Chapter 99: Jaegel[3]

Chapter 99: Jaegel[3]

Rex’s breath hitched in his throat.

His body froze, his mind struggling to process the sheer horror of the moment.

Jaegel was still alive.

His final attack—his strongest attack—had done nothing.

A cold sweat ran down the side of his face. His muscles locked up, his instincts screaming at him to run, but he couldn’t.

He didn’t have the strength.

Still, he forced himself to move.

Slowly—painfully slowly—he turned his head, using every last ounce of energy left in him.

His neck ached, his bones groaning in protest.

And then—

His gaze met Jaegel’s.

The heretic stood over him, arms folded behind his back, his thin lips curled into a smug smirk.

His slitted eyes glowed dimly in the darkness, their eerie light sending a chill down Rex’s spine.

Jaegel’s chuckle slithered through the air, low and venomous.

A disgusting trail of spittle dripped from his unnaturally long tongue, splattering against the floor as he let out a raspy, mocking laugh.

"You... you probably thought you had me, didn’t you?" he sneered, his voice oozing amusement.

His shoulders shook, his laughter growing louder.

Rex felt a sharp pang of humiliation twist in his gut.

Jaegel continued, his tone dripping with mockery.

"Didn’t that just prove my point?" He spread his arms out, grinning. "You really are the failure of the Silvagold name."

Rage flared inside Rex.

That word again.

That damned word.

Failure, Untalented, Disappointing.

He couldn’t remember how many times he had heard those words, whether in the academy or outside of it.

Even when he was just walking, he could sometimes hear the whispers of people, comparing him to his sister, and father.

Talks of how underwhelming his ability was compared to that.

They might not say it directly to his face, but he knew that was the first thing that appeared in anyone’s mind whenever they saw him.

And the worst part of it was, whenever he tried to prove how wrong they were, all he seemed to do was the opposite.

His blood boiled, fury igniting within him like a raging inferno.

His fingers twitched, his body screaming in pain—

But still, he tried to push himself up.

In order to right, to do something... just anything.

But—

His body failed him.

The moment he attempted to rise, his limbs gave out beneath him, and he collapsed face-first onto the cold, damp ground.

His chest heaved, his breath coming out in sharp gasps.

’Come on! Move!’ He screamed at himself. ’You can’t just accept what he said... you can’t.’

He clenched his teeth, desperately trying to summon even the smallest flicker of mana.

Anything.

Just enough for one more attack.

Unfortunately, he got nothing, not even a single spark.

He was completely powerful, and all he could do was watch helplessly as Jaegel’s twisted laughter filled the air.

"Pathetic."

Rex’s vision blurred, his hands trembling with frustration.

His eyes turned bloodshot, a mix of anger, pain, and humiliation bubbling up inside him.

Jaegel stepped forward, looming over him like a predator standing over its broken prey.

Then—

SQUELCH.

A disgusting, wet sound echoed as Jaegel pressed his boot against Rex’s cheek, grinding it into the dirt.

"Gghh—!" Rex grunted in pain, his jaw clenching as the heretic’s heel dug into his skin.

A foul, slimy substance smeared across his face, its putrid stench assaulting his senses.

Rex felt his stomach churn.

’What the hell...?’ He thought, a wave of disgust surging through him.

What kind of horrors had this bastard stepped in before pressing his filthy boot against his face?

The very thought made his skin crawl.

"T-Take your foot off me!" Rex snapped, his voice raw with annoyance.

Jaegel merely tilted his head, his smirk widening.

He found Rex’s struggles amusing.

"Oh? And what exactly is the failure of the Silvagold house gonna do about it?" He taunted.

Then, he pressed down harder.

"GHHH—!"

Rex hissed, pain flaring through his skull.

His fingers dug into the ground, his nails scraping against the rough dirt.

Though he hated to admit it, he knew the bastard was right.

However, he wondered within him, if it were Emma in this situation...

Would she have put up a better fight?

Would she have done more?

A bitter realization washed over him.

Maybe everyone else was right all along, and he was indeed the failure of Silvagold.

His expression crumbled.

A strange emptiness settled in his chest.

Maybe if he died here, it wouldn’t even matter.

Maybe...

That would be for the best.

It’s not like his life was worth anything anyway.

Jaegel let out a snort, his foot still planted firmly against Rex’s cheek.

Then—

His smirk faltered.

He narrowed his eyes, his tongue flicking out for a moment before retracting back into his mouth.

He could sense it.

The defiance in Rex’s eyes had dimmed.

His spirit was breaking, and it only annoyed him.

Jaegel clicked his tongue in disappointment.

"Giving up already?"

His lips curled, a dangerous glint flashing in his eyes.

"Tch. And here I thought you’d at least struggle a bit more."

He let out a long, exaggerated sigh.

Breaking people was fun.

Watching them squirm, cry, and resist before finally losing hope was what he lived for.

But breaking Rex was too easy, almost like snapping paper.

Jaegel rolled his shoulders, shaking his head.

’He showed potential before, guess I was wrong.’ He thought, sighing.

"Tch. Breaking someone who’s already broken is kinda boring, you know?"

He let out a low chuckle.

Even for a twisted asshole like him, this was unsatisfying.

Still—

He wasn’t done yet.

He still had plans for this pathetic noble.

Jaegel stepped back, finally removing his boot from Rex’s face.

Rex didn’t even react.

He could feel that his face was smeared with something disgusting, probably faeces, but he simply laid there, not moving an inch.

Jaegel stretched, rolling his neck from side to side.

Then, he grinned.

"Heh. Whatever. Just stay here and suffer."

He turned his back to Rex, shoving his hands into his pockets.

Then—

He hissed loudly, rubbing a hand against his bald head.

"No one’s coming to save you."

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"So just rot here... and die."

A cold glint flashed in his eyes as he walked away, his figure slowly disappearing into the endless darkness.
