Chapter 74: The village of Willowbrook
He crossed his arms, his smirk never leaving his lips as he continued observing her, eager to see what kind of person Emerald truly was.
’Eye of tru—’
Before he could fully activate the skill, the knight suddenly turned to him, her brows knitted into a frown.
’What?!’ Liam thought, his eyes widening slightly.
However, the woman’s gaze soon diverted from him, scanning across the students.
Liam’s eyes narrowed slightly, finding something strange with how she glanced at him.
’Did she somehow... sense me using my skill?’ He couldn’t help but wonder, his gaze lingering on the woman.
Though it could be that what happened was just a coincidence and nothing more, Liam doubted it.
The way she glanced at him was quite suspicious, almost as if she could tell he was trying to scan her strength.
Even Tenny, the priest didn’t sense when he activated Eye of truth.
’Interesting...’ He thought, a strange glint twinkling in his eyes.
The situation only made his curiosity grow even more, but for now, he controlled himself.
After giving her speech on the mission, the knight suddenly turned around, heading back into the church.
She came back a few minutes later, but this time, she wasn’t putting on her armour.
She was dressed in a long pale blue gown, which flowed down to her feet.
However, even the gown failed to hide her curves, and her busty chest pushed through the thin material of the gown, forming a cleavage.
Even though she was putting on a simple dress, her beauty didn’t diminish in the slightest.
’She really is... beautiful.’ Liam thought, the edges of his lips curling up slightly.
He wasn’t the only one who thought this way, as the eyes of everyone in their group—most especially the guys, were practically glued onto her.
"She’s so beautiful..." He heard Mike matter, Rex nodding alongside him.
’But then, why appear in an armour when you’ll eventually take it off?’ Liam muttered inwardly, a slight smile spreading across his face.
The knight however, simply ignored all their comments, walking back to the front of her group.
"Discussions are over, we’ll be moving now." She said, stretching her hand.
The students’ eyes widened slightly, wondering just what she was trying to do.
Suddenly, light sparkles started flickering in the air, rapidly growing with each passing second.
The tiny sparkles quickly merged together, forming a large, golden portal.
"Woah..." The students mumbled in awe at the sight, their jaws dropping in shock.
Apart from her service and devotion to the goddess, there was another reason Emerald was chosen to be their guide for this mission, and that was because of her blessing.
With the power to teleport to any location, her blessing was very valuable to the church, and very much the most capable for missions like this.
’So that’s it... her blessing.’ Liam thoughts, staring at the bright golden portal with widened eyes.
Now witnessing her power, he understood how she was able to quickly rise in position and become a five star knight.
’An Epic grade blessing.’ He thought.
Without needing any one to tell him, he could already tell from the power radiating from the portal.
"Step into the portal one by one, I’ll enter last." Emerald said.
Despite her continuously channeling her power into the portal, there was no sign of fatigue on her face, which spoke volumes of her control over her magic power.
The students hesitated for a brief moment before stepping into the glowing golden portal. Its radiant light shimmered like liquid gold, casting dancing reflections across the stone pavement beneath their feet.
Mike was the first to enter. His body tensed as he stepped forward, but the moment he fully passed through, he vanished into thin air.
"Woah..." he muttered, his voice echoing faintly from the other side.
The rest of the group quickly followed. Elsa stepped in next, then her two friends, their expressions a mix of excitement and nervousness.
Liam, standing beside Emma, observed the portal closely. He could feel the immense power radiating from it, a testament to the strength of Emerald’s blessing. It was an Epic-grade blessing, after all. The sheer energy it exuded was nothing to scoff at.
Emma let out a breath and stepped in. Liam was the last among the students to go through. He walked forward without hesitation, allowing the golden light to consume him.
A strange tingling sensation washed over his body. It wasn’t painful or uncomfortable—just an odd, fleeting feeling, like a warm gust of wind brushing against his skin. Within moments, the world around him changed.
When he opened his eyes, he found himself standing inside a massive cave.
The walls stretched high, their jagged surfaces covered in moss and glowing fungi that emitted a faint blue hue. The air was damp, carrying the scent of earth and stone. Stalactites hung from the ceiling like fangs, and small droplets of water occasionally fell from them, creating rhythmic echoes throughout the cavern.
The light from the portal bathed everything in gold, making the eerie cave appear almost majestic.
Mike was already looking around in awe, his wide eyes darting across the cavernous space. Elsa stood a few feet away, arms crossed, while her two friends whispered among themselves.
Liam took a moment to observe his own body. Apart from the brief tingling, he didn’t feel anything strange. There was no dizziness, no sense of displacement.
’Such a handy blessing...’ He thought. With an ability like this, long and tiring journeys would be a thing of the past. No wonder Emerald had been promoted so quickly among the holy knights.
A second later, the golden portal flickered, then Emerald emerged.
Her expression remained cold and unreadable as she scanned the group. Her long, pale blue dress still clung to her figure, emphasizing the curves her armor had previously concealed. Even in the dim cave, her presence was commanding.
The moment she ensured everyone had arrived safely, she raised her right hand and snapped her fingers.
Snap!
The golden portal behind her instantly shattered, its radiance disappearing like shards of broken light. The cavern was now significantly darker, with only the dim glow of fungi providing visibility.
Liam’s gaze lingered on Emerald, his curiosity about her only deepening.
Even though the portal had vanished, there was no trace of fatigue on her face. Channeling that much power should have drained at least a portion of her magic, but she stood as composed as ever.
’Her control over her magic is impressive.’
Tenny had chosen her as their guide for a reason. Not only was she powerful, but she was also incredibly skilled at managing her abilities.
Emerald turned to face the group. Her voice was crisp and commanding.
"We are now in a designated safe zone. This cave was mapped out long ago to serve as an entry point."
"The portal is far too bright to be used in open areas, as it would attract unnecessary attention," She explained.
"If we were to appear in the middle of a village, the heretics would immediately be aware of our arrival. That would render this entire mission useless."
Liam nodded to himself. It made sense. The church clearly had experience handling these kinds of operations.
Emerald continued, "Before we move out, I will brief you on the mission details once again."
She lifted her hand, and a faint light flickered around her palm. The dim cave brightened slightly as her magic spread throughout the space, illuminating the students’ faces.
"For this mission, we will be divided into three groups. Five people in each team, and I will move alone."
A murmur passed through the students.
"Alone?" Mike muttered, exchanging glances with Rex.
Emerald’s expression didn’t change. "I do not require assistance. Your job is to follow the plan, not question it."
That immediately silenced them.
Liam smirked slightly. ’She’s strict.’
Emerald gestured toward the students. "Now, I will divide the teams."
The students straightened their backs, listening attentively.
"Team One," She began. "Liam, Emma, Rex, Cynthia, and Lela."
Liam raised an eyebrow. ’I didn’t expect to end up together with the Silvagold twins, but then, this should be interesting.’
His gaze flickered toward Emma, who quickly turned her head away once again She simply kept her arms crossed, but the red blush on her cheeks betrayed her no nonchalant act.
Rex on the other hand, felt a shiver run down his spine, and started biting his fingers.
’No... not with him...’ He thought, gnashing his teeth.
"Team Two: Elsa, Mike, Grace, Maria, and Anna."
Elsa’s eyes widened, briefly exchanging gazes with Grace.
As if they were both thinking the same thing, their gazes shifted to Liam, who simply flashed a smirk at them.
’This... bitch.’ They thought, their eyes drilling holes into the head of the knight.
However, there was no way for the later to read their thoughts, and she simply continued her job.
Emerald continued. "Each team will have a designated route. Our objective is to investigate the reports of heretic activity in Willowbrook."
"It is a small village with approximately two hundred residents. Lately, there have been reports of strange occurrences—missing people, unexplained deaths, and sightings of unnatural creatures."
