Chapter 185 She Shouldn’t Have Come
A few days later, Jiang An was invited to attend Ji Wanwan’s wrap-up party.
Although it was meant to be Ji Wanwan’s retirement ceremony, what caused a sensation at the venue was Gao Yu appearing at the party and personally announcing that Ji Wanwan had officially become the spokesperson for Gao Family’s jewelry business; Moreover, the man openly admitted to the media on site the recently rumored secret marriage between him and Ji Wanwan.
This move was killing two birds with one stone; before her retirement, Wanwan really managed to gather a strong following for herself.
Anyone with a clear eye could see that Gao Yu had organized this wrap-up party to please his wife, inviting many social elites, truly giving Ji Wanwan a lot of face.
Jiang An rarely attended such high-profile parties. Since Wanwan, the protagonist, could not stay by her side, Jiang An barely knew anyone there and had to stand awkwardly in a corner alone.
Occasionally, waiters in vests and bow ties would shuttle through the crowd with their trays, attentively offering a glass of red wine to Jiang An, who sat alone in the corner.
The entire hall was brilliantly lit, with countless roses and gifts piled on the central stage, a champagne tower as tall as a person next to it, and a dessert table that had everything one could wish for. Well-dressed guests grouped in twos and threes, chatting and laughing; the scene was splendid.
In the bustling crowd, Jiang An watched Gao Yu and his wife toasting at the other end of the banquet, her head bowed slightly shaking the half glass of red wine just handed to her by the waiter, her eyes and eyebrows revealing an uncontrollable sense of loss.
Perhaps, as Dr. Gao had said, she really shouldn’t have come to this kind of occasion.
Today, Jiang An was wearing the evening dress she had bought at the bridal shop that day, her fair skin complemented by the light blue hue, her delicate cheeks showing a bit of beauty, and her eyes, like water, seemed to sparkle under the glowing white light, making her look like a naïve wealthy young lady from a distance.
There were inevitably people who came up to talk to her, all with clichéd openings, and Jiang An instinctively wanted to wave them off but ended up speaking incoherently.
The gentleman standing opposite saw her panicked appearance and couldn’t help but smile, it’s rare to see such a pure girl in this profit-driven field.
Jiang An could only awkwardly raise her glass in return, her eyes still carrying traces of confusion.
Perhaps she did not realize that at this moment, in another corner of the banquet not far away, Gao Chuan in a grey suit was looking towards her direction, his gaze piercing through the crowd, his incredibly handsome face as cold as ice.
He remembered he had told her before to steer clear of such occasions.
Yet today, he happened to see her here, and during that time several men approached to talk to her, Dr. Gao’s expression growing even colder.
Little disobedient cat, he thought to himself.
However, Jiang An did not realize that a big trouble was about to unfold on her; the girl who couldn’t handle her alcohol declined a man’s invitation and walked to the other side of the banquet alone.
Thinking she could find some solace, she realized many people were looking at her with surprised gazes, Jiang An slightly turned her head, puzzled by everyone’s scrutiny.
She awkwardly sipped her red wine, only wanting to escape this dreadful place.
The whispers of gossip still reached her ears, and though she remained standing firmly, her heart started pounding.
"Look, why is she dressed like the Song family’s young miss?"
"A fashion faux pas, so awkward."
"Who is she? Why haven’t I seen her before?"
Caught in the whispers of the crowd, Jiang An pretended to swallow her saliva calmly.
So, Song Xin also came today and wore the same dress.
Just as she was guessing, a woman with a graceful demeanor stepped out from the crowd, greeted the group familiarly, and looked in the direction everyone pointed at when they talked about the dress. Indeed, she saw Jiang An standing alone in the corner.
Song Xin held the wine glass in her hand, her brows slightly furrowed, a hint of surprise fleeting through her mind.
But more adept at handling such situations here, seeing Jiang An standing awkwardly out of place, the woman suddenly slanted her mouth.
She hadn’t expected that her casual comment about teasing Jiang An would lead her to actually buy that dress.
It seems like this was a show of defiance towards her, but Song Xin has always faced challenges head-on.
While everyone watched, the woman walked towards Jiang An, greeting her with a smile that hinted at cunning: "Jiang An, I didn’t expect you to be here today too."
Jiang An, with an embarrassed smile, naturally appeared weaker in spirit.
Song Xin feigned generosity, complimenting, "You really bought it, huh? It suits you much better than me."
Jiang An noticed the gazes from the crowd and suddenly found herself in an awkward position, laughing awkwardly in politeness: "You look very beautiful too."
"Is Gao Chuan here today as well? Not with you?" the woman casually mentioned.
Jiang An’s eyes dimmed upon hearing this; she hadn’t known that Dr. Gao would also be at the event.
The girl’s eyelashes fluttered as she formulated a retort to seem more confident, but Song Xin stepped closer to her, "Come, let me toast to you."
At this moment, Jiang An, internally in turmoil, could only raise her glass to clink with the woman’s, only for Song Xin to suddenly pour the red wine in Jiang An’s glass onto her own chest. The deep red liquid instantly dripped down her dress to the floor.
Song Xin feigned a scream, and the surrounding people quickly gathered around. Jiang An stood frozen, finally realizing it was all a setup by Song Xin.
"Jiang An, I came to toast you out of kindness, why would you splash me?" the woman angrily looked at her, pretending to be shocked.
Seeing this, everyone assumed Jiang An, in a fit of pique over the dress clash, lashed out at Song Xin, casting mocking glances her way.
"This girl is so scheming although she looks so innocent!"
"Exactly, it’s just a dress clash. Why splash someone?"
"Such bad manners!"
The crowd, oblivious to the truth, began to point and whisper, and Jiang An blushed with embarrassment, hurriedly defending herself: "I didn’t do it, she did it herself."
But it seemed no one believed her; she looked like a clown, only making things worse for herself.
With the support of a friend, Song Xin glared at her, a subtle glee surfacing on her face as she observed Jiang An, isolated and unsupported.
Competing with her, this young girl was out of her depth.
Jiang An was nearly in tears, the surrounding crowd drawing even more attention. Just when she felt utterly helpless, a tall figure suddenly burst through the crowd and pulled her away from the chaos by her hand.
Jiang An, looking at the familiar and upright figure in front of her, called out with a mix of grievance, "Dr. Gao."
