Chapter 43: He Does Love Her

Ravenna rarely had any sleep that night. All kind of nightmares would cut short her slumber and leave her traumatized to even close her eyes. But what took her aback was one nightmare, which was the last one before she decided not to sleep a wink again.

She was in a dark closed room wearing a black dress and her face was covered with a veil. In that nightmare, she seemed so different because not once had she ever worn such kind of gowns. She seemed noble and elegant but the look on her face was full of unhidden pain and fear. On her hands, she held a silver blade and it seemed as if she was about to kill but before she could do it, someone came from behind and gouged out her heart. She froze in place for a few seconds before she fell to the ground. With the last of her breath, she saw Alaric’s face, while holding her heart in his hand then she... died.

Inhaling heavily, she tried to calm herself down but that disturbing picture never left her mind even for once. Though it was nightmare, Ravenna could feel the pain emotionally and even her heart ached as if really had experienced such kind of fate before.

"I need to leave. I... have to, right now." She looked haggard from her hair to her clothes. Her eyes had dark circles and were even swollen.

She took a step towards the bathroom but fell on her knees when that sudden pain crossed her heart again. She could feel it. It was the mate bond that was holding her back and make her experience such agony that she never knew existed, the moment she thought of leaving her mate. It happened to her since she woke up from that awful nightmare and anytime she tried to think of breaking her relationship with Alaric, the pain would increase and keep on going until she could not breath anymore. Only when she got rid of those thought and immerse herself in her memories with Alaric would she feel much better.

"Why won’t it stop? I don’t... wish to die by his hands, please." Tears filled her eyes while the pain got worse and she ended lying on ground crouching on her chest.

She had experienced separation from her family once and it wasn’t this painful. What she felt was more than heartbreak- despair and incomparable agony that would kill her.

"Alaric, one way or... the other, you are going to be the death... of me." She said painful, laughter in between her statement then resigned to fate. "I can never escape from you."

She turned and laid on her back, staring at the ceiling blankly, remembering all the sweet and heated moments she had with Alaric. Their first meeting when he crashed into her hotel room, their first kiss, all the silly arguments, when she realized her feelings for him and the restlessness she felt, and then the accident, which was the genesis of all revelations.

How much she wished to have never regained her memory. Everything had consequences and the price she had to pay was to lose her new-found family. Finn, Zander, sweet cutie pie Luke, the asshole Zeke and most especially, her mate, Alaric.

Ravenna bit her lip before she let out a yell that was full every hurtful emotions that couldn’t stop coming. She was alone once again. Maybe this was he fate, forever doomed to be alone.

"Why me?" She muttered as if she was asking someone. "I don’t want to... go."

"Where are you going?" Ravenna thought she was hearing Alaric’s voice in her head again and did not move from where she was let alone be surprised.

"I have to or else..." She paused, choked by emotions and tears.

"Or else what?" This time his voice was low and soft.

"Else he will kill me." Ravenna completed wiping off the tears stains on her face. "Do you know, for some unknown reason am really scared of dying. If I continue staying here then I will and if I leave, I also will. What should I do?"

Alaric who was standing by the door side frowned deeply at her words. So, all this while she thought he was going to kill her? Looking at her small figure lying on the floor crying silently, he felt like his heart was being pricked with sharp needles. He didn’t want to see her tears. He loved every part and character of hers but not this one, he didn’t want his Ravenna to be weak.

"I won’t let anything happen to you." He vowed to himself, and took a step forward.

Meanwhile, Ravenna was yet to realize that Alaric was there for real and it was not her fragment of imagination. Nevertheless, she continued, "I know but what am scared of is none other than you. Will you be able to protect me from yourself?" Tears flowed from the corner of her eyes, and she closed them trying to hold them back.

"I will if I have to." Alaric said walking closer to her.

"Why? Do you love me?" Ravenna questioned still in that state.

Alaric went quiet and his movement stopped. Did he love her? His answer was yes. He loved her more than he could explain. Not that he was planning to ever say it loud to her. He would try as much to express it in actions but love was not something he could fully embrace, not even with her. That was something he had vowed to himself and still reminded himself of it till date.

"What do you think?" That was all he could think of to avoid her question.

Ravenna chuckled her eyes still closed, then she replied, "I think that you also love me but not as much as I do. I may have a space in your heart but not that big. Am important but not that significant."

"Why do you say that?" Alaric knew there was some truth in her words. His heart had been shut for centuries and opening it to someone was not easy for him. And now, he had just realized she was from the wolf clan and to add to it, an Alpha’s daughter. Even if he was willing to trust her, there was still a part of him that still doubted her.

"I just know. I can see it." She added a half smile lifting on her lips. "Am afraid that one day will come and you’ll know my truth. If it happens, then..." Ravenna did not complete her statement.

"I would kill you? Is that what you mean?" Alaric completed squatting above her head.

"Yes. Am really scared of dying, especially by your hands." With a sigh, she opened her eyes only to see the man staring at her unblinkingly. "Now I’ve started seeing you after haunting me in my dreams all night. What next? Will you follow me everywhere if I decide to leave?" She smiled and chuckled at her own joke before turning and laid on her stomach, her head lifted in order to face Alaric.

"I’ll follow you no matter where you go and bring you back."

"Really?" She asked in disbelief then shook her head in disagreement. "Alaric would never do that. He’s too egoistic. I think I like the you in my mind. Never has that ice cube said such heart-warming words let alone expressing what he feels for me. Don’t you think am a fool for loving such kind of a person? But it’s not entirely my fault, he’s my destined..."

Before she could complete her statement, Alaric held her chin glaring at her. "Am egoistic? Is that what you tell others behind my back? And Ice cube?... What a name, sweetheart. "

Ravenna eyes went wide open as realization hit her that Alaric was there in reality. "You... When... did you come?... I mean I didn’t..." Words got stuck in her mouth as fear gripped her heart wondering if Alaric had figured out something in between her talks.

"Are you planning to run away from me?" He asked coldly pinching her chin.

Ravenna swallowed nervously and she shook her head slowly unsure if he would even believe her lie. "Who... who said that?"

"Didn’t you just ask if I’ll follow you if you decide to leave?"

Ravenna could not answer and just looked at Alaric pleadingly. "I didn’t mean it. I was just saying it like that."

"Really?" Alaric asked narrowing his eyes at her. "If it wasn’t so, then why did you want to break up with me last night?" Ravenna could not answer that either and just remained silent biting her lower lip to restrain tears from flowing out. "Do you think I would really kill you?" He rubbed her cheek with his other hand before placing a peck on her lips.
