Chapter 214: Chapter 210 A Bit Colder

Chapter 210 Became Even Colder

For Jiang An, being whisked away to the Gao Family upon her return to the country was completely unexpected.

After all, unlike before, her marital ties with Gao Chuan had been severed, and a visit to the Gao Family would at most make her a guest.

She sat on the sofa, chatting with the patriarch for a while, maintaining a rigid posture and stiffly answering Gao Lin’s questions.

As if deliberately catering to her emotions, the elderly couple tacitly avoided mentioning the divorce, and Jiang An secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

Taking advantage of the patriarch going back to his room to take his medicine, Jiang An, still unable to change her habit of entering the kitchen, voluntarily went to help.

Nanny Chen, busy at work and familiar with Jiang An from the past, instinctively started to call her Second Young Madam, but Jiang An hastily corrected her: "Nanny Chen, we’re divorced now, you can just call me by my name."

The domestic worker’s face paused at the sound, and suddenly remembered Shen Mei’s instruction, she slapped her mouth, "Look at my memory, I’ll call you Anan from now on."

Jiang An didn’t dwell on the matter and went straight to help pick vegetables, quietly contemplating today’s events.

She couldn’t quite figure out where things had gone wrong, as the Gao Family still seemed to regard her as their daughter-in-law, even though she and Gao Chuan had divorced four years ago.

And during those years, there had been no contact whatsoever.

She had thought that this return to the country, although inevitably crossing paths with Gao Chuan, would not lead to any unnecessary entanglement after being apart for so long.

But Shen Mei’s maneuvering left her utterly disconcerted.

At the moment, she was thinking about quickly finishing this "Hongmen Banquet," and thereafter, trying her best to avoid contact with the Gao Family.

As she was lost in her thoughts, Shen Mei cheerfully walked in, saw Jiang An busy in the kitchen, and immediately urged her to sit on the sofa, declaring the kitchen work was fine left to her and Nanny Chen.

Jiang An, having been pushed out so forcefully, could only helplessly return to the living room.

The woman paced over, and upon lifting her eyes to see a familiar figure on the sofa, suddenly halted.

Gao Chuan was sitting there, when exactly he had taken a seat, she didn’t know. The man was wearing a sharp suit, his demeanor clear and tall, slightly bending forward as he fiddled with the teacup on the coffee table.

At a glance, his eyebrows and eyes were sharp; his nose bridge high; his features as intricate as finely sculpted artwork; his lips lightly closed, his expression as indifferent as ever.

He seemed even colder than four years ago.

Hearing footsteps, the man looked up, and unexpectedly met Jiang An’s gaze, his warm eyes just like before.

In an instant, both were startled.

Jiang An had not imagined a reunion with Gao Chuan, yet didn’t expect it to be so abrupt.

Shen Mei, after all, had tricked her; only now did she realize why the woman was so eager to get her out of the kitchen.

Gao Chuan gazed at Jiang An, a feeling of strangeness suddenly arose in his heart. After the long four years, Jiang An seemed much more mature; her formerly black hair now styled in French curls framing her innocent face; her cheeks a peachy rouge, eyes shaped like almonds, dressed in a floral long dress reaching her ankles, her slender waist seemingly a handful, seemingly more feminine than before.

Noticing the man staring directly at her, Jiang An’s face showed embarrassment, quickly lowering her head to avoid his gaze.

The family’s golden retriever, unnoticed at what time, began circling her feet. Jiang An felt as if she had found salvation, crouching to play with the dog before leading the golden retriever away from the living room.

The man sitting on the sofa watched as Jiang An shyly avoided his gaze, slowly retracting his eyesight and silently continuing to fiddle with the teacup that Jiang An had just used, a faint hint of unnoticeable desolation flashing in his eyes.

Jiang An fled from the man’s line of sight almost at lightning speed, following the golden retriever into another room, only to lean against the door edge in panic, her heart pounding frightfully.

She had thought that four years were enough for people to let go, not until she saw that man again did she realize, some memories just can’t be forgotten.

"Calm down, calm down..." Jiang An patted her chest, forcing herself not to overthink.

Since she had returned, she had made up her mind to start afresh.

Gao Chuan, for her, was totally a thing of the past, Jiang An convinced herself.

The golden retriever at her feet barked twice, which brought her back to reality, and she bent down to gently stroke the top of the dog’s head.

As the woman and dog were joyfully playing in the room, the door was suddenly pushed open – it was Nanny Chen calling her to eat.

Jiang An casually responded and began to walk out.

She couldn’t help but soothe herself – there was nothing to fear; it was just sitting down to share a meal.

Shen Mei had already set the table, and seeing Jiang An wash her hands and come over she pulled Jiang An down into a chair, the old lady still playing dumb in front of her, saying she didn’t know why Gao Chuan had come over.

Jiang An didn’t try to figure out what exactly the old lady was thinking and sat down quietly.

Less than a minute later, Gao Chuan took a seat beside her, his crisp sandalwood scent entering her nostrils, familiar yet foreign.

Throughout the meal, the Gao Family couple focused their energy entirely on Jiang An, offering her food and showing warmth, treating the Gao Chuan beside them as if he were invisible.

The man sitting beside her simply bowed his head and ate, listening to the conversation between Jiang An and the elders, never saying a word.

The atmosphere at the dining table was eerily tense, with the uninitiated likely to think that Jiang An was the Gao Family’s daughter just returning from studying abroad, and Gao Chuan the guest.

Finally, when the lunch had ended, Shen Mei tried to speak and retain her, but Jiang An flatly declined.

"Anan, don’t overthink it. I just feel too sorry for you. It’s not easy for a young girl to study abroad alone, I just wanted you to feel some warmth when you returned," Shen Mei hurriedly said as she saw her wanting to leave.

Jiang An knew that Shen Mei was always kind-hearted, but calling herself "mom" was indeed somewhat inappropriate.

"Auntie, it’s getting late, I need to go back and tidy up. I’ll come and visit you another day!" Jiang An politely said goodbye to the two elders, moving quickly, eager to escape this place of trouble.

Shen Mei suggested letting the family driver take her, but Jiang An decisively refused and hurried downstairs alone.

Having shaken off the awkward atmosphere, Jiang An’s expression became considerably more relaxed.

It was only when she reached the entrance of the community did she suddenly freeze; the Gao Family lived in a high-end district, and looking around, a lineup of fancy cars was visible, making it tough to hail a cab in the intense midday heat.

She loitered on the spot for a long time, umbrellaless and helpless under the blazing sun, when suddenly a familiar voice came from behind her.

"Where do you want to go?"

Jiang An turned around following the voice, and Gao Chuan was somehow already standing behind her, his tall figure shielding the intense light from above as she turned her head.

The imposing shadow loomed, and what came into her view were a pair of clear and profound eyes.
