Chapter 14: Chapter 13 Why Can’t It Be You

"Hmm?" Although Jiang An could hear Gao Chuan’s words clearly, she still incredulously expressed her doubt, feeling that her surprise was somewhat excessive.

"You said you wanted to repay me, right? The only way you can do that now is to marry me. I really need a marriage partner right now." Gao Chuan didn’t make a move to open the car door, and the cramped space was still filled with silence from the two of them.

"You must have heard from my mom about my grandmother’s serious illness; I don’t want the old lady to have any regrets in her last half-year." The man took his hands off the steering wheel and turned his gaze to the girl sitting upright beside him, his eyes gradually darkening.

"Just for half a year, I’m just asking for a favor. I don’t want to force you, you have the right to reject me."

"Jiang An, I’m not joking with you. I want you to think it over seriously. I want your answer within three days." The man’s magnetic voice broke the awkward silence; Jiang An still had a stunned look, waiting for Gao Chuan to open the car door and tell her to get out.

Jiang An listlessly went upstairs, turned on the lights in the room— the dim light enveloped her figure. She walked into the bathroom wanting to take a shower to calm down, but, to her dismay, found out that there was no hot water in the house due to long disuse. Dispirited, the girl changed into her pajamas and lay down on the bed.

Her mind was blank as she tried hard to recall everything that had happened during the day and thought about what Gao Chuan had said to her.

This was an illogical request. As Gao Chuan had said, being thirty-one years old now, he eagerly needed a marriage partner, someone to comfort his gravely ill elder. But why her?

Why her? Why not someone else? She was obviously such an inadequate person.

She wasn’t worthy of him, that was the first thought Jiang An had about Dr. Gao after she started having feelings for him. She was just an ordinary college student in this city, utterly alone after her mother’s death, while he was a golden bachelor with both family and career deemed perfect. This disparity had rooted deeply in some unknown corner of her heart.

But she really wanted someone to accompany her to continue living in this city. She was so lonely. Today, being pulled to his home by Shen Mei, Jiang An was completely baffled, initially expecting a battle, but after spending a brief half-day together, she realized how tender Gao Chuan’s parents were. They didn’t scorn her for being younger, and Shen Mei, holding her hand, kept chatting away, relentlessly asking what she liked to eat. The usually stern Gao Lin even reminded her of her father who had died early in her life.

That feeling of being with family was really nice.

The night was long, and Jiang An tossed and turned, unable to sleep.

Just when she thought she couldn’t understand it, the screen of the mobile phone beside the pillow suddenly lit up; she turned over and unlocked it to check WeChat.

Gao Chuan: Are you asleep?

Seeing the simple message made her heart beat intensely; the girl sat up on the bed, her fingers nervously fumbling, her actions eventually calming down.

Jiang An: Not yet.

A few seconds later, the chat box flashed again.

Gao Chuan: Have you decided?

Jiang An completely panicked, her movements erratic as she tiptoed.

Fresh out of the shower, Gao Chuan took out a bottle of vintage red wine that Gao Yu had brought over a few days ago, poured himself a glass, and was savoring it when he received a message from Jiang An, causing him to pause momentarily.

Jiang An: Dr. Gao, why me?

The sweetness on his tongue slowly spread; Gao Chuan picked up the wineglass on the table, lingeringly drained it, the purple-red liquid sliding down his throat, leaving a slight chill.

Looking down, he saw the flashing message on his phone screen. The man’s lips pressed into a line, the taste of the wine still lingering on his tongue, he raised his eyes to the pitch-black window outside.

Why her? Why did he specifically choose her? Perhaps that was his question as well.

She was a completely ordinary girl; her looks were passable but not stunning, with hardly any family background worth mentioning, not to mention she was a relative of his patient. Among the potential partners he had met, Jiang An wouldn’t even rank; he had no reason to fall for such an inconspicuous girl.

But indeed, she was the most suitable candidate for a flash marriage so far, the powerless girl needing shelter in this big city. Most importantly, she was simple, whether it was her family or her résumé, a pure blank slate, unlikely to cause much trouble or entanglement due to their brief marriage, which he was very much hoping for.

Another reason was, he didn’t dislike her, being with her gave him a sense of ease he’d never felt before.

He had never thought to create a variable in his life; for him, who had been single for so many years, marriage had already become a trivial matter. Since marriage’s purpose was for his grandmother, then it didn’t matter who the woman specifically was to him.

The man made a bet with himself, a bet that could allow both of them to walk away unscathed.

Jiang An looked at the message she had sent, hesitating whether to retract it, but a reply had already come back.

Gao Chuan: Why can’t it be you?

The pale blue curtains fluttered lightly with the evening breeze, slivers of moonlight creeping through the window grills into the room. Jiang An lay on the soft bed, immersed in a whole square of moonlight.

Gao Chuan: Go to sleep early, good night.

At eight o’clock in the morning, the alarm went off punctually. Gao Chuan lazily sat up from the bed, his messy hair casually hanging over his forehead. The man got out of bed and put on his slippers; last night’s red wine was still on the table, he went over to pick up the glass, bending down as the phone on the table vibrated.

He lightly pressed the unlock button, and the WeChat interface popped up.

Two brief messages, one from last night, one from just now.

Jiang An: Good night.

Jiang An: Dr. Gao, I’ve made up my mind.

Gao Chuan: ?

The "thump thump" sound came from his heart, and the man gripped the cup in his hand tightly.

The next second, a reply from the girl came back.

Jiang An: Let’s get married.
