Chapter 170 Celebrating Dr. Gao’s Birthday
Song Xin didn’t return to the office until the afternoon. Jiang An carried on with her tasks as usual, as if nothing had happened, and the awkward moment from the morning went unmentioned between them.
In the afternoon, just before closing time, Song Xin took Jiang An with her on rounds. Jiang An was responsible for recording the recovery of the patients as they walked behind Song Xin. The pair, one in front of the other, stepped out from the ward as Song Xin began to explain the patient conditions that needed extra attention in the coming days.
The girl followed closely behind, listening intently. Almost at the end of the briefing, Jiang An planned to leave but Song Xin stopped her. The woman slid her hands into the pockets of her white lab coat, eyes landing on Jiang An, "By the way, Jiang An, you know that Gao Chuan has his birthday this Sunday, right?"
At the sound of her words, Jiang An’s steps faltered and she turned back to look at Song Xin, who wore a placid smile. A sudden jolt hit Jiang An’s heart.
Song Xin saw her bewildered expression and a smile with an unclear meaning curved up the corners of her mouth. Without waiting for Jiang An to answer, she said directly: "Our group usually gets together for such occasions. Why don’t you come too? Gao Chuan will definitely be happy."
Since Song Xin had extended the invitation, all she could do was accept.
Jiang An turned back to her office but continued to be engrossed in thought as if someone had bewitched her, her face burning hot as if someone had slapped her.
What a lousy wife she was, not even knowing her husband’s birthday after more than half a year of marriage.
A wave of self-reproach washed over the girl, and on her way home, she sent Ji Wanwan a WeChat message.
Jiang An: Dr. Gao’s birthday is this Sunday. Dr. Song invited me to go and hang out with them.
Soon, she received a reply.
Ji Wanwan: Then go, it’s a good chance to claim your territory.
Ji Wanwan: Make sure you dress up beautifully to astound everyone.
Jiang An leaned her head tiredly against the car window, her light brown eyes reflecting the brilliant night scene outside, and her thoughts suddenly deepened.
She kept saying she wanted to be a good wife, she kept saying she wanted to spend her life with Dr. Gao, yet she didn’t even know Gao Chuan’s birthday.
And what about Song Xin? She grew up with Gao Chuan and even chose to enter the field of medicine just for Dr. Gao. What had she ever contributed in comparison?
To Song Xin, she was like an evil interloper who had cut in halfway.
Emotions surged in her heart, and Jiang An rallied herself.
This was the first birthday celebration for Dr. Gao since she had met him, and she was determined to prepare well.
The girl scrolled through her phone to see the message from Ji Wanwan and typed back.
Jiang An: I’m thinking about what gift to give Dr. Gao.
Ji Wanwan: A watch? A tie? A set of drinking accessories?
Ji Wanwan: But your dear Dr. Gao probably lacks none of these.
Jiang An looked at the replies and frowned.
Indeed, a man of Dr. Gao’s stature would lack for nothing. So what would be a good present?
Wanwan: Why don’t you just wrap yourself up and give yourself to him as a gift?
Wanwan: He might actually like that.
Jiang An, blushing at the phone screen, saw that Wanwan also couldn’t come up with any good ideas and had to figure it out herself. She began to search online for "birthday gifts for men."
In the end, she realized these were just ordinary suggestions, typically involving luxury brands, far out of reach for an intern with a salary less than three thousand a month.
As she was pondering without a solution, her car had already arrived at the entrance of the residential complex. Jiang An paid the fare and got out, her mind still scheming how to prepare a surprise and thoughtful gift for Gao Chuan. Just as she was about to step into the elevator, she felt something tripping her up underfoot.
Looking down, the girl saw a small Labrador who had cozied up around her feet, it was sticking out its tongue at Jiang An.
Jiang An has always adored animals since she was young. She slowly crouched down to pet the little Labrador on its head and said sweetly, "Oh my, where did you come from, cutie?"
The little Labrador seemed to be very comfortable under her touch, shaking its little head and wagging its tail.
"It’s so late, why haven’t you gone home yet? Where is your owner?" Jiang An asked softly, finding the little fellow’s appearance irresistibly cute, feeling her heart melting away.
However, the little guy didn’t seem to offer any clues for going home, just humming around her, looking excited.
Jiang An looked around and saw no one in sight, thinking that the residents must be getting ready to sleep at this late hour. She hesitated for a moment, then decided to take the dog home first and ask the property management to help find its owner tomorrow.
Gao Chuan, who had been busy for several days straight, was only allowed to go home to rest in the afternoon. The man slept until eight o’clock in the evening and was concerned why Jiang An hadn’t returned yet when he heard noises at the door.
The man, just out of the bath, rose from the sofa and walked towards the entrance, hearing "woof woof" before he got there.
With a frown, he walked over and indeed saw Jiang An, in the middle of changing her shoes, beckoning and calling gently to a golden Labrador outside the door, "Little guy, come on in."
Yet, the little Labrador just hopped around at the entrance, as if still evaluating something, barking inquisitively.
Having changed shoes, Jiang An had no choice but to walk to the door and pick up the little fellow, coaxing it like a mother: "Oh, it’s okay to come in."
She had not taken many steps inside when she saw Gao Chuan standing not far away. The man was draped in a pure black bathrobe, staring straight at the scene in front of him—a person and a dog—with an expression that flickered between shadow and light.
Jiang An’s mind went "boom," as she had only thought to bring the little dog home first, forgetting there was another living person in the house.
"Dr. Gao, let me explain..." Jiang An, holding the little dog that continued to act out in her arms, awkwardly flashed a smile.
After explaining the whole story, Jiang An petted the little one’s head in her arms and pleaded softly, "I was thinking of letting it stay at home for just one night, and then I’ll notify the property management to find its owner tomorrow."
"The dog looks so clean; it must have accidentally run off from somewhere. Once we find the owner, we’ll send it back immediately." Jiang An widened her eyes, looking as pitifully adorable as the little dog in her arms.
Gao Chuan looked down at Jiang An’s beguiling facial expression and softened his brows.
"Please, please, please, Dr. Gao," Jiang An approached the man and, holding the dog, started to rub against Gao Chuan’s arm.
Gao Chuan could never resist Jiang An’s coquetry, feeling a ticklish sensation in his heart, his ears tinted with a blush.
The man cleared his throat and finally replied indifferently, "As you wish."
