Two notifications flashed across Liam’s vision.
And instantly—
A rush of power coursed through his body.
His muscles tensed, his limbs felt lighter, and an overwhelming burst of strength surged through him.
His grip on his dual blades tightened, the familiar weight now feeling almost effortless in his hands.
The scythes heading towards him seemed to slow down, moving like they were stuck in slow motion.
A large smirk curled on his lips as he shifted his gaze toward the incoming dark scythes.
Then—
He moved.
’Demonic Authority.’ He thought, narrowing his eyes.
His red eyes flashed, and an oppressive aura burst from his body.
The air trembled around him.
A deep crimson glow coated his form, his presence suddenly feeling far more dangerous than before.
With demonic authority active, he could now see the ’truth’ behind the attacks sent towards him.
Though they seemed just like any attack, quite a number of them were actually illusions, meant to mask the true intention of the attack.
But due to his higher authority, he could easily see through them.
Jaegel felt a shiver run down his spine again.
His skin crawled, and his single large eye twitched uncontrollably.
’What... what is this?!’ He thought, feeling that same thing he felt a few minutes ago.
A part of him wanted to step back, to flee from the fight without even looking back.
But his anger overpowered that thought almost immediately.
"Tch!" He gnashed his teeth, frustration filling his expression.
’No, don’t let him fool you!’ He thought, his eyes burning with anger.
He would not be intimidated, not by a mere student without a blessing.
He poured more power into the dark scythes, forcing them to move faster, to strike more violently.
Their black energy crackled as they came rushing toward Liam.
A confident chuckle escaped Jaegel’s lips.
There was no way Liam could dodge them now.
Not all of them.
Because—
They weren’t real.
Half of the scythes were nothing more than illusions.
Mere distractions—meant to draw Liam’s attention away from the real threat hidden beneath them.
’Just try blocking them with your sword, and you’ll die!’
Jaegel’s eye gleamed, his mind already picturing the satisfying sight of Liam being impaled.
But then—
Liam vanished.
Jaegel’s smug expression froze.
His breath hitched.
What?!
A blur of red and black shot through the air.
And before Jaegel could even react—
Liam appeared right behind him.
A low chuckle escaped Liam’s lips.
"Masking a dark bomb behind the scythes? Not a bad idea." He said, narrowing his eyes at the heretic.
Jaegel’s entire body stiffened.
His breath hitched, and for a brief moment—
His mind went blank.
That voice...
It came from behind him.
Impossible!
He snapped his head back in an instant, his single large eye widening in shock.
And there he was—
Liam stood right behind him, his red eyes gleaming under the dim, eerie glow of the cave.
Jaegel’s mouth parted slightly, his thoughts in turmoil.
"W-When did he get behind me?!"
His brain raced, trying to comprehend what had just happened.
He hadn’t even seen Liam move.
Not even a blur, not even a shadow—nothing.
And worst of all—
He hadn’t sensed a single thing.
Not even now, when Liam was standing right in front of him.
It was like—
He was there, and at the same time, he wasn’t.
’What just happened?’ Jaegel thoufht, gnashing his teeth in frustration.
He couldn’t understand it.
The darkness around weren’t just there for show, they were also meant to confuse his senses.
Liam shouldn’t be able to pinpoint his actual position, talk less of charging at him.
So how?
How had Liam moved that fast? How had he seen through his deception so easily?
Different thought kept flashing across his mind, and his legs remained rooted to the spot.
His single eye darted around in confusion, but he knew—this wasn’t the time to hesitate.
Thinking wouldn’t save him.
He had to attack.
Without wasting another second, Jaegel lunged forward.
His movements were sharp, filled with desperation as he summoned a small, dark orb in his palm.
Dark energy crackled around it, twisting violently as he poured his remaining strength into the attack.
It didn’t matter how fast Liam was.
If he landed just one hit—
He could turn the tide.
But—
Squelch.
A sharp, searing pain erupted in his arm.
Jaegel’s body stiffened.
His breath hitched.
His fingers, he suddenly lost feeling in them.
His large eye trembled as he slowly turned his gaze to the side.
And then—
His mind blanked.
His arm... was gone.
Severed cleanly at the elbow.
Blood gushed from the fresh wound, splattering onto the floor in thick, violent spurts.
And there—lying in a growing pool of red—was his severed limb.
His own fingers still twitched slightly, as if refusing to accept their fate.
Jaegel’s lips parted, a shaky breath escaping his mouth.
’What... what just happened?’ He thought, all colour rapidly draining from his face.
The pain rushed in all at once, a searing, unbearable agony coursing through his body.
"ARRGHHH!!"
His scream tore through the cave, raw and filled with sheer agony.
His body collapsed to the ground, his remaining hand clutching the bloody stump as he writhed in pain.
He gasped, his chest heaving.
’He’s... too fast!’ He thought, gnashing his teeth in agony.
He hadn’t even seen it.
Hadn’t even sensed the attack.
It was as if his arm had simply... ceased to exist.
Above him, Liam stood.
He didn’t say anything despite the obvious pain he was in, not even caring in the slightest.
His crimson eyes gleamed coldly as he gazed down at Jaegel, completely indifferent to his suffering.
The cave’s eerie glow reflected off the blade in his hand—the same blade that had effortlessly severed Jaegel’s limb.
Liam tilted his head slightly.
"You should have just answered." He said. "Then maybe you would have kept your life."
Jaegel’s body shuddered at those words.
His eye darted up, looking at Liam in pure horror.
And then—
The pressure came.
A suffocating, overwhelming weight crashed down on him.
Like an invisible force pressing into his very bones, threatening to crush him into the ground.
Jaegel’s breathing grew erratic. His limbs trembled violently as he struggled to endure the pressure.
His heart pounded in his chest, a suffocating fear gripping his entire being.
His thoughts were a jumbled mess.
This wasn’t normal, there was ’nothing’ human about the pressure crashing down on him.
This—this thing standing before him—was not something he could fight.
His eye flickered down.
Liam’s blade was raised.
The gleaming tip hovered in the air—just above him.
Waiting to descend.
Jaegel’s body locked up, cold sweat dripping down his back.
He knew.
If that sword came down, all that awaited him was death.
There were no tricks, no second chances, just the realisation that the end of his life was near
His breath came in short, shallow gasps.
His pride screamed at him to fight, to resist.
But his survival instincts spoke louder.
And so—
He bowed.
His forehead pressed against the cold, bloodstained floor.
His trembling body curled inward, his remaining hand clutching at Liam’s feet.
"P-Please... Please spare me."
His voice was weak, pitiful even.
However, he didn’t care anymore.
All he wanted to do was live, even if it meant grovelling at the feet of his enemy.
Even if it meant throwing away all his pride.
He would do anything to survive.
Liam gazed down at the trembling heretic, his crimson eyes cold and unyielding. His blade remained poised, its edge glistening under the dim glow of the cave.
The scent of blood lingered in the air, but Liam paid it no mind. His focus was entirely on the man groveling at his feet.
"If you truly value your life," Liam spoke, his voice calm yet laced with an anger, "then answer my question."
Jaegel flinched, his breathing erratic.
He dared not lift his gaze, his remaining hand pressing against the ground as though he could somehow disappear into it.
The air around him grew heavier, suffocating, as the pressure radiating from Liam intensified.
The heretic’s body tensed as a violent shiver ran down his spine. His lips parted, but no words came at first. He felt like even the slightest hesitation could cost him his life. Finally, through ragged breaths, he forced himself to speak.
"I—I took them... somewhere else," he confessed, his voice barely above a whisper.
Liam’s eyes darkened. "Where?"
The demand was sharp, immediate, and absolute. There was no room for deceit, no space for hesitation.
The heretic clenched his jaw, his teeth grinding against each other. His body trembled even more violently, and for a brief moment, his fingers dug into the dirt beneath him. His reaction did not go unnoticed.
Liam’s eyes narrowed. A sudden realization struck him like a bolt of lightning.
Something was wrong.
The way the heretic reacted, the way his body tensed instead of simply answering—it could only mean one thing.
The girls were in danger.
His grip on his sword tightened, and his face twisted into a frown.
He might be too late.
