan, who couldn’t cook at all, could only awkwardly pick vegetables in the kitchen. Seeing Jiang An enter the kitchen, his hands paused as he didn’t know where to start. Jiang An stood next to Gao Chuan and watched the man seriously picking vegetables, his clumsy and stiff movements were a stark contrast to his orderly manner at the operating table, which was somewhat adorable.

Jiang An couldn’t help but cover her mouth and giggle. Gao Chuan noticed her actions and asked in a deep voice, "When did you get back?"

"This afternoon."

"Have you finished all your work at school?" Gao Chuan continued his task and recalled the WeChat message the girl sent a few days ago.

Jiang An nodded and before she could explain further, she was called over by Song Li to help, and Gao Chuan, who was about to speak, fell silent and continued picking his vegetables.

The kitchen was somewhat crowded with the three people. Song Li, who had long been anticipating this, bombarded Jiang An with questions, and she obediently answered each one clearly. Discovering how interesting Gao Chuan’s friend was, she couldn’t help but laugh heartily due to Song Li’s amusing nature.

"Little sister-in-law, I heard you’re still a student at A University?"

"Yes, I’m graduating next year."

In one corner of the room, Gao Chuan listened to the other two chattering, which made them look more like a family. He seethed inwardly, seeing Jiang An smiling and talking with Song Li was especially irksome since he had never seen her this happy with him.

The man walked out of the kitchen with a somber expression, his lonely silhouette caught in Jiang An’s gaze, and she followed his look. Hearing Song Li jestingly say, "Dr. Gao knows everything except cooking, once you can cook, surely you’ll have the final say at home."

Jiang An lowered her head, recalling seeing instant noodles in Gao Chuan’s office and her lips curved into a smile, revealing a charming glint in her eyes.

So, even the perfect Dr. Gao has things he’s not good at.
