Chapter 102: Jaegel’s fury

Chapter 102: Jaegel’s fury

Liam clicked his tongue in irritation.

Jaegel was ugly—not just physically, but in every possible way.

His disgusting appearance was one thing, but his personality made it worse. He was the type of person whose very existence repulsed him.

Liam had met another heretic before—Evangeline.

But unlike Jaegel, Eva was still beautiful. Her appearance and even the way she carried herself made it easy to forget she was one of them.

But Jaegel?

Everything about him was rotten. From the way he looked to the way he acted.

Still—

Liam knew that now wasn’t the time to think about such meaningless things.

There were more pressing matters at hand.

He had already lost sight of Emma, Lela, and Cynthia the moment he stepped into the dark cave.

And the only one who had the answers was standing right in front of him.

So, without missing a beat—

He spoke again.

"Where did you take them?"

His voice was calm, but there was a dangerous edge to it.

Jaegel simply chuckled, his thin, bony fingers trailing across his face as if caressing himself. His long tongue flicked out slightly, wetting his cracked lips.

"They’re somewhere..." he whispered, his voice thick with amusement.

Then, his wide, twitching eye locked onto Liam.

"...where you’ll never be able to get to."

Liam’s grip on his blades tightened.

Jaegel continued, his smug grin widening.

"You’ll never be able to save them," he cooed. "You will only be able to watch them die."

His words were slow, deliberate—meant to provoke him.

But Liam’s expression didn’t waver.

His golden eyes simply narrowed as he observed Jaegel, his mind already processing possible scenarios.

He had no idea where Emma and the others were.

But he knew one thing—

This freak wasn’t the type to kill them immediately.

He was the type to play with his food first.

And that meant...

There was still time.

Liam’s eyes remained locked on the heretic, his stance unchanging.

Jaegel suddenly let out another sharp chuckle, his fingers tapping against his own cheekbone.

"Funny, though..." he mused.

"You asked about those girls, but you didn’t even bother to ask about Rex."

Liam’s expression didn’t change.

He simply stood there, unmoving.

Jaegel grinned.

"Oh?" His large eye gleamed with excitement. "So you really don’t care, do you?"

Liam still didn’t say anything.

He didn’t need to.

Because Jaegel was right.

He didn’t care about Rex.

Not one bit.

To Liam, Rex was just a random variable in all of this.

Whether he was alive or dead didn’t matter to him.

It wouldn’t change anything.

"Hehehe." Jaegel chuckled, his large eye gleaming with amusement as he observed Liam’s indifferent expression.

He had always assumed that members of the church were different.

That they were the type to always care for their comrades—to go out of their way to save them, no matter what.

But this man standing before him...

Was nothing like that.

Jaegel tilted his head slightly, his thin, bony fingers tapping against his cheek as he continued to study Liam’s reaction.

Nothing.

No anger. No frustration.

Not even the slightest sign of guilt.

It was as if Rex was less than an afterthought to him.

"...Interesting," Jaegel muttered under his breath.

This young man truly had no concern for his so-called ’teammate.’

He still had no intention of letting Rex go scot-free, but...

He liked that mindset.

It was a belief that resonated with him in a way he hadn’t expected.

A world where one only cared for themselves.

Where connections and companions were nothing more than disposable tools.

A pure and unforgiving philosophy.

Jaegel grinned.

But that amusement quickly faded.

Because despite Liam’s indifference towards Rex...

He still seemed to care about the other three girls; Emma, Cynthia, and Lela.

His sharp gaze and firm stance when asking about them made that clear.

Jaegel’s smirk twitched slightly.

’How... disappointing.’ He thought, his face twisting into a slight frown. ’Kinds of remind me... of myself back then.’

"You know..." he finally said, his tone laced with amusement as he looked back at Liam.

His large eye flashed strangely.

"...That’s not good, you know."

Liam remained silent, simply watching him.

Jaegel feigned a pitiful expression, placing a bony hand over his heart.

"I thought the church was all about love and equality..." He sighed dramatically. "Aren’t you supposed to cherish all your teammates equally?"

Liam didn’t respond.

His eyes remained locked onto Jaegel, cold and unreadable.

But that only seemed to encourage the heretic further.

Jaegel let out a mock sigh, shaking his head as if he were truly disappointed.

"Poor, poor Rex," He lamented, his voice dripping with mock sympathy.

He stepped forward, his thin fingers twitching slightly.

"I imagine he must feel so abandoned right now... Left behind by his so-called teammates... Forgotten... Cast aside like trash..."

His voice lowered, becoming almost hypnotic.

"How utterly... cruel."

Jaegel slowly licked his lips, his long tongue trailing across his face.

"To ignore someone who fought alongside you... Someone who was supposed to be your ally..."

He let out another mock sigh, placing his hands together as if in prayer.

"What a truly vile thing to do."

"Hahaha!"

Then, without warning—

Jaegel let out a maniacal laugh.

The sound echoed through the darkness, reverberating off the unseen walls of the cave.

It was a twisted and gleeful sound, filled with nothing but amusement at his own words.

Liam, however—

Remained unfazed.

His expression was still as calm and detached as before.

He simply watched Jaegel as if he were nothing more than a child throwing a tantrum.

And that—

Annoyed Jaegel more than he cared to admit.

"I don’t care about what the church thinks, or what twisted fucks such as you think."

"This is the last time I’ll ask this, if you don’t answer... you’ll lose your life." He said, his eyes flashing with a cold glint.

Jaegel immediately felt a shiver run down his spine.

His large eye widened slightly, and before he could even think, his body reacted on its own, and he jumped backwards.

’What... was that?’ He thought, gnashing his teeth.

Sweat trickled down his pale, sickly skin, and for the first time in a long time, he felt something unfamiliar.

Yet at the same time, strangely familiar.

His hands trembled. His breath came in short, ragged gasps.

The air around him felt heavy—as if an invisible force was pressing down on him.

He tried to speak, but his throat tightened, and all he could do was breathe silently.

The suffocating feeling only lasted for a few seconds, and then, it vanished.

Like a fleeting illusion.

Jaegel staggered back, gasping for breath as he clutched his chest.

His fingers dug into his robe, his heart pounding against his ribs.

’What... did he do to me?’ He thought, his eyes widened in horror.

’How could someone without a blessing... possess such terrifying pressure, it’s impossible!’ His eye slowly lifted, staring at Liam with a different light.

For the first time—

He felt uncertainty.

This boy, this so-called weakling, had almost brought him to his knees without even lifting a finger.

Had momentarily brought him to his knees without even lifting a finger.

The realization burned.

It boiled within him.

And when Jaegel thought back to how pathetic he must have looked, rage flared within his chest.

His lips twisted into a snarl, and he gnashed his teeth, his long tongue flicking out in frustration.

Liam simply stood there, watching him with a nonchalant expression.

It was almost like he wasn’t even looking at a person, but empty air instead.

Jaegel’s blood boiled.

How dare he?

"You’re a hundred years too early to threaten me..." He muttered, his voice low and seething with anger.

Then, his eye snapped open, and with a bellowing roar—

"Know your place, bastard!"

His hand shot forward, fingers stretching unnaturally as if reaching for Liam’s very soul.

Then—

The ground trembled.

Liam’s eyes narrowed, his instincts screaming at him.

Without hesitation, he leapt back, his body moving on sheer reflex.

And in that very instant—

Swoosh!

A massive, dark scythe burst from the ground.

It sliced through the air where he had just stood, its jagged edge gleaming with a sinister, shadowy glow.

Liam’s feet landed smoothly on the cave floor, his gaze cold as he eyed the massive weapon.

’That was close.’ He thought, narrowing his eyes.

If not for his sharp senses, that attack might have impaled him.

Jaegel let out a sick grin, his eye twitching in amusement.

"Oh? You dodged? How disappointing... I was expecting to give you a swift death, but we can also do this the hard way!"

He snapped his fingers, and instantly—

The scythe twisted.

The blade turned unnaturally, lunging toward Liam like a serpent.

Liam’s expression remained calm, but his body reacted in an instant.

He sidestepped, feeling the rush of air as the scythe narrowly missed him.

But the attack wasn’t over.

The ground cracked open, and several more scythes erupted from the darkness, each one slashing toward him from multiple angles.

Liam’s grip tightened on his dual blades.

His red eyes flashed, and a large smirk appeared on his face.

’Activate Dash!’

’Activate Strength Boost!’
