Chapter 169: They Were Sticking Close Together

The hospital recently dispatched a delegation of doctors for research, and Dr. Gao, the associate director of this department, had been extremely busy these past few days, responsible for the medical exchange at another hospital.

It wasn’t until Thursday that he returned for the final summary speech that marked the successful conclusion of the exchange. Jiang An and three other interns were called over to participate. Due to not enough seats in the meeting room, Jiang An and Song Ya had moved two chairs from the office. By the time they arrived, the summary meeting was about to start.

The two settled down in a corner, with Gao Chuan sitting at the center of the round table, flanked by Song Xin and another doctor who had participated in the research trip.

Since Gao Chuan had been out on business for the past few days, Jiang An hadn’t seen Dr. Gao at home for three days either. The girl in the corner of the crowd slightly lifted her head, her gaze locked onto Gao Chuan, who was giving the speech. Despite working non-stop for several days, his face still did not show any signs of fatigue.

The summary conference didn’t last too long. It was mostly the doctors who had participated in the research sharing their experiences and insights. Jiang An listened attentively, taking notes in her notebook, when Song Ya suddenly nudged her arm. Jiang An looked up and saw Song Ya giving her a meaningful look.

Following Song Ya’s gaze, Gao Chuan, who was seated at the center of the round table, seemed to be discussing something with Song Xin next to him. The woman, holding a document, whispered something to Gao Chuan in full view of everyone, her body close to his.

They were sticking very close together.

Jiang An turned to look at Song Ya with surprise and noticed she was giving a gossipy look. The girl was momentarily stunned but then buried her head back into her notes.

On the surface, she remained calm, but her heart couldn’t help but beat faster.

In her mind, she kept repeating to herself that "they are just colleagues," but she couldn’t help but have misconceptions.

Ever since Ji Wanwan told her about the past between those two, it became difficult for her to stay calm whenever she saw Dr. Gao and Song Xin together.

The meeting ended with Gao Chuan’s summary, and the crowd was ready to disperse slowly. Jiang An picked up her stool and left with Song Ya. When she glanced back at the round table, she saw Song Xin standing up, smiling and talking to Gao Chuan; they seemed to be enjoying a pleasant conversation.

Feeling the slow fermentation of jealousy, Jiang An walked out of the meeting room distractedly, hearing Song Ya complaining by her side: "Did you see that? Those two are bound to go public eventually."

Song Ya, preoccupied with the gossip, probably didn’t realize that Jiang An’s heart was already on fire. The girl did her best to conceal her inner agitation and told Song Ya she had something else to do before hurriedly leaving.

After returning the chair to the office and sitting for a while, Jiang An stood up and went to the restroom. She only felt increasingly irritable, her face flushing hot, as she turned on the tap and splashed water on her face, trying to cool down.

The water droplets gently slid down the girl’s cheeks as Jiang An leaned on the washbasin, looking at herself in the mirror. Flashbacks of Gao Chuan and Song Xin’s close conversation surfaced, and the image in the mirror showed downcast eyes, followed by a surge of bitterness in her heart.

After a while, she raised her hand to slap her face forcefully, echoing inside her head, "Jiang An, snap out of it. Stop indulging in wild flights of fancy."

Several minutes later, Jiang An emerged from the washroom. As she turned away and took a few steps, a figure suddenly approached her from behind and embraced her. The familiar scent of sandalwood filled her nostrils, and she stopped in astonishment.

Gao Chuan still held her tightly from behind. Luckily, there was no one nearby. Jiang An’s face secretly flushed red. At first, she did not think of pulling away, but whispered, "Dr. Gao?"

A muffled response came from behind: "Mm."

"Are you finished with everything?" Jiang An struggled free from his grip, turning around to face the tall man before her. Seeing him up close, she noticed significant dark circles under his eyes and a weary expression on his striking face; the girl touched his face with a feeling of pity.

Gao Chuan let out a "mm," placing a hand over Jiang An’s that rested on his own face. Just as she was about to suggest he should go home and rest, Song Xin’s voice suddenly rang from behind: "Gao Chuan, hurry up, the director is waiting for us!"

On reflex, Jiang An withdrew her hand from Dr. Gao’s, and even though Song Xin already knew about their relationship, Jiang An still instinctively fled as if guilty of something.

Song Xin stood not far behind Jiang An, her eyes flashing with displeasure at the two’s ambiguous interaction.

"You go ahead with your work; I’ll see you back at home." Jiang An pushed the man in front, and before Gao Chuan could say anything, she ran away swiftly.

Only then did Gao Chuan walk towards the director’s office with Song Xin, who joked by his side, "Your little wife is quite shy."

"Jiang An must have told you already. We met last week at grandma’s house," Song Xin said, walking beside him, glancing at the exhausted look on his face.

Gao Chuan’s expression darkened slightly upon hearing this. Jiang An had not mentioned this incident to him, and he had been thinking of telling Jiang An that Song Xin already knew about their marriage. But now it seemed there was no need.

The man only gave a flat "mm" without showing much emotion.

"Same arrangements for this Sunday?" Song Xin changed the subject, asking Gao Chuan.

"My brother has already booked a place. Remember to come," she said, seemingly unwilling to allow Gao Chuan to refuse, directly instructing him.

This Sunday was Gao Chuan’s birthday, but he never had the tradition of celebrating birthdays, as his grandfather had died in an accident on the day he was born, and the family never cared much about it.

When he was younger, it was Song Li who learned of the matter, and every year on this day, he gathered friends to accompany Gao Chuan for a drink—not to celebrate, but to try to ease Gao Chuan’s distress.

Song Xin had been abroad for six years, but this custom had not been broken.

Gao Chuan was taken aback; he had almost forgotten that this Sunday was his birthday, responding nonchalantly to Song Xin’s reminder, "I know."

His birthday was always the day he least wanted to confront, as on this day, his birth nearly claimed two lives.

The Gao Family never celebrated his birthday—he suspected they might wish he had never been born.

Seeing the man agree, Song Xin’s lips curved into a smile as she followed him into the director’s office.
