Chapter 66: If you will have me

"Son." His father’s voice was warm, acknowledging his presence with a small tilt of his head downward.

"Damon." His mother’s voice tingled with happiness as she walked over to him, her eyes taking in his appearance and once she was certain he was in perfect health, she embraced him in a brief hug.

"Your hair is a little bit longer but, it looks....good." Davon, his younger brother remarked as he hugged him as well, his similar blue eyes holding a sharpness that was quite rare for boys his age.

"Well, thank you." Damon smiled as he gently ruffled his brother’s hair.

His sisters were seated in a sofa, each reading a book.

The book covers looked similar and judging from the way they were deeply engrossed, Damon guessed whatever they were reading was quite interesting.

"What are you two reading?" Damon asked as he walked towards them.

"The same book. It’s about a warrior princess." Davina replied, briefly tearing her eyes from her book to look at her brother.

"It is very interesting and some topics are highly controversial." Daphne grinned and that seemed to get her mother’s attention.

"Can I have a look at that book, dear?" The queen asked and Daphne pouted.

"But mama, it’s nothing seriously forbidden." She replied but the stern look from her mother made her give up the book.

The queen read the blurb, shaking her head in disbelief as she sighed softly and returned her daughter’s book.

She had birthed two very strong willed daughters and she couldn’t even complain. She had been exactly like them when she was their age.

Curious, rebellious and strong willed, she had been quite the fright.

"So, these are the books that are filling your heads with ideas on how to avoid marriage for as long as you possibly can." The queen mused as she looked at her husband who shrugged, his smile clearly saying.

’It is your turn to deal with our daughters, darling.’

Damon watched the interaction unfold as he stepped back, standing next to Alexander who was clearly being entertained.

"You have an interesting family." Alexander smiled as he glanced at Damon who sneakily reached out and held his hand.

"One that you are about to join." Damon returned his smile, his eyes warm as they gazed at Alexander whose cheeks were slightly flushed.

They stood in silence for a while until Damon loudly cleared his throat to get his family’s attention.

"I have something to tell you all." Damon spoke once everyone had their eyes on him.

"I know this may sound strange and surprising but I am in love with.... a man. This man." Damon concluded as he raised Alexander’s hand to his lips and placed a kiss on his knuckles.

His family was silent for an entire minute, the twins’ eyes wide from surprise.

"I will admit this is the first time I have seen my sisters utterly speechless." Davon innocently broke the silence and the queen chuckled, recovering from her shocked state.

"I will confess I hadn’t seen this one coming." Davina found her voice as she looked at Alexander, getting the slightest idea on why her brother had fallen for the man.

He was pleasant to look at.

"Same." Daphne agreed with her sister as they all looked at their father who had not yet made a sound since Damon’s statement.

"I love you Damon but I think I need a moment to... ahhh...wrap my head around all this. If you will excuse me." The King’s voice was calm as he stood up and walked out of the room.

"He took it better than I expected." The queen smiled to encourage Damon who looked a little bit sad after his father had walked out.

Damon appreciated her effort with a faint smile as Alexander’s hand tightened around his in a soothing motion.

"Alexander, this is my family. Everyone, this is Alexander, the man I love." Damon made a formal introduction.

"This is all quite surprising but if you two really love each other, then I have no objections." The queen admitted and Damon hugged her, his eyes tearing up a little.

"Thank you." He whispered as he placed a small peck on her cheek and pulled away.

"Hi Alexander, I am Davina and this is my twin sister, Daphne. We are pleased to formally make your acquaintance." The twins were friendly and welcoming and Damon was touched that his family was dealing with his relationship well enough.

Later that evening, Damon and Alexander lay on a blanket that was spread out on small terrace in Damon’s quarters, stargazing and holding hands.

"I am glad that your father came around." Alexander smiled as he glanced at Damon, recalling the effort his boyfriend’s father had put into getting to know him during dinner.

The king had asked the general questions about his likes and dislikes and inquired about his family. The man had tried to make him feel more comfortable and Alexander was touched.

"Me too." Damon agreed as he rolled over, his face hovering above Alexander’s.

"Alex, I got you something." Damon said as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a black velvet box.

Alexander’s heart warmed up and his eyes watered once he saw the two identical golden rings in the box.

"I got you a ring and it has both our initials. Do you like it?" Damon asked as he picked up the slightly bigger ring that had letters D and A engraved on the inside, showing it to Alexander.

"I love it." Alexander admitted as he pulled him down for a kiss, his heart racing with joy when Damon slipped the ring onto his finger.

"Does this mean you are going to marry me, your highness?" Alexander teased, flipping Damon over so that he was now on top.

"Yes, if you will have me." Damon agreed as Alexander placed the ring on his finger.

"We are going to get married and you are going to be mine officially." Alexander murmured, his lips stretching into a smile as he kissed a slow trail of butterfly kisses down Damon’s cheek.
