Chapter 184 Who Looks Better, Me or Dr. Song?
Some words, once spoken, lead to a complete defeat. —Xicheng Tears
Tonight was Xia Zi’s bachelorette party, and Jiang An lingered for a while before finding an excuse to leave.
At the party, she was coaxed by Xia Zi to drink a bit of alcohol. When she left, her head was dizzy, fortunately, Xia Zi, not feeling reassured, had someone take her home.
The night was like thick ink, and the moonlight draped over the city like a silver cage. The gentle evening breeze swept through the window and poured onto the girl’s slightly flushed cheeks, but it couldn’t blow away the lingering irritation in her heart.
Some things accumulated in her heart had become a knot that couldn’t be untangled; the more you try to shake it off, the more it claws at your heart.
Before long, the driver arrived at the apartment complex where Jiang An lived. Turning back and seeing the girl stumbling out of the car, he worriedly asked if she needed help getting up.
Jiang An smiled and shook her head, refusing his offer, and walked in alone.
Even though she had drunk some alcohol, she was clear that she wasn’t drunk.
At that time, Gao Chuan was still busy in the study. The laboratory in Switzerland had sent a message; the new anti-cancer drug they had been working on had entered a critical phase, inviting him to participate in the experiment. However, he had yet to agree.
This was nearly two years of his hard work, but now his grandmother was lying in the hospital, and he was afraid of missing her last moments.
"Gao, you better reconsider, your involvement is crucial," the person in charge in the video advised him at last. The man sitting by the desk silently nodded his head.
Just as he was torn about this matter, the door to the study was suddenly opened, and his gaze shifted to see Jiang An, dressed in a light blue gown. The girl’s face was tinged with thin layers of blush and when she stepped towards him, she stumbled, but fortunately, he quickly reached out and caught her in his arms before she fell to the ground.
Jiang An sat on the man’s lap, instinctively hooking her arms around his neck.
"Did you have fun this afternoon?" Gao Chuan touched the girl’s slim waist, knowing that Jiang An went with Xia Zi to try on wedding dresses, and asked indulgently.
Jiang An silently nodded, but knew deep down how terribly she had spent the day.
Even though the girl’s face didn’t show signs of drunkenness, Gao Chuan still smelled the alcohol on her and frowned slightly, asking gently, "Did you drink?"
Jiang An did not answer his question. Gathering courage from somewhere, she boldly leaned in and pressed her lips against the man’s thin lips.
The man sitting in the chair reacted, tightened his embrace, and deepened the kiss.
Their breaths intertwined, and the man greedily explored every corner of her, and soon her breathing became heavy, and tiny beads of sweat appeared on her nose. At the moment when their intimacy reached a passionate height, she slowly pushed him away.
Gao Chuan looked at her with puzzled eyes, her hand still on his chest. She lowered her head and softly asked, "Do I look good in this dress?"
In the silence, her light voice was like a mountain stream’s clear water, stirring the heart.
It seemed that her shy demeanor amused Gao Chuan; he extended his hand to her exposed back, his warm palm gently caressing her waist, and he answered in a deep voice, "You look beautiful."
However, such a response did not seem to cheer up the girl. Jiang An suddenly looked up at him, stubbornly continuing to ask, "So, who looks better, me or Dr. Song?"
Even though she had a gentle disposition, it did not mean she lacked a sense of competitiveness.
Facing the blatant provocation from Song Xin, she had already stepped into the trap she had woven.
Upon hearing her suddenly mention Song Xin, Gao Chuan’s eyes sharpened, his cool and aloof gaze fell on Jiang An.
"Why would you suddenly bring her up?" the man’s voice contained a hint of deep displeasure.
Jiang An heard him questioning back, and she defiantly moved herself away from the man.
She thought she had really gone crazy, speaking the words she dared not utter ordinarily even though she had not been drinking.
"So you like her, don’t you?" The girl uttered, avoiding Gao Chuan’s gaze as if she was afraid that once she met his eyes, she wouldn’t have the courage to ask.
The fragile voice of the girl filled the room; the man sitting in the chair suddenly stiffened his face.
He wondered why Jiang An would suddenly think this way, as they had never talked about this matter before.
He had thought those baseless misunderstandings had passed, and Song Xin had not been bothering her recently; unexpectedly, now Jiang An was jealously making issues out of nowhere.
The man took the girl’s hand and explained briefly: "I don’t like her."
"We’re just ordinary friends," the man said, apparently not intending to tell Jiang An about the past grievances he had with Song Xin.
He felt it unnecessary; as long as he only had eyes for Jiang An now, that was enough.
But Jiang An seemed to not see it that way; even though the man had already declared that he and Song Xin did not have that kind of relationship, she still remembered the words Xia Zi had told her that afternoon.
It takes two to tango; even if Gao Chuan had no intention now, that might not stop Song Xin from trying to seduce him repeatedly.
"Then why do you like blue because she likes wearing blue dresses?" Jiang An stubbornly raised her head, a sharpness showing in her foxy eyes.
But having finally voiced the concerns buried in her heart, she regretted it.
Some questions, once asked, mean losing everything.
Gao Chuan, hearing her words, his eyes momentarily flashed differently.
"Who told you these things?" The man frowned, his gaze towards her carried a bit of sharpness.
He didn’t know where Jiang An had heard these rumors, even though he had made it very clear why there was still this senseless bothering.
Moreover, Jiang An seemed to be easily angered by him recently; so this was the reason.
Jiang An, seeing the man in front of her not retorting, seemed to have understood something. A hint of sorrow emerged in her eyes; so all of this was true.
Gao Chuan didn’t loosen her hand, soothing her with patience: "Jiang An, don’t believe those rumors, I have nothing to do with Song Xin, and I won’t in the future either, understand?"
"But..." Just as Jiang An began to speak, a burst of cell phone ringing interrupted her, the man let go of her hand and glanced at the caller ID which showed it was from the laboratory, he stood up preparing to head to the balcony to take the call, walking by the girl he touched her head: "There’s nothing ’but’, trust me, okay?"
"It’s getting late, you have to work tomorrow, go back and sleep first, I still have things to busy with." After saying that, the man turned and left the study, leaving Jiang An still stunned at her spot.
The girl’s gaze settled on the only photo placed on Gao Chuan’s desk, a photo she had noticed a long time ago. It showed Gao Chuan in a white lab coat with several friends, the backdrop being the Swiss Alps.
She had never thought much about it before, but now she suddenly realized that Song Xin was the only girl in that photo.
Jiang An’s pupils fiercely sank, her eyes welling up with acid, as she strained to tilt her head and kept herself from crying.
She found herself strange, even though the man’s answers were exactly what she wanted, why did she still not feel satisfied.
Perhaps, after all, she couldn’t tolerate any grit in her eyes.
