Chapter 135: They levelled up

But the heretics didn’t stop.

Something inside Liam broke.

His feet kicked off the ground, launching him toward the group at lightning speed.

The first cloaked figure raised his hand to counter, but he was far too slow.

Liam’s fist crashed into his chest, sending him flying backwards through a tree with a sickening crunch.

The tree immediately exploded, its bark scattered around like a shrapnel.

The heretic twitched for a few seconds, blood slowly trialing down his lips, and to eveyeone’s surprise, his body went still.

Another one moved to intercept him, forming strange black daggers around his arms—but Liam ducked low, twisted, and drove his elbow into the figure’s side.

A loud crack followed, and the man let out a wheeze as he was hurled aside.

Liam was a blur—unstoppable.

He didn’t even notice Jaegel backing away, too terrified to move.

The two heretics holding Emma tried to run. One even dared to form a dark shield around her, whispering in tongues Liam couldn’t understand.

He didn’t care.

"Tendrils of Darkness," Liam muttered, and in a blink, long, whip-like shadows burst from his back, wrapping around the man’s legs and yanking him forward.

The heretic screamed as Liam leapt forward, driving his knee into the man’s face.

Blood spurted. The shield faltered.

Emma collapsed to the ground.

Liam caught her before she hit it.

For a moment, everything stilled.

His arms trembled as he held her close, inspecting her face. Her breathing was shallow. Her lips were chapped. But she was alive.

"Emma..." he whispered, brushing her tangled hair from her eyes. "I’m here now. I’ve got you."

Meanwhile, the remaining heretics simply kept staring at him, their eyes widened in shock.

The sight of those dark tendrils jutting out of his back was etched in their mind, and it kept replaying over and over again.

’A darkness blessing... could he be, an heretic?’ They all thought, simultaneously staring at each other.

Even Jaegel was shocked, after all, he didn’t think he saw Liam use any darkness related blessing during their fight.

But still, he managed to easily overpower him, even bringing him under his command.

’Was he like me from the beginning... so why... why was he fighting against me, why isn’t he a part of the order?’ He thought, his long tongue flicking across his face.

Liam on the other hand, didn’t pay them any attention, only calling into Emma’s name.

The unconscious girl didn’t respond, but he could feel her warmth.

He turned back to the heretics, and for the first time, the figures began to draw weapons. Black blades. Cursed things. Their energy was vile—wrong.

The woman in their middle stepped forward, pointing a finger at him.

"You also possess the blessing of darkness, so why... why do you fight us?" She asked, and even though her face wasn’t visible, Liam could tell how irritated she was with him.

But then, he didn’t care.

All he knew was that they messed with Emma, and he was going to make sure they paid dearly for their actions.

"You picked the wrong girl to mess with," he growled, laying Emma gently on the ground behind him.

He slowly stood up, stretching his hand at the heretic.

Swoosh!

A large fireball immediately materialized in front of his palm, blasting towards the heretics at terrifying speed.

Their eyes widened in shock, and one of them quickly stepped forward, thrusting his hands towards the incoming attack.

Two large lightning balls surged out of his hand, rapidly approaching the fireball.

Boom!

The two attacks slammed into each other, and a powerful wave of lightning mixed with fire rippled across the forest.

A few chunks of the ground were uprooted, and even some of the trees around exploded the moment the wave touched them.

Meanwhile, the heretic stared at the aftermath of the collision, beads of sweat rolling down his face.

’He’s... so strong...’ He thought, gnashing his teeth in annoyance.

All in order to cancel out Liam’s attack, he had squandered a generous amount of his mana.

However, what shocked him the most wasn’t Liam’s strength, it was the attack itself!

Liam had launched a fireball at them, something which confused the heretics.

’Didn’t he have a darkness blessing, how come he could use fire also?!’ They thought, but no one was there to answer their question.

Liam’s lips curled into a sneer as he stared at them, taking another step forward.

The woman in front of the group, who seemed to be their leader stepped forward also.

"Who are you?" She asked, a thick, dark aura slowly swirling around her fists. "How come you can use both fire and darkness? What the hell are you?"

Liam’s eyes glinted coldly, and his gaze locked on the woman. "You don’t have to worry about that, you won’t be alive for much longer anyway."

He dashed forward again.

This time, they tried to fight back.

Two of the heretics drew out their blades, launching two powerful slash waves of darkness towards him.

’Dash!’ Liam thought, and a familiar system notification immediately appeared before him.

The speed of the slash wave’s slowed down greatly, and he swiftly dodged them, pulling out the pair of daggers at his side.

’Lightning gloves!’ Lightning rapidly crackled around his hands, and a thick glove of lightning swiftly materialised around them.

The lightning crackled, violently coursing through the blades in his hands, coating them densely.

He suddenly swung the daggers, releasing two short waves of lightning.

The attacks travelled speedily through the air, slashing through the chests of two heretics almost immediately.

Blood spurted out, and they could barely even let out a sound before collapsing on the ground.

Meanwhile, the woman quickly jumped behind the group of heretics, asking them to charge at him.

The dark aura around her fists grew stronger, along with the darkness crawling over her hands.

’Now lightning too, what the hell is he... how can he weild three elements?!’ She thought, gnashing her teeth in annoyance.

She watched as Liam decimated through her group like they were nothing but a bunch of papers, when in truth, they were actually masters and practitioners in utilizing their blessings.

Each strike of his fists sent shockwaves through the air.

His tendrils lashed out, grabbing limbs and slamming bodies into trees, into the earth, into each other.

And through it all, his brilliant red eyes never lost focus.

The heretics fell, one by one, broken and bloodied, groaning on the floor or unconscious. Some tried to crawl away.

One began muttering a teleportation chant—but Liam appeared in front of him in an instant, slamming his foot down on the man’s back, silencing him.

And then, when the show was almost over, the woman suddenly dashed at him, darkness swirling around her feet.

She appeared in front of him in an instant, swinging her fist towards his chest.

Liam’s eyes widened, as the next thing he knew, an attack was already aiming at his chest.

Bang!

Her fist slammed into his chest at terrifying speed, and a loud shockwave immediately echoed through the air.

His body was instantly sent flying, bouncing against countless trees before coming to a halt.

The woman sighed, a part of her hood already opening, revealing a feminine face with long black hair and pitch black eyes.

One of her eyes had dark lines crawling around it, which spread all through her face, messing up her beauty.

"I’ll take your dead body with me, I’m sure master will be pleased to experiment on someone who can use three elements... and more than one blessing." She said, panting heavily.

Liam’s figure was currently obscured by a thick cloud of dusts and countless shrapnels of wood, but she was sure he didn’t survive that.

There was no way he would be able to survive such an attack.

Swoosh!

While she was still trying to recover herself, a large fireball suddenly blasted from within the dusts, heading towards her at tremendous speed.

’What?!’ Her eyes widened in shock, and she immediately leapt to the side, causing the attack to fly past her.

Boom!

It hit a tree behind her, going off in a large mushroom of flames while spreading hot air through the forest.

’Such raw... power...’ She thought, swallowing a low gulp.

"That was... close." Liam’s voice echoed through the dust, and he slowly emerged, without even a scratch on his body or even his clothes.

There were a couple of black tendrils swirling around his upper, forming what seemed like a loose, living armour.

They slowly retreated back into his body, and Liam’s let out a low sigh as he stared at the notifications flashing across his eyes.

[Tendrils of Darkness level up!]

[Tendrils of Darkness now level 2!]

[Fireball Level up!]

[Fireball now level 2!]

’They levelled up, how surprising.’ He thought.

Normally, that attack could have torn through his chest, but thanks to his quick reaction, he quickly used dark tendrils to form a dense armour on his chest.

The armour absorbed a major part of the force from the attack, while his body only absorbed a minor part, which was quickly resolved by his regeneration.

The leader of the heretics kept staring at him, her eyes widened in shock.

’His mastery over darkness... had already gotten this high?’ She thought, her eyes fixed on his chest, where those tendrils had previously sprouted.

Her gaze slowly drifted to his face, and she couldn’t help but feel a slight brush creeping up her cheeks.

But she quickly shook it away, unwilling to let herself get distracted by her target’s handsome face.

’It’s not like he’ll be attracted to me anyway.’ She thought, subconsciously trialing a finger across the black marks on her face.

She could tell they had already gotten thicker, further ruining her beauty, but in return, she could feel enormous power flowing through her.
