Gao Chuan’s grandmother, Jiang Jing, moved to this villa district a year ago due to serious illness stemming from her old age. The elderly lady spent most of the past year here, having just been discharged from the hospital some days ago. Her condition was deteriorating by the day.

Gao Chuan had only simply mentioned his grandmother to Jiang An in passing, and through what he said, she learned that his grandmother might not survive the year. Her greatest wish was to see him married and with children. Jiang An thought of her own mother who had passed away—she hadn’t even seen her own daughter married, leaving nothing but deep regret.

Gao Chuan led Jiang An to a courtyard. A middle-aged woman wearing an apron came to answer the doorbell. Upon seeing Gao Chuan with a girl behind him, she wore an astonished expression, "Second Young Master, you’re here."

She excitedly approached Gao Chuan, looking him up and down affectionately.

Jiang An observed the warm and kind demeanor of the elderly woman, who did not seem like someone severely ill.

"Old Madam, this time the young master has brought his wife along," Aunt Liu giggled, prompting the old lady. Gao Chuan also turned and strode over to Jiang An, suddenly putting an arm around her, and introduced, "Grandma, this is Anan. We just got our marriage certificate."

Jiang An felt the palm on her waist and politely called out "Grandma." The lady’s eyes brightened upon seeing the affectionate couple, stepping forward to take Jiang An’s hand, "Ah, so this is my granddaughter-in-law, such a beauty!"

The old lady had been bedridden for most of the month, and only recently had her condition slightly improved. "My dear child, now that you’re married, we’re all family. If you ever feel aggrieved, just come to Grandma," the old lady released Jiang An, speaking softly to comfort her before standing up to leave. "I’ll go get you something nice."

"No need," Jiang An started to say, but the old lady was already turning around, heading toward the bedroom. After the grandmother left, Gao Chuan stood up and walked over to Jiang An, placing the peeled orange in her hand, "Don’t be nervous, Grandma won’t make things difficult for you."

Jiang An stared at the orange in front of her, feeling an abrupt sting in her nose. Noticing her emotional state, Gao Chuan crouched down to see her reddened eyes and spoke with an undisturbed voice, "What’s the matter? Touched so easily?"

Jiang An looked down to see Gao Chuan’s approaching face; the man had thick brows, deep-set eyes, and dark pupils staring straight at her, causing her cheeks to turn even redder as she stammered quietly, "Grandma... is very nice!"

Gao Chuan stood up, no longer teasing her, "You won’t think so when the old lady starts to nag. And remember," he seemed to recall something and added, "whatever the old lady gives you later, just accept it." Saying this, he went upstairs, leaving Jiang An alone on the sofa. She silently broke off half an orange and put it into her mouth.

In a moment, the juice splattered in her small cherry mouth, the girl licking her lips.

It was sweet.
