Chapter 211 When Will You Return to His Side
"I’ll drive you," the man’s deep voice fell into her ears.
The moment Jiang An turned around, she was met with the fragmented sunlight on her eyelids, and Gao Chuan was looking down at her with a slight bow of his head.
Shielding her eyes, the woman responded awkwardly, refusing immediately, "No... it’s not necessary."
She tried her best to appear calm, but the chaos inside her betrayed her in an instant.
Gao Chuan, upon hearing Jiang An’s straightforward refusal, seemed unsurprised, and without changing his expression, he looked up at the scorching sun overhead. Noticing the sweat on the woman’s face, his cool voice rose again: "It’ll be hard to hail a taxi here for a while. If you feel uncomfortable, I can drop you at the intersection."
When the man spoke, it sounded like an order that must be obeyed—overbearing as always.
Under the strong sunlight, Jiang An could hardly keep her eyes open. She thought for a few seconds and ultimately decided to get into the car with him.
Gao Chuan walked ahead. Jiang An, holding her bag, deliberately kept a distance from him. The man walked to the parking space, found his black Phaeton, got in, and started to reverse the car.
Jiang An waited where she was, and as the man turned the steering wheel and pulled up beside her, he opened the passenger door for her without a word.
Originally planning to sit in the back, Jiang An changed her mind upon seeing this and stepped into the car.
Gao Chuan drove off silently, his foot barely pressing on the accelerator as the car slowly left the residential area.
Neither of them spoke; the car was engulfed in silence, so quiet that they could hear each other’s breathing.
They say old lovers have an emotional meeting, but they were like strangers to each other.
Bored, Jiang An looked out of the window at the retreating landscape, never sparing Gao Chuan a glance.
Deliberate avoidance was her only tactic now.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, Gao Chuan drove the car meticulously, wearing sunglasses that hid his inky hair over his forehead, his peripheral vision occasionally glancing at the passenger seat.
The atmosphere in the car was stiflingly awkward.
After a long while, the man broke the silence with his first words.
"When did you return?"
Such a lonely conversation opener for a reunion.
Hearing his voice, Jiang An turned her gaze and softly replied, "This morning."
She knew he was asking knowingly, as Shen Mei had already mentioned it at the Gao Family’s dinner table.
Perhaps not to make their interaction too stiff, Gao Chuan unusually initiated a conversation.
"Do you have any plans after returning to the country?"
Startled by the question, Jiang An’s light brown eyes reflected in the rearview mirror, and the man’s cold gaze caught her contemplative look.
"I’ll find a hospital to work at," Jiang An murmured from the side.
She had completed an internship at a private clinic in the United States, gaining some experience, and with her prior clinical experience at City Hospital, she should have no trouble finding a job.
"Hmm."
"And after your job stabilizes?" The man’s eyes darkened as he continued to probe.
Expecting to end the topic, Jiang An sank into silence, not keen to answer.
Her future life was her own and had nothing to do with him anymore.
But with only the two of them in the car, she couldn’t just sit in silence without speaking. As Jiang An thought about how to deflect the question, a sudden ringtone interrupted.
Gao Chuan picked up the phone from the slot in front of him and glanced at the note, "Secretary Chen," slightly frowning. He lightly touched the Bluetooth headset on his left ear to answer.
Jiang An breathed a sigh of relief, inwardly thankful for the call, and relaxed as she turned her gaze back to the window.
"Mm, got it." Gao Chuan responded mechanically to the phone before ending the call with a lift of his hand.
The man glanced again at Jiang An beside him, still waiting for her answer.
Jiang An suddenly sat up straight, "This is fine, let me off here, please."
Gao Chuan, seeing that he had driven onto a busy road, had to comply with Jiang An’s request and found a spot where she could hail a cab to stop.
Jiang An thanked him before pushing open the car door.
Not even a form of address, polite yet distant.
Gao Chuan didn’t say anything, his gaze still lingering on the woman who had gotten out of the car, waiting until Jiang An hailed a taxi before he started the car again and left.
The man turned the steering wheel in a new direction, his eyes scattered behind his sunglasses.
He was still pondering the scarce exchange he’d had with Jiang An; she had not answered his question.
He had wanted to ask her, now that she had achieved her academic goals and her career was set to thrive.
So when was she planning to come back to his side?
However, seeing Jiang An’s eagerness to avoid him at the Gao Family today, it didn’t seem like she shared his sentiments.
Only, this time, he wasn’t going to let her go again.
Never again.

Jiang An took a cab back to the old house in the West Suburb, and knowing she would return today, Wei Yan had specially asked a cleaner to tidy up, so the house wasn’t covered in dust as she had imagined.
Jiang An spent the entire afternoon at home, sorting her things. Having been abroad for four years, except for occasional chats with close friends back home, she had nearly cut off all ties with Jing City.
After all, she had no family left, and even if she had impulsively married that year, it had ended abruptly.
She pulled out her diplomas and related documents from the compartment in her suitcase, intending to put them in the drawer by the bed, but upon opening it, she was stunned to see two red booklets piled on top of the certificates.
Red cover with gold lettering, one a marriage certificate, the other a divorce certificate.
They represented her short-lived one-year marriage, as well as her once-naive love.
Jiang An remained squatting, her gaze fixed on the glaring certificates, and her slender eyes suddenly brimmed with tears.
After a moment of daze, she regained her composure and tucked the new documents one by one into the drawer, finally burying the marriage and divorce certificates.
After finishing up, Jiang An changed clothes, took a quick shower, and lay down in bed. Having just flown back and not yet adjusted to the jet lag, she was already exhausted from Shen Mei dragging her out to dinner, handling the situation with trepidation throughout.
She slept rather peacefully, though the sleep was somewhat lengthy.
When Jiang An woke up, it was already nine o’clock the next day. She stretched and crawled out of bed, grabbing the cellphone by her pillow to find that she had missed quite a few messages from yesterday.
Ji Wanwan had arranged to meet her early knowing she was coming back, but Jiang An had completely forgotten after falling asleep, and Wanwan had sent her hundreds of unread messages.
Imagining Ji Wanwan’s frustrated look when she couldn’t reach her, Jiang An slightly curled the corners of her mouth and hurriedly replied.
Jiang An: Fell asleep yesterday orz
Jiang An: I’ll come to see you and the baby right away.
After getting out of bed and washing up, Jiang An received a reply.
Ji Wanwan: I’ll have the driver pick you up.
Ji Wanwan: Come to my place to play.
Jiang An: No need, I’ll come over myself.
