Chapter 15: Chapter 14 Practice Calling Husband

Jiang An might never forget this day.

October 16th, it rained a light drizzle. After replying to Gao Chuan’s message, Jiang An returned to bed hoping to catch some more sleep, but the moment the wind blew in, the room was filled with the scent of flowers and earth.

Lazily tossing and turning, she eventually wrapped herself up in the quilt, yet her gaze couldn’t resist drifting back to the phone screen flooded with brief texts.

In the WeChat conversation, lines of white and green intersected, with every message piercing deeply into Jiang An’s tender heart.

In the end, she couldn’t fall back asleep. Roughly an hour later, seeing her reflection in the mirror with layers of dark circles under her eyes, she started brushing her teeth and washing her face. Before the foam around her mouth was wiped clean, the distinctive ringtone of her phone echoed from the bedroom.

She scrambled in her slippers and reached for the phone buried in the blankets, finding the contact labeled "Dr. Gao" and hastily picking up with a weak voice: "Hello?"

Gao Chuan’s genuinely Honest voice came through the cold line into Jiang An’s ear: "Are you still at home?"

Jiang An was slightly startled and responded with a "Hmm".

"Open the door for me."

Once Jiang An heard Gao Chuan’s words, she fully awoke, rubbing her bleary eyes, and turned to see her own frizzy hair and the childish bear pajamas with some annoyance, not realizing she had already approached the door.

Gao Chuan was still dressed in a neat suit, waiting for the girl to finally open the door, when a little brown bear peeked out and called, "Dr. Gao?"

Gao Chuan paused in place, seemingly not intending to enter, just standing by the door and glancing down at his watch, "Can you give me twenty minutes? Let’s go downstairs after and register our marriage."

Jiang An: "..."

The sky continued to sprinkle with light rain, as if the man had gotten a bit wet on his way over, his hair tips slightly damp, his charming gaze landing on Jiang An, his vision blurred.

Still drowsy from the morning, Gao Chuan saw Jiang An still standing there dumbfoundedly, the corners of his mouth hooked up slightly, then he suddenly approached, reached out his hand to touch the girl’s head, more skilfully than the last time.

"What are you dazing about for? I’ll wait for you in the car downstairs." The man gently caressed her a few times and then quickly left, his gentle voice almost making Jiang An explode on the spot.

There is always such a person, you’ve never met them before, but in a certain moment, their every glance, every move, every word can stir all the feelings in your heart.

The pattering light rain finally stopped at noon, and Gao Chuan, accompanied by Jiang An, came out of the Civil Affairs Bureau with their marriage certificate by twelve o’clock. The entire way, Jiang An was in a daze, secretly staring at the little red book in her hands that still retained a bit of warmth, feeling somewhat incredulous.

She had just gotten married, she, twenty-four years old this year, had actually already become a married woman.

The car stopped at the entrance of a residential community, and as Jiang An was still lost in her bewildered emotions, Gao Chuan had already turned off the car and stuffed his own marriage certificate into her hand, "You can also hold onto mine."

Jiang An obediently received it and put it in her bag. The next second, Gao Chuan had already walked around to her side of the car to help her open the door, "We are..."

Gao Chuan locked the car, taking out a big pile of gifts from the trunk, "My grandmother lives here to rest, let’s go see her together."

Jiang An, after hearing the man’s words, belatedly started to panic, beginning to remember the mission of their marriage, looking at Gao Chuan who had already walked a few steps ahead, she quickened her pace to catch up, chattering about all the preferences and things to note about Gao Chuan’s grandmother.

All the way asking, Gao Chuan patiently answered her a few words, looking back at her flustered appearance, she really resembled a little rabbit.

"I’m dressed too childishly today, I should’ve changed my clothes, what color does grandma like?" Jiang An looked down at her plain white dress, speaking with regret.

In fact, Jiang An was only twenty-four, and Gao Chuan was already thirty-one. Gao Chuan liked to wear suits on weekdays, and the two of them standing together may be mistaken for father and daughter.

"Also, I haven’t prepared a gift for grandma, Dr. Gao, how about next time? Tomorrow is fine, I don’t have class tomorrow..." Jiang An continued to nag from behind, unaware that Gao Chuan had already stopped.

Jiang An didn’t pay attention and bumped into the man’s sturdy chest, feeling a slight pain.

Gao Chuan turned around and looked directly at the girl who had finally stopped talking, under the soft light after the rain, her pale cheeks were blushing, and her neatly dressed skirt fluttered in the breeze.

"Jiang An, you don’t need to be nervous. Just seeing you, grandma will be very happy." Gao Chuan looked down at the girl who was a head shorter than himself, realizing she was always that unconfident ostrich, always doubtful about her own abilities.

"And we’re married now, you should change the way you address me." Gao Chuan continued seriously.

Jiang An unconsciously lowered her head, her face burning.

"You should start calling me husband." Gao Chuan declared emotionlessly, and Jiang An’s face was as red as if it had been smeared in blood.

"I got it," Jiang An said in a low voice, her hands nervously clinging to her bag.

Gao Chuan didn’t seem to want to let her off easily, commanding, "Practice it now, so it won’t slip up later."

Jiang An, feeling the pressure of Gao Chuan’s glare as if he would not let her off if she didn’t comply, timidly raised her face to meet Gao Chuan’s piercing gaze, and murmured shyly, "Husband."

Her voice was as faint as a mosquito’s, but the two words were clearly heard by Gao Chuan. He looked down at Jiang An, who was timid and compliant, and something in the depths of his heart trembled, his profound eyes appearing to be scattered with starlight.

Jiang An, realizing Gao Chuan was examining her intently, felt a bout of nervous perspiration.

Gao Chuan’s lips curved into a half-smile, handing one of the gift boxes to Jiang An as if satisfied with her recent utterance of "husband," then he continued to lead the way.

Jiang An hurriedly followed the man’s rapid footsteps, her nervousness undiminished. The marigolds in the villa area were in full bloom, their pale yellow centers gently swaying, the fragrance of flowers filling the air.
