Chapter 183: Fight for What You Like
About two weeks later, as April was coming to an end, Xia Zi’s wedding date was drawing near. She made an appointment to go wedding dress shopping with Jiang An one afternoon.
As Xia Zi had been busy arranging her wedding, and with Jiang An rushing between work and the hospital, they hadn’t had the chance to meet for a while. Now, seeing her best friend from university about to enter the sacred halls of matrimony, she couldn’t help feeling emotional.
Unfortunately, due to her own early marriage, she could not fulfill the role of bridesmaid as they had once promised each other, but she would still overcome all obstacles to attend the wedding.
After all, Xia Zi was one of the few good friends she had in Jing City.
As Xia Zi tried on several wedding dresses, she complained to Jiang An about the troublesome tasks she’d been handling for the wedding prep, which were almost all hands-on and more tiring than working at the hospital.
Jiang An teased her for "not realizing the happiness she was in" while watching Xia Zi enter the dressing room again, then turned around and aimlessly wandered the shop out of boredom.
This was a famous haute couture wedding dress store, and within a few steps, a white dress on display caught her eye. Draped on the mannequin was a gown like feather-light tulle that gave off a sheer luxurious vibe, with a waist-defined style that flowed gracefully to the floor, sparking endless daydreams.
Perhaps every girl dreams of one day wearing a beautiful wedding gown to become the most stunning bride in the world.
An attendant noticed Jiang An staring transfixed at the gown and kindly approached, asking, "Miss, may I help you with anything?"
"If you like it, I can take it down for you to try on," offered the attendant, breaking Jiang An out of her reverie. Jiang An quickly waved her hands and declined, explaining that she was there to accompany a friend in trying on wedding gowns.
The girl awkwardly returned to her original spot to wait for Xia Zi who was still changing, and took a sip of coffee from the table to ease her embarrassment.
Xia Zi went through three dresses before settling on one. Seeing there was still time, she encouraged Jiang An to pick one too.
"Sooner or later, you and Gao Chuan will have a wedding. You’ll have to pick out a dress at some point," Xia Zi urged, pulling her in front of a row of wedding gowns.
Jiang An ironically smiled, thinking she had secretly gotten married before Xia Zi could, and now, even as Xia Zi was about to have her wedding, she still appeared single in the eyes of others.
Ultimately, Jiang An did not choose a wedding dress, but under Xia Zi’s persistence, she reluctantly picked out a light blue evening gown.
Seeing this, Xia Zi pushed her towards the changing room, proclaiming that she should try it on to see the effect. Facing her friend’s enthusiastic request, Jiang An had no choice but to comply.
This was an off-the-shoulder lace evening gown with a ruched design from the waist down. It wasn’t until she put it on that she realized the back was entirely open, and to her surprise, it fit quite well.
After changing, she opened the curtain and found neither Xia Zi nor the attendants present. Jiang An walked towards the mirror and was just about to twirl when she heard the sound of a curtain being drawn from the next booth.
She turned and was surprised to see Song Xin step out from another dressing room, wearing the same style gown. The woman lifted her head and was equally astonished to see Jiang An.
Song Xin had definitely not expected to run into Jiang An here, let alone for them to coincidentally favor the same gown.
Seeing Jiang An frozen in place, the woman curled her lips and stepped closer, seemingly assessing her from head to toe, her eyes reflecting a hint of mockery, "I really didn’t expect we could end up liking the same dress."
Implicitly, they had both fallen for the same man.
For some reason, every time she faced Song Xin head-on, Jiang An would invariably become flustered, and this time was no exception.
Hearing the woman’s provocative words, Jiang An stood there, unable to utter a single response.
Yet the more she did so, the more triumphantly Song Xin advanced a step closer and slowly leaned into Jiang An’s ear, laughing as she said, "Oh, by the way, you probably don’t know this, but Gao Chuan’s favorite color is blue."
"Do you know why?" Song Xin whispered near her ear, her warm breath spraying on Jiang An’s left ear.
The girl bit her lip tightly, a hint of anger floating in her starry eyes.
But she felt so powerless, because it was obvious that she did not know Gao Chuan’s favorite color.
How ridiculous, a woman actually understood her own husband’s preferences better than his wife did.
Just then, Xia Zi, who had just returned from outside, happened to walk in and saw the two standing together, calling out "Jiang An."
Intermingled with Xia Zi’s voice was Song Xin’s phrase, "Because I like wearing blue dresses the most."
Hearing this, Jiang An’s eyes widened in shock, and as she looked at Song Xin’s smirking face, Song Xin turned away from Jiang An’s gaze, calling over a clerk and declaring she would take the dress she was wearing.
Jiang An still stood there without moving, seemingly still stunned by Song Xin’s previous words.
Obviously, Song Xin had successfully played yet another trick in front of her.
Even if what the woman said wasn’t the truth, it still struck her squarely.
Xia Zi walked up to the stunned Jiang An and patted her shoulder, "What are you so engrossed in thinking about?"
"Who was that woman just now?" Xia Zi asked curiously, only catching a glimpse of the woman’s departing figure.
By the time Jiang An regained her senses and told Xia Zi about the rivalry between the two, the girl was unsurprisingly flabbergasted.
So they were romantic rivals?
To put it more bluntly, Song Xin had abruptly insinuated herself into her marriage with Dr. Gao.
Thinking back to how she had admired Gao Chuan just before, Xia Zi was now full of indignation, and the forthright girl blurted out cursing, "I can’t believe Dr. Gao is such a scumbag."
Hearing Xia Zi say this, Jiang An quickly interjected to defend him: "No, I still don’t know what Dr. Gao’s attitude towards Song Xin is."
"That’s still a scumbag, now that you mention it, I remember Song Xin and Gao Chuan were both from our school in the same cohort, a school hunk and a school beauty. I even saw rumors about the two in school when I was surfing," recalled Xia Zi.
"Really, I always thought it was fake so I didn’t tell you, I didn’t expect even after the god got married this woman would still linger like a bad spirit," Xia Zi rolled her eyes, oblivious to the fact that Jiang An’s complexion subtly darkened beside her because of her words.
So... are all those so-called gossips true?
Are the two of them really old lovers rekindling the old flame?
What does that make her, then?
Noticing Jiang An’s dejected expression, Xia Zi, who could not stand to see the girl aggrieved, spoke up angrily, "No, you can’t let her outdo you like this, let’s buy this dress, I’ll go pay for it."
And with that, she headed to the counter, swiping her card with swift movements and then turned back to say to Jiang An, "Jiang An, let me tell you, you have to fight for the things you like. How do you know they are not meant for you?"
Be it clothes, or a man.
